Misty Step Line of Sight Explained: Distance, Walls, and Clear Paths

Yes—Misty Step requires you to see the destination. The destination must be an unoccupied space within 30 feet that you can see. It does not require a clear physical path between you and that space. In a March 1, 2016 clarification, D&D rules designer Jeremy Crawford summarized the distinction: With misty step, you must be able to see your destination, but you don’t need a clear path there.

What Misty Step actually requires

The spell’s destination condition has three parts:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Condition What it means at the table
Up to 30 feet The destination must be no more than 30 feet from the caster.
Unoccupied space You cannot choose a space occupied by a creature or other object that makes the space unavailable.
You can see it The caster must have sight of the specific destination space when choosing it.

The 2014 Wizards of the Coast SRD says Misty Step teleports you “up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space that you can see.” The official 2024 SRD uses the same essential wording: “Briefly surrounded by silvery mist, you teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space you can see.” “Line of sight” is a useful shorthand for this visible-destination requirement, but the wording is more precise than a general rule about drawing a straight line through the map.

Line of sight is not the same as a clear path

These are two different questions:

  • Can the caster see the destination? Misty Step requires yes.
  • Can the caster travel through every point between the caster and destination? Misty Step does not require that, according to Crawford’s clarification.

Teleportation skips the intervening space. A wall, railing, chasm, locked door, or other obstacle can prevent you from reaching a location normally without preventing Misty Step to a destination you can see. The obstacle still matters if it blocks your view. The spell does not let you select a destination hidden on the other side of a solid wall merely because the distance is 30 feet or less.

With misty step, you must be able to see your destination, but you don’t need a clear path there.
—Jeremy Crawford, March 1, 2016 archived rules clarification

Can you Misty Step through a wall?

Sometimes, but only when the destination is visible. The phrase “through a wall” describes the route, while the spell checks the destination.

Wall with no opening

If the wall completely blocks your view of the chosen space, you cannot target that space with Misty Step. Being within 30 feet is not enough; the destination also has to be seen.

Opening, doorway, or window

If an opening lets you see an unoccupied space on the other side and that space is within 30 feet, the lack of a walkable route does not by itself disqualify the teleport. Crawford’s clarification says a clear path is unnecessary.

Destination visible despite an obstruction

If the game’s rules let you see the destination around, over, under, or through an obstruction, the obstruction does not automatically add a path requirement. The destination must still be unoccupied and within range.

Magical or special barriers

Do not turn the clarification into a blanket statement that every barrier is irrelevant. A separate spell, feature, magical effect, or adventure rule can impose its own restriction. Apply that rule in addition to Misty Step’s normal visible-destination requirement.

What counts as seeing the destination?

Crawford also clarified that spells don’t care how your vision works. The sight required by a spell can be by any means. The practical test is whether the caster’s rules actually provide sight of the chosen space at the moment of casting.

  • A normal view through an open doorway can satisfy the requirement.
  • A vision-granting spell, feature, or other effect can satisfy it if that effect’s own rules allow the caster to see the destination.
  • If an effect lets you perceive a location but does not give you sight under its wording, the table must follow that effect’s specific text rather than assume it qualifies.
  • Conditions that remove or limit sight can prevent Misty Step to a destination the caster cannot see.

The “any means” clarification does not erase the rules of the vision-granting effect. It means Misty Step does not demand one particular kind of eyesight; it demands that the destination be visible under the applicable rules.

2014 and 2024 rules wording

The core answer is the same in both SRD versions.

Rules version Destination wording Other listed spell details
2014 SRD Teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space that you can see. The supplied 2014 text establishes the destination condition.
2024 SRD Briefly surrounded by silvery mist, teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space you can see. Level 2 conjuration; sorcerer, warlock, and wizard spell; bonus-action casting time; range self; verbal component; instantaneous duration.

Neither wording changes the key distinction: visibility is required, while a clear route is not stated as a requirement. The 2024 entry identifies Misty Step as a level 2 conjuration available to sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards, with a bonus-action casting time, verbal component, range self, and instantaneous duration.

A reliable way to adjudicate a Misty Step

Use this sequence whenever a player proposes a destination:

  1. Measure the distance. Confirm that the chosen space is no more than 30 feet from the caster.
  2. Identify one specific space. Misty Step targets a destination space, not merely a general area or an unseen point behind an obstacle.
  3. Check occupancy. Confirm that the space is unoccupied under the table’s normal space rules.
  4. Check sight. Ask whether the caster can see that exact space using ordinary vision or a valid vision-granting effect.
  5. Ignore the route unless another rule says otherwise. Do not reject the spell solely because the caster cannot walk, fly, or draw an unobstructed physical route to the destination.
  6. Apply special restrictions. If another spell, feature, barrier, or adventure effect specifically limits teleportation or vision, apply that restriction separately.

This order prevents the common mistake of treating “line of sight” as a requirement to trace an unobstructed corridor from the caster to the destination.

Common situations and rulings

Across a gap or chasm

If the opposite landing space is visible, within 30 feet, and unoccupied, the gap does not create a clear-path requirement. Misty Step can cross the gap even when ordinary movement cannot.

Behind a closed door

If the door prevents the caster from seeing the destination, the destination fails the spell’s sight condition. If an opening or applicable vision effect reveals the exact space, the door does not independently require a walkable route.

Onto a ledge above or below the caster

Vertical distance counts toward the 30-foot limit. If the ledge is visible and the total distance is within 30 feet, the spell’s destination conditions can be met; the caster does not need stairs or a climbable surface.

Into a crowded area

The chosen destination must be unoccupied. Seeing a floor area is not enough if a creature or other rule-defined obstruction occupies that space.

Using a special sense or vision effect

The archived clarification permits sight by any means, but the specific sense or effect still controls what it reveals. Confirm that the destination is actually visible under that effect and check whether the effect has range, direction, or barrier limits.

Frequent mistakes to avoid

  • “Teleportation ignores line of sight.” Incorrect. Misty Step still requires a destination you can see.
  • “A wall always blocks Misty Step.” Too broad. A wall blocks the spell when it blocks sight of the destination; the spell does not separately require a clear route.
  • “If I can see the room, I can appear anywhere in it.” The caster must see the specific unoccupied space chosen, and it must be within 30 feet.
  • “Any perception effect automatically works.” Crawford’s statement allows sight by any means, but the effect providing that perception has its own rules.
  • “The 2024 version changed the answer.” The 2014 and 2024 SRD destination wording preserves the same visible-space requirement.

How to explain the ruling quickly at the table

A concise ruling is: “Choose an unoccupied space you can see within 30 feet. You do not need a clear path to it, unless another rule specifically prevents the teleport.” That sentence captures the spell text, the 30-foot limit, the occupancy condition, and Crawford’s sight-versus-route distinction without treating every barrier as automatically irrelevant.

Bottom line for players and Dungeon Masters

Misty Step needs line of sight in the practical sense that the caster must see the destination. It does not need a clear path between the caster and that destination. A visible space beyond a gap, obstacle, or otherwise impassable route can be a legal destination if it is within 30 feet and unoccupied. A hidden space behind a sight-blocking wall cannot be chosen, and a separate magical or rules-based restriction can impose additional limits.
