r14pskit.dll Missing: Repair Autodesk Plot Tools the Safe Way

r14pskit.dll is an Autodesk application file, not a Windows system file. If Windows reports that r14pskit.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair or reinstall the Autodesk program that produced the error rather than copying a replacement DLL into System32.

The file is identified as the Autodesk Hardcopy Plot Style Table Wizard DLL and belongs to the Autodesk Hardcopy Subsystem. It has appeared with older Autodesk products, including AutoCAD-derived software, Mechanical Desktop, plot-style tools, and some DWG Viewer components. The exact Autodesk product and release cannot be determined from the filename alone.

Before you start

Write down these details from the error message:

  • The complete error text
  • The Autodesk application that will not start
  • The full path shown for r14pskit.dll, if one is displayed
  • Your Windows version
  • Whether the problem began after an update, uninstall, cleanup, antivirus detection, or interrupted installation
  • Whether other Autodesk programs still open

Do not download the file from a DLL mirror. An unofficial copy may contain malware, belong to another Autodesk release, use the wrong architecture, or still fail because another dependency is missing. The safe source is the original Autodesk installation media, an authorized Autodesk installer, Autodesk Account, or Autodesk Support.

Fix 1: Repair the Autodesk product that shows the error

Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes

This is the most likely fix. A repair restores missing or damaged files from the product’s original installation source, including application DLLs that do not belong in Windows system folders.

Older Autodesk installations

  1. Close the Autodesk application.
  2. Press Windows key + R.
  3. Type appwiz.cpl.
  4. Press Enter to open Programs and Features.
  5. Find the Autodesk product named in the error.
  6. Right-click it and select Uninstall/Change.
  7. Choose Repair.
  8. Follow the installer prompts.
  9. Restart Windows.
  10. Open the same Autodesk application again.

If the repair completes successfully, the application should start without the r14pskit.dll message. If the program still fails, repeat the process and select Reinstall instead of Repair, if that option is available.

Repair normally restores missing product files. Reinstalling goes further by restoring files and installation information from the original package.

Newer Autodesk installations

Some newer Autodesk products do not expose a Repair option in Programs and Features. In that case:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose Installed apps or Apps & features.
  4. Search for the Autodesk product named in the error.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Uninstall.
  7. Restart Windows if prompted.
  8. Reinstall the exact product and release from an authorized Autodesk installer.

Do not install a different Autodesk application merely because its name also includes AutoCAD, DWG, or Design. r14pskit.dll is tied to the application’s own files and release. A DLL from another Autodesk product may not match the program that is failing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Reinstall the exact Autodesk release

Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes

Use this fix when Repair is unavailable, Repair reports an error, or the original installation is incomplete.

  1. Confirm the product name in the error or installed-program list.
  2. Check Settings → Apps → Installed apps for the product.
  3. If it is present, uninstall it using its Autodesk uninstaller.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Obtain the same product and release from your Autodesk Account, original installation media, or Autodesk Support.
  6. Run the installer as an administrator:
  7. Right-click the installer.
  8. Select Properties.
  9. Open the Compatibility tab.
  10. Select Run this program as an administrator, if needed.
  11. Select Apply, then OK.
  12. Run the installation.
  13. Restart Windows.
  14. Test the application and any plot-style-table tools that previously failed.

For a retired Autodesk product, the installer may not appear in your current product list. Check the previous-version area of Autodesk Account if your license permits access. Some older releases require help from Autodesk Support or Autodesk Assistant.

Do not use a newer product’s installer to replace a legacy product’s files unless Autodesk specifically identifies it as compatible. Older applications can also depend on a particular 32-bit or 64-bit installation layout.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes

Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a legitimate application file. This is more likely if the error appeared immediately after a scan or after an Autodesk update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the app.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections.
  7. Look for an entry naming r14pskit.dll or the Autodesk installation directory.

Do not restore the file automatically. Restore it only when all of the following are true:

  • It came from a trusted Autodesk installation.
  • The product and installation path match the application that is failing.
  • The detection has been reviewed and determined to be incorrect.
  • You can repair or reinstall the application immediately afterward.

Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious file can expose the computer. If you are uncertain, leave the file quarantined and reinstall the Autodesk product from an authorized source instead.

