mmfutil.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system file, and mmfutil.dll errors usually point to damaged or missing Windows components rather than a missing game runtime. The safest fix is to repair Windows with DISM and System File Checker instead of downloading an isolated DLL.
What is mmfutil.dll
The file is described as WMI Snapin Helpers and is associated with the Microsoft Windows Operating System. Its documented system location is:
C:WindowsSystem32wbemMMFUtil.dll
WMI, or Windows Management Instrumentation, is Microsoft’s Windows management and administration framework. It allows Windows tools, management consoles, scripts, services, and applications to query and work with system information. Microsoft explains the role of WMI in its about_WMI documentation.
The exact internal function of MMFUtil.dll is not publicly documented in detail. Its description and location identify it as a WMI-related Windows component, not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET assembly, or game-specific library.

A documented Windows 10 record lists version 10.0.19041.1, while older public records include Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista, and Windows XP. Those records are historical examples, not proof that one particular version, file size, or architecture applies to every Windows installation.
Errors associated with mmfutil.dll
Windows or an application may show messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because MMFUtil.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because MMFUtil.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading MMFUtil.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The file MMFUtil.dll is missing or corrupt.”
- “Failed to load MMFUtil.dll.”
- “MMFUtil.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Cannot find
C:WindowsSystem32wbemMMFUtil.dll.”
These are generic DLL-loader messages. They do not identify one standard game or application that normally uses this file. The problem may be the file itself, another dependency, the calling application, or the Windows component store.
Before repairing anything, note:
- The exact error text.
- The program or game that displays it.
- Whether the error started after Windows Update, an installation, disk cleanup, malware detection, or an antivirus action.
- Whether the file exists at
C:WindowsSystem32wbemMMFUtil.dll. - Your Windows edition and build.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
This is the safest first repair when mmfutil.dll is missing, corrupted, or cannot be loaded. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which provides the clean source files that SFC uses. SFC then checks protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies where possible.
Recommended Free Tools
Microsoft specifically recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker repair guide.
Run Windows Update first
- Right-click Start and select Settings.
- In Windows 11, select Windows Update.
- In Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on restarting.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Select Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause. When it completes, run:
sfc /scannow
SFC may report one of several outcomes:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected system files appear intact.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart Windows and test the affected program.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: continue to the CBS log and recovery steps below.
- Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: restart Windows, open Command Prompt as administrator again, and repeat the process.
Restart after both commands complete. Launch the program that produced the error and check whether the message returns.
If the file is still missing, check the expected location in File Explorer:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Press Windows key + E.
- Click the address bar.
- Enter:
C:WindowsSystem32wbem
- Press Enter.
- Look for
MMFUtil.dll.
Do not replace the file manually if it exists but the error continues. A dependency of the DLL may be missing, or the application may be loading an incompatible copy.
Manually searching Windows logs and repeating repair commands can become tedious, especially when several components are damaged. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows what it detects, while repair actions are performed by the full version; it is optional, and DISM plus SFC remain the appropriate built-in Windows repair path.
Review the SFC details
If SFC could not repair everything:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Run:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
- Press Enter.
- Open the
sfcdetails.txtfile on your desktop. - Look for entries mentioning
MMFUtil.dll, wbem, or other files that could explain the failure.
The log may show that the reported DLL was not the only damaged component. If DISM and SFC repeatedly fail, move to the Windows recovery options rather than copying a replacement file from the internet.
Fix 2: Use the Windows 11 repair reinstall
Supported Windows 11 systems may offer Fix problems using Windows Update. This reinstalls the current Windows version, repairs system files and components, and preserves apps, personal files, and settings.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
- Keep the computer connected to power and connected to the internet.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
The option may not appear on every Windows 11 installation. Microsoft documents this process in its repair reinstall guide.
After Windows restarts, test the affected program. If the option is unavailable or the error remains, use an official Windows repair installation or recovery path. Microsoft’s recovery options explain the available escalation choices.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
An antivirus product may quarantine a legitimate file after a false positive, or malware may have altered or removed it. Do not restore a quarantined file merely because its name is MMFUtil.dll.
To inspect Microsoft Defender’s records:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections related to
MMFUtil.dllor thewbemdirectory. - Open a detection to inspect its path, threat name, action, and status.
Microsoft documents Protection History in its Windows Security guidance.

Consider restoration only when all of these details make sense:
- The original path is the Windows WMI directory.
- The publisher and signature identify Microsoft.
- The detection details indicate a likely false positive rather than an active threat.
- A current security scan does not find related malware.
- DISM and SFC do not restore the file.
If you restore a file, run a full updated security scan afterward. If the file disappears again, suspect malware, disk corruption, or an ongoing security-product issue rather than repeatedly downloading replacements.
Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If Windows passes DISM and SFC but only one application fails, the application may be damaged or may depend on another missing DLL. There is no reliable public evidence that one particular modern game or application is the normal trigger for MMFUtil.dll.
First use the application’s own repair option:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its menu button, if available.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Launch the application again.
If there is no Repair option, uninstall and reinstall the program using its official installer or its official game launcher.

