Before changing anything, note:
- Which installer or program displays the error
- Whether it appears during startup, a Windows update, or an audio-device installation
- The full error text and any path shown
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Which device was being installed, such as a headset, sound card, or USB audio device

It is the Media class co-installer, a component used by Windows device-installation infrastructure, particularly for multimedia and audio-class hardware. If Windows says that mmcico.dll is missing, the problem is usually damaged Windows system files, a failed media-driver installation, or security software quarantining the file.
Do not download a replacement from a random DLL website. The file must match your Windows build and architecture, and copying an unrelated version into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder can create more loader errors.
Fix mmcico.dll with Windows servicing first
Because mmcico.dll is a Windows component, repair Windows before trying to replace individual files.
1. Install pending Windows updates
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart Windows, even if Windows Update does not require it.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the updates and restart.
Try the affected installer or device again after restarting. If the same error appears, continue with DISM and System File Checker.

2. Run DISM, then SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component source. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies. Run them in this order.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish. This can take time and may appear to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer.
If SFC reports that it found corrupt files and repaired them, test the original program or device installer. If it reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run the same DISM and SFC sequence once more. Persistent repair failures indicate broader component-store damage rather than a simple missing DLL.
Manually repeating SFC and DISM can make it difficult to see what changed. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows detected issues; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the appropriate first repair for mmcico.dll.

Repair the audio or multimedia driver
A mmcico.dll message often appears while Windows is installing or configuring a media device. A co-installer is a user-mode DLL that performs additional work during device setup. It is not normally a game runtime or a Visual C++ component.
Microsoft setup logs have shown C:WindowsSystem32mmcico.dll being used as MediaClassCoInstaller during installation of a USB headset driver. That demonstrates a driver-installation context, but it does not mean that the same headset or manufacturer is responsible for every error.
Reinstall the affected device
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Also check Audio inputs and outputs and Universal Serial Bus controllers if the device is USB-connected.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers a checkbox to remove the driver package, select it only when you are sure you have a current driver available from the hardware manufacturer.
- Select Uninstall.
- Shut down or restart Windows.
- Reconnect the device after Windows starts.
- Let Windows install the driver, or install the current package supplied by the device manufacturer.
Use the manufacturer’s official support page for the exact device model. Avoid downloading mmcico.dll separately. The driver package should call the Windows co-installer through the normal device-installation process.

If Device Manager shows an error code, record it before uninstalling the device. If the reinstall works, the device should appear without a warning icon and its audio controls should function normally.

Microsoft documents the supported process in Update or reinstall drivers through Device Manager.
Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
A security product may remove or quarantine a system file after a detection. Do not disable antivirus just to force a DLL into Windows.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Look for an action involving
mmcico.dll. - Expand the entry and inspect the reported path.
- Restore the file only if all of these are true:
- The path is a normal Windows system directory
- The file is identified as Microsoft-signed
- The detection is clearly a false positive
- A current scan does not show broader malware activity
If the file is in an application, temporary, downloads, or other unusual directory, do not restore it automatically. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan and repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead.

On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit programs use the WOW64 compatibility layer. Depending on how a 32-bit process accesses the system directory, Windows may redirect it toward:

%SystemRoot%SysWOW64
These directory names are confusing: System32 contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains many 32-bit system files. Do not swap files between them manually.
To inspect the copy that Windows can see:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
%SystemRoot%System32. - Press Enter.
- Locate
mmcico.dll. - Right-click it and choose Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Inspect the signer and signature details.
A missing signature, an unusual location, or a file that Windows reports as invalid should be treated as a reason to scan and repair, not as a reason to download another copy. The exact file version depends on the Windows build and servicing state, so there is no universal “latest” replacement to copy manually.

A message saying “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that mmcico.dll itself is absent. The loader may be unable to find a dependency, or the driver package may be incomplete. Check the full path, the installer name, Device Manager, and any setup log before concluding that the named file is the only problem.
Do not register mmcico.dll with regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. mmcico.dll is documented as a device co-installer and exports MediaClassCoInstaller, not as a typical self-registering COM server.
Therefore, this is not a normal repair:
regsvr32 mmcico.dll
It may produce another error or give the impression that registration is required when the real problem is Windows servicing or driver setup. Repair the component with DISM and SFC, then reinstall the affected device driver.
If the problem started after an update
If mmcico.dll worked until a recent Windows update or upgrade, first install all current updates and restart. If the problem clearly began immediately after one update, you can review removal options:

- Open Start > Settings.
- On Windows 11, select Windows Update > Update history.
- On Windows 10, select Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history.
- Choose Uninstall updates.
- Select the relevant recent update.
- Follow the prompts and restart.
Do not remove updates merely because the error appeared after an unspecified period. Keep the update when possible, and use DISM, SFC, and driver reinstallation first. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ and update-removal instructions describe these paths.

System Restore can help when a driver, update, or system change immediately preceded the error.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally leaves personal files in place, but it can remove recently installed drivers, applications, and system changes. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guidance.
Repair-install Windows when system damage is broader
If DISM, SFC, updates, and driver reinstallation do not resolve the error, Windows may have deeper component-store damage.
On Windows 11, check for the repair reinstall option:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Look for Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now if available.
- Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when the supported option is available. See Microsoft’s Windows Update repair reinstall instructions.

If that option is unavailable or unsuccessful, use official Windows installation media for an in-place repair installation. Back up important files first and choose the option that preserves personal files and applications when presented.
Frequently asked questions
Is mmcico.dll malware?
The genuine Windows component is a Microsoft DLL used by media-device installation. A file with that name in an unusual folder is not automatically legitimate. Check its path, digital signature, and Defender results before trusting it.
Is mmcico.dll part of DirectX, .NET, or Visual C++?
No verified evidence connects it to those runtimes. mmcico.dll is a Windows media-class co-installer. A multimedia driver or Windows device installer may invoke it.
Should I download mmcico.dll separately?
No. There is no verified official Microsoft standalone download package for this file. Restore it through Windows servicing, Windows Update, or the component store. Reinstall the affected driver when the error is limited to a device setup.
Why does the error say “not found” when the file exists?
The message can refer to a missing dependency, an invalid file, an architecture mismatch, or an incomplete driver package. Inspect the full path and installer context rather than copying another DLL.
Does Windows Features contain a fix?
There is no general Windows Features checkbox that registers or repairs mmcico.dll. Enabling unrelated features will not replace a damaged media co-installer. Use DISM, SFC, Windows Update, or Device Manager.
What should I provide if the error remains?
Record the Windows version and build, complete error text, process or installer name, path shown in the message, affected device model, whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, and whether the issue began after an update, driver change, or security event. That information distinguishes a Windows-wide component problem from a single failed device package.