After restoring a verified file, run the Autodesk repair process. A restored file may not be the correct version if the installation was already damaged.

Fix 4: Confirm the file is in the Autodesk product directory

Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes

An Autodesk application DLL normally belongs beside the Autodesk executable or inside that product’s installation directory. It does not normally belong in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To inspect the application path:

  1. Find the Autodesk shortcut.
  2. Right-click it.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Review the Target field.
  5. Select Open File Location.
  6. Look in that folder and its product subfolders for r14pskit.dll.

If the file is missing from the expected directory, repair or reinstall the product. Do not copy a file from another computer, another Autodesk product, or an internet download.

If the error names a different directory, such as a temporary folder or an unrelated application folder, that is important evidence. It may indicate an incorrect shortcut, an incomplete installation, or software attempting to load the wrong copy.

Do not place the file in both System32 and SysWOW64. Those folders are intended for Windows-managed components, and copying an Autodesk DLL there can create version conflicts without fixing the application.

Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes

A legacy Autodesk product may be 32-bit even when installed on 64-bit Windows. A DLL from one architecture cannot reliably replace a DLL from another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the application architecture by reviewing:

  1. The Autodesk product’s documentation or installer requirements.
  2. The application’s installation directory.
  3. The error path.
  4. The product’s Properties and compatibility settings.

Do not assume that a 64-bit copy of Windows requires every application DLL to be 64-bit. A 32-bit Autodesk program may require its own 32-bit files.

The correct repair is to reinstall the product that generated the error. Do not solve an architecture mismatch by renaming files or copying r14pskit.dll from another Autodesk installation.

Fix 6: Install a Visual C++ Redistributable only when the error identifies it

Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes

r14pskit.dll is an Autodesk DLL, not a Visual C++ runtime file. There is no verified evidence that one particular Visual C++ Redistributable is required for every installation containing it.

A runtime repair is reasonable only if the error also names a missing Microsoft runtime DLL, or if the Autodesk installer specifically requires one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable page and choose the package that matches the application and operating system. Microsoft distributes packages including:

  • vc_redist.x86.exe
  • vc_redist.x64.exe
  • vc_redist.arm64.exe

For a 32-bit Autodesk application on 64-bit Windows, the x86 package may be relevant. Install the x64 package only when the application or installer requires it. Avoid third-party runtime bundles.

After installation:

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Run Autodesk Repair again.
  3. Start the Autodesk application.
  4. Check whether the error has changed.

If the same r14pskit.dll message remains, stop installing random runtime packages. Repair the parent Autodesk product instead.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes, plus restart time

Windows component corruption is less likely when only one Autodesk application fails. Use these commands when several unrelated programs report missing system files, Windows features are malfunctioning, or the Autodesk installer itself cannot operate normally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.

  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the Autodesk application again.

Do not close the Command Prompt while either scan is running. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test. If it reports that it could not repair everything, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once.

Outbyte PC Repair can show what is wrong when manually repeating SFC and DISM leaves you guessing; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the Autodesk program remains the definitive fix for a missing application DLL.

These commands will not normally recreate an Autodesk file. They repair Windows components, not the complete contents of an Autodesk installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 8: Install Windows updates and restart

Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes

A pending Windows update or restart can interfere with installers and legacy applications.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart Windows, even if the update page does not insist on it.
  6. Run Autodesk Repair or the Autodesk installer again.
  7. Test the application.

Windows Update does not normally recreate r14pskit.dll. Treat this step as system preparation, not as a replacement for repairing Autodesk software.

Fix 9: Update or reinstall related drivers only when symptoms point to them

Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes

A graphics or printer driver is not the normal source of r14pskit.dll, but driver problems can affect Autodesk display, plotting, or hardware communication. Use this step only if the application starts but crashes during plotting, rendering, or device access.

Check Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters.
  4. Expand Printers, Print queues, or the relevant hardware category.
  5. Right-click the affected device.
  6. Select Update driver.
  7. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Test the Autodesk application.

If the issue began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when available.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the work of hunting through many driver versions; its free scan shows outdated drivers, while installation is completed by the full version. It is optional, and it will not replace the Autodesk repair or reinstall required for a missing r14pskit.dll.

Do not remove display or printer drivers simply because the DLL error mentions an Autodesk plotting tool. Reinstall the Autodesk product first unless Device Manager shows a separate hardware problem.

