MLB The Show 23 launched on Xbox Game Pass on March 28, 2023—the game’s standard release date. That announcement is now historical: Xbox Store listings checked on August 18, 2026 show the game for purchase and say a purchase is required for cloud play, so cloud-play availability should not be confused with Game Pass catalog access.
What Xbox announced in 2023
Xbox announced MLB The Show 23 as a day-one Game Pass release. Its March 21, 2023 Game Pass lineup announcement listed the game for March 28, with availability marked “Cloud and Console.” The game’s standard launch date was also March 28, as Xbox had confirmed in its January release announcement.

At launch, subscribers could access the base game through the applicable Game Pass offering rather than buying a standard copy separately. The official lineup announcement named Cloud and Console, not PC; it does not establish a PC Game Pass release.
How early access worked
Game Pass subscribers who wanted to start playing before launch could buy the MLB The Show 23 Xbox Game Pass Early Access Bundle. It unlocked play on March 24, four days before the standard release, and included bonus items. The bundle was an add-on, not a copy of the game: Xbox warned that buying it without Game Pass would not provide access to the base game.

| Xbox option | What the launch-era information established |
|---|---|
| Xbox One | Supported at launch; the Xbox One edition was also included with the Series X|S bundle under the original store structure. |
| Xbox Series X|S | Supported at launch, with current-generation features including Stadium Creator. |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Listed in Xbox Store play locations; cloud play is distinct from inclusion in the Game Pass game catalog. |
| PC Game Pass | Not listed in Xbox’s March 21, 2023 Game Pass announcement, which specified Cloud and Console. |
The Series X|S edition was optimized for current-generation consoles. Xbox identified Stadium Creator as available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, not Xbox One. Under the original store structure, an Xbox One buyer could upgrade to the Series X|S version for an additional cost; check the current listing for present purchase terms.
What the game added at launch
Among the launch-era features Xbox highlighted were World Baseball Classic content; Storylines focused on the Negro Leagues; Captain Cards in Diamond Dynasty; and changes to Franchise Mode and the MLB Draft. Xbox also said the game had more than 25 new legends, bringing the stated total to more than 180.

The game supported cross-platform play, cross saves, and cross progression, though some features were limited to newer console generations. Xbox described targeted 60-frame-per-second gameplay and 4K presentation on supported hardware. These are launch-era details, not claims about new additions in 2026.
What about Game Pass now?
As of the Xbox Store checks on August 18, 2026, the Xbox One and Series X|S listings still offered the game for purchase. They also described it as cloud playable through Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate, while explicitly stating “Game purchase required.” That wording points to cloud play for people who own the game; it does not establish that the title is currently included as a no-cost catalog download. Availability can vary by account, region, and catalog changes.

The listings also say online console multiplayer requires an eligible Game Pass plan sold separately. That multiplayer entitlement is separate from owning or accessing the game. Check the live catalog and the listing for your account and region before subscribing or buying: the Xbox One listing and Xbox Series X|S listing may reflect different editions and terms.
