For most 4K TVs, leave the PS5’s Resolution and Video Transfer Rate on Automatic and Auto, respectively. Set HDR to On When Supported, and enable VRR or 120 Hz Output only when your TV and the game support them. Change other output controls when you have a specific compatibility or picture problem, not as routine quality upgrades.
Check what the PS5 and TV are actually outputting
Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Start with Current Video Output Signal and the connected HDMI device information to see the active resolution and the TV’s reported VRR and HDR capabilities.
Sony says the PS5 detects the TV’s capabilities and automatically selects the best available resolution. Leave Resolution on Automatic for ordinary use. If you have a reason to choose a fixed mode, select 2160p for 4K output, provided the TV supports it. A 4K signal requires both a PS5 and a compatible 4K screen. PlayStation Support’s resolution guide explains how to check and change the output.
Choose HDR behavior for your games and apps
Set HDR to On When Supported if you want HDR output for compatible games and apps while non-HDR content remains in SDR. Always On converts even non-HDR-compatible content to HDR output, so it is not the neutral choice if you want SDR content to stay SDR.

Adjust HDR for your particular TV
Use Adjust HDR and follow the on-screen prompts to tune brightness and HDR rendering for your display. There is no universal set of calibration values; the right result depends on the TV and the instructions shown during setup.
Enable VRR and 120 Hz only when supported
Turn on VRR when both the connected TV and the game support it. Results can vary by TV. The optional Apply to Unsupported Games setting may help stabilize frame rate in games without VRR support, but switch it off if you notice unexpected behavior.

Enable 120 Hz Output if your TV and the game support 120 Hz. If enabling it causes video output problems while playing those games, turn it off. For a compatible 1440p TV, the PS5’s 1440p output test checks combinations of SDR and HDR, 60 and 120 Hz, and VRR.
Understand ALLM and its interaction with VRR
On a compatible TV, ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) can switch the display to a low-latency mode while you play. Do not assume HDMI 2.1 branding alone means a television supports ALLM; check its manual.

VRR can still activate low-latency behavior even when the PS5’s ALLM control is off. To fully turn off ALLM behavior, Sony says to turn off both ALLM and VRR. The PS5 does not send an ALLM signal while a media app is running.
Leave signal-format controls alone unless troubleshooting
Video Transfer Rate
Keep Video Transfer Rate on Auto unless you are troubleshooting signal flickering. Sony suggests trying -1 or -2 to limit 4K output. These are stability trade-offs, not image-enhancement settings: both limit 4K 120 Hz. At 4K 50/60 Hz, -1 limits RGB/YUV444 Deep Color, while -2 limits RGB/YUV444 and results in YUV420 output.

RGB Range and Deep Color Output
Change RGB Range only if an HDMI device is not communicating RGB range information correctly. Sony describes Deep Color Output as enabling smooth image rendering but does not prescribe further tuning; there is no routine reason to change it for a 4K TV.
Screen edges and borders
If the picture is cropped at the edges or appears with a black border, open Settings > Screen and Video > Screen > Adjust Display Area and follow the prompts.

Troubleshoot missing 4K/120 Hz output
If the screen goes blank when you expect 4K/120 Hz, or the PS5 outputs 1080p/120 Hz instead, work through the signal path. The TV’s specifications, firmware, HDMI port and settings, any equipment between the console and TV, and the cable can all affect the result.
- Confirm that the TV supports 4K at 120 Hz. Consult its manual for which HDMI port supports the mode and whether a TV-side setting must be enabled.
- Update the TV firmware, then check its HDMI settings and connect the PS5 to a suitable HDMI 2.1 port.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the TV while diagnosing if an AV receiver or other intermediary may be affecting the signal.
- Use the included PS5 HDMI cable or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz if the cable is missing or could be the issue. A cable cannot add support for a limited TV port or fix a TV configuration or firmware problem.
- Set PS5 Resolution to Automatic or 2160p, and leave Video Transfer Rate on Auto while diagnosing.