Fix 10: Use Windows Features only for a separately identified dependency

Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes

Turning on random Windows Features is not a reliable repair for an Autodesk DLL. Check this area only if the Autodesk product’s installer or error specifically names a Windows component such as .NET Framework.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
optionalfeatures
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Review the Windows Features list.
  3. Enable only the feature required by the Autodesk installer or product documentation.
  4. Select OK.
  5. Restart Windows if prompted.
  6. Run Autodesk Repair or reinstall the product.

Do not enable every feature in the list. If no required feature is identified, close the dialog and return to the Autodesk repair path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should you run regsvr32?

Usually, no.

The .dll extension does not mean a file should be registered. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide COM or ActiveX self-registration entry points. There is no reliable evidence that r14pskit.dll is a self-registering COM server or that Autodesk instructs users to register it manually.

Commands such as these are not a general solution:

regsvr32 r14pskit.dll
regsvr32 /i r14pskit.dll
regsvr32 /u r14pskit.dll

They may produce another error, change nothing, or create confusion about whether the correct file was used. If the DLL is missing, regsvr32 cannot restore it. If a dependency is missing, registration does not install that dependency.

Use regsvr32 only when official documentation for the specific Autodesk component explicitly requires it and identifies the correct file and architecture.

What caused the error?

The most likely causes are:

Cause Appropriate response
Damaged or incomplete Autodesk installation Repair, then reinstall the exact product
Failed update or interrupted setup Reinstall from an authorized installer
Antivirus quarantine Review Protection history and reinstall if uncertain
Wrong Autodesk release or architecture Install the product that generated the error
Missing dependency Repair Autodesk first; install Microsoft runtime only when identified
Windows component corruption Run DISM, then SFC
Unsupported legacy environment Obtain an authorized older installer and check compatibility
Incorrect file location Restore the product through its installer, not system folders

A message saying “the specified module could not be found” does not always mean r14pskit.dll itself is absent. It can also mean that one of the DLL’s dependencies is missing. That is why copying the named file alone often fails.

If reinstalling still does not work

Collect this information before contacting Autodesk Support or an administrator:

  • Full error text
  • Autodesk product name
  • Product release, if known
  • Windows version
  • Full path shown for r14pskit.dll
  • Whether the file exists in the Autodesk product directory
  • Whether Windows Security quarantined it
  • Whether Repair completed or failed
  • Whether reinstalling produced an installer error
  • Whether other Autodesk applications work
  • Whether the product is 32-bit or 64-bit, if known

Also check the Autodesk installer logs and the original installation media. If the same error returns after every reinstall, investigate an incompatible legacy release, security-software interference, permissions, a missing dependency, or a damaged installation source.

System Restore is a last resort when the application worked recently and a known system change preceded the failure. Create a backup first. System Restore does not replace obtaining the correct licensed Autodesk installer.

FAQ

Is r14pskit.dll a Windows file?

No. It is an Autodesk application DLL associated with the Autodesk Hardcopy Subsystem. There is no reliable evidence that Windows installs it as a normal System32 or SysWOW64 component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which program uses r14pskit.dll?

Public file inventories associate it with older Autodesk products, including Mechanical Desktop, AutoCAD-related software, plot-style tools, and DWG Viewer components. The exact program cannot be identified from the filename alone.

Is it a Visual C++ or DirectX file?

No. Its documented identity is Autodesk-specific. Do not treat it as a Microsoft runtime or graphics-driver DLL.

Can I download r14pskit.dll separately?

You should not. A downloaded copy can be malicious, incompatible, or incomplete. Restore it through Autodesk Repair, an authorized reinstall, original installation media, Autodesk Account, or Autodesk Support.

Should I put it in System32?

No. Put application files back through the Autodesk installer. Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64 by default.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will regsvr32 fix it?

Not normally. Registration does not restore a missing file or its dependencies, and there is no verified indication that this DLL is a self-registering COM component.

Will SFC fix the error?

Only if Windows itself is damaged and the problem extends beyond one Autodesk application. SFC does not normally restore an Autodesk application DLL.

What is the safest fix?

Identify the Autodesk program named by the error and run its official Repair option. If Repair fails or is unavailable, reinstall that exact product and release from an authorized source.
