MLB.TV vs. Cable and Live TV Streaming: How to Watch Out-of-Market Baseball in 2026

MLB.TV is the direct 2026 option for many out-of-market fans, but territory blackouts and national exclusives matter. Compare it with local streaming and TV plans.

For watching a team outside your home television territory, MLB.TV is the most direct option identified for the 2026 season. It offers out-of-market regular-season games live or on demand, but local blackouts still apply, and nationally exclusive games may require another service. If your team is in-market, MLB.TV’s out-of-market package does not provide its live regular-season games; check the club’s local streaming offer or a TV provider carrying the relevant channel.

First check whether your team is out of market

“Out of market” is about your designated home television territory, not whether a particular game is being played at home or away. A road game can still be blacked out for you if the team is in your territory. MLB.TV is intended for out-of-market viewing and remains subject to blackout restrictions.

Before choosing a subscription, use MLB’s official blackout restrictions tool with your ZIP code and team. T-Mobile’s 2026 FAQ says MLB.TV identifies market chiefly through device geolocation and IP address; its explanation also makes clear that the out-of-market product does not provide live games for an in-market team. A live-TV plan or cable package is useful only if it carries the channel showing the game in your market.

What each viewing option actually covers

Option Best fit Limits and checks
MLB.TV out-of-market subscription Following a team outside your designated home television territory, with games on supported devices. Local blackouts still apply; nationally exclusive games may be on partner services. It does not provide live regular-season games for an in-market team.
MLB.TV through ESPN An MLB.TV subscriber who prefers the ESPN App, or an eligible existing ESPN Unlimited subscriber considering MLB’s listed annual price. MLB.TV and ESPN Unlimited are separate subscriptions. ESPN Unlimited is not required to buy MLB.TV. Confirm current checkout pricing and the entitlements in your specific plan.
Cable, satellite or telecom TV package, including MLB Extra Innings A viewer who wants traditional TV delivery, local channels, or a provider’s baseball package. Channel availability varies by provider and market. MLB directs customers to their provider for Extra Innings pricing; check its lineup and total bill against the games you want.
Live-TV streaming plan A viewer who wants a broader live-channel bundle and whose exact plan carries the relevant local or national channel. Do not assume every tier or market carries the needed regional sports network, local station or ESPN product. Blackouts and national exclusivity still matter.
Team’s local streaming subscription Watching an in-market team where the club offers a local direct-to-consumer service. Club availability and prices differ. Check your ZIP code and the club’s current offer.

MLB’s 2026 guide says 22 clubs had an in-market streaming option as of March 10. For 14 MLB-produced clubs, it also described local availability through cable, satellite and telecom providers. Those figures describe the guide’s 2026 offers, not a guarantee that a particular channel is available in every market.

2026 MLB.TV pricing and ESPN access

MLB’s 2026 guide lists MLB.TV at $149.99 per season for a new customer without an existing ESPN Unlimited subscription, or $134.99 per season for an existing ESPN Unlimited subscriber. The Associated Press reported a monthly option at $29.99 on February 10, 2026; check the current checkout screen because offers can change.

You can subscribe to MLB.TV without ESPN Unlimited. MLB says subscribers can watch through the MLB App or ESPN App. The services remain distinct: having MLB.TV does not itself mean you have ESPN Unlimited, and eligibility for a bundled ESPN entitlement depends on the exact TV plan.

At the time of AP’s February 10, 2026 report, Spectrum, DirecTV, Fubo TV, Hulu Live TV and Verizon Fios subscribers were listed as having ESPN Unlimited access through their plan. That does not establish that every tier or customer qualifies; verify the entitlement for your market and package before counting it as included.

Local streaming prices are not uniform

MLB’s March 10, 2026 guide listed non-RSN local streaming offers at $99.99 per season or $19.99 per month. It also listed a local-streaming-plus-MLB.TV bundle at $199.99 per season or $39.99 per month. These are listed offer prices, not universal rates: MLB said prices for six clubs distributed through regional sports network partners varied by market. Check the specific team’s offer and availability for your ZIP code.

Nationally exclusive games may need another service

Neither an out-of-market package nor a large general TV bundle necessarily carries every game you want. MLB says select regular-season and postseason games exclusive to national partners are shown on those partners’ services rather than MLB.TV or Club.TV. AP reported that ESPN’s new three-year agreement included 30 exclusive games, characterized primarily as weeknight games in summer; that deal-level count does not mean every game in a given season is exclusive or identify the full schedule.

For a specific game, check the current schedule and broadcast listing rather than assuming that a service’s overall baseball offering includes it. The right comparison is the set of games you follow—your team’s local broadcasts, out-of-market games, and any national exclusives—not simply the number of channels advertised by a package.

How to choose for your team and budget

  1. Enter your ZIP code and team in MLB’s blackout restrictions tool. Establish whether the team is in-market before comparing subscriptions.
  2. If the team is out of market, compare MLB.TV routes. Check the current annual or monthly checkout price, whether you already have an eligible ESPN Unlimited entitlement, and whether you want to use the MLB App or ESPN App.
  3. If the team is in-market, check the club’s local streaming offer and your TV lineup. Compare the local direct-to-consumer price with cable, satellite, telecom or live-TV streaming access to the required channel.
  4. Check the games that may be nationally exclusive. Look up the current broadcast listing for games you care about and confirm whether they require a partner service.
  5. Compare the full cost and practical fit. Include any existing TV subscription, the channels and games it actually provides, supported devices, and whether radio, MLB Network or Minor League games matter to you.

MLB’s ESPN support page describes supported device categories but does not establish compatibility for every television model. Check device support for the app you plan to use. A streaming device can enable app access, but it cannot remove a territory blackout or national exclusivity restriction.

What to know about cable and MLB Extra Innings

MLB says MLB Extra Innings continues as a provider package, but its 2026 guide does not give a price; ask your cable or satellite provider for a current quote. A provider’s package is not proof that it carries every local or national game you want. Confirm the channel lineup for your address and compare the full provider bill with the relevant streaming subscriptions.

For fans in one of the 22 clubs with local streaming listed by MLB, a local subscription may be a more targeted way to watch an in-market team than a broad TV bundle. For other situations, cable or a live-TV plan may make sense if it carries the specific local channel you need and its total cost works for you. The sources do not support a single nationwide best-value answer without your team, ZIP code and existing plan.