Before reinstalling, back up local saves, configuration files, and licenses if the program stores them outside cloud synchronization. Do not assume that reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will fix this specific file. MMFUtil.dll is identified as a Windows WMI component, and its normal repair path is Windows servicing.
If the application’s own documentation specifically identifies a missing runtime, install that runtime from Microsoft. Otherwise, avoid adding unrelated redistributables simply because the error uses the word “DLL.”
Fix 5: Check Windows Features only when the application requires one
Windows optional features can affect applications, but MMFUtil.dll should not be repaired by randomly disabling and re-enabling system features. WMI is part of Windows management infrastructure, not a feature that should be toggled casually.
If the affected program’s official documentation requires a particular Windows feature:

- Press Enter.
- Review the feature named by the application’s documentation.
- Enable it only if it is required and currently disabled.
- Select OK.
- Allow Windows to apply the change.
- Restart if requested.
- Test the application again.
Do not use this window to remove WMI-related components or experiment with unrelated features. If Windows reports that it cannot complete the change, return to DISM and SFC, then consider a repair reinstall.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore can help when the problem began after a driver installation, failed software installation, system configuration change, or other recent Windows change. It rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs while normally leaving personal files untouched.
To check for a restore point:
- Open Start.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open the matching result.
- Select System Restore.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the operation.
Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guide.
If there is no suitable restore point, do not create a new one and expect it to repair the old problem. Continue with Windows repair or installation media.
Fix 7: Check drivers and storage when corruption returns
A driver is not a known direct provider of MMFUtil.dll, but a failed driver or system installation can damage Windows components. If the error started immediately after a graphics, chipset, storage, or motherboard-driver change, check Device Manager.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to the recent change, such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, System devices, or Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the driver provider, date, and status.
- If the issue began after an update and Roll Back Driver is available, use it.
- Otherwise, select Update Driver and use the manufacturer’s official package when appropriate.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not replace MMFUtil.dll with a driver download. The driver and the Windows system file are separate issues.
Finding the correct driver manually can mean comparing hardware IDs, Windows compatibility, and several manufacturer packages. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan that identifies what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and the device manufacturer remains the definitive source for a specific driver.
If Windows files become damaged again after repair, run a full updated security scan, check drive health using the storage manufacturer’s tools, and back up important data. Repeated corruption can indicate a failing drive or malware.

32-bit, 64-bit, System32, and SysWOW64
Do not choose a replacement DLL based on whether your game or application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Windows uses system-file redirection and component servicing to manage files for different architectures. The application’s bitness does not automatically tell you whether a file belongs in System32 or SysWOW64. For this file, the documented location is:
C:WindowsSystem32wbemMMFUtil.dll
Public historical records disagree about some PE-type and architecture details. That is another reason to let DISM and SFC restore the copy matching your installed Windows build. Do not copy a 32-bit file into System32, move a file into SysWOW64, or place a system DLL beside a game executable as a workaround.
What not to do
Do not download mmfutil.dll from a DLL website
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- Malware disguised with a familiar filename.
- A file from the wrong Windows build.
- The wrong architecture.
- An unsigned or modified binary.
- A file with incompatible dependencies.
- A replacement that hides the real component-store damage.
There is no verified official Microsoft standalone download for mmfutil.dll. The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows component servicing, Windows recovery, official installation media, and the affected application’s official installer when the application itself is damaged.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Do not install Visual C++ just because the message mentions a DLL
MMFUtil.dll is associated with WMI Snapin Helpers and Microsoft Windows. It is not identified as part of Visual C++ 2015. Install a Visual C++ Redistributable only when the application’s own documentation or a separate loader error specifically requires it.
Do not run regsvr32 as a universal repair
Some public PE metadata reports DllRegisterServer and DllUnregisterServer exports for at least one Windows build. That does not mean users should register the file manually.
Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation describes it as a tool for DLLs designed for self-registration. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command. Do not run:
regsvr32 mmfutil.dll
unless a specific Microsoft or application repair procedure explicitly requires it.

FAQ
Is mmfutil.dll malware?
The legitimate file is a Microsoft Windows component associated with WMI Snapin Helpers. A filename alone does not prove authenticity. Check its path, digital signature, Protection History, and scan results. A copy in an unexpected user or application directory deserves extra scrutiny.
Where should mmfutil.dll be located?
The documented location is:
C:WindowsSystem32wbemMMFUtil.dll
Do not infer a different destination from the application’s bitness.
Does Windows 10 or Windows 11 include it?
Public records document the file in Windows builds and older Windows releases, but current public Microsoft documentation does not provide a universal version, size, or architecture statement for every Windows 10 and Windows 11 edition. Let Windows servicing restore the correct copy for the installed build.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I reinstall DirectX, .NET, or Visual C++?
Not as the first response to this file. MMFUtil.dll is identified as a Windows WMI component. Run DISM followed by SFC, install pending Windows updates, and repair the affected application if only that application fails.
What if the file exists but the error remains?
The reported problem may involve a dependency, a wrong copy, an incompatible application binary, or a damaged Windows component. Record the exact path and inspect Event Viewer:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Check Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System.
- Look around the time of the failure.
- Record the application name, faulting module, and error details.
Do not overwrite the existing file blindly.
What information should I provide when asking for further help?
Include your Windows edition and build, the exact error message, the affected program, the expected file path, whether MMFUtil.dll exists, the results of DISM and SFC, relevant Event Viewer details, and whether Windows Security quarantined anything.
When should I use installation media or reset Windows?
Use official repair installation or recovery options when DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows, the Windows 11 repair reinstall is unavailable, System Restore has no suitable point, or corruption returns after repair. Back up important files before any reset or clean installation.
