If the game is GPU-limited, lowering render scale or resolution and reducing demanding effects such as anti-aliasing or ambient occlusion are sensible first tests—not universal fixes. Windows, GPU, display, driver, game mode, and the particular scene all affect which options are available and whether they help.
Which settings should you change first?
Begin with the symptom you want to address: low frame rate, uneven frame delivery, input that feels delayed, or a hard-to-read interface. Then change the setting most closely related to it. A graphics adjustment may help when the GPU is doing too much work, but it will not necessarily solve every slowdown in an MMO.
When frame rate is low or inconsistent
In the game’s graphics menu, try reducing render scale or display resolution, then consider lowering anti-aliasing, ambient occlusion, or shadows if those options are available. AMD lists lower quality presets, reduced rendering effects, render scale, and resolution among its example recommendations for poor performance. These are starting points, not a diagnosis of your particular bottleneck.
If the image becomes unnecessarily soft or effects look too compromised, restore the setting or raise quality gradually. AMD also documents recommendations to increase preset quality, rendering effects, render scale, or resolution where available. The goal is a balance you prefer, not the highest possible FPS regardless of clarity.

When input feels delayed
Test relevant latency and frame-rate options individually. NVIDIA’s Control Panel documents Low Latency Mode and Max Frame Rate, but their availability depends on the graphics card and application. Low Latency Mode limits frames queued for GPU processing: On limits the queue to one frame, while Ultra minimizes it. Max Frame Rate caps the rendered frame rate. Neither setting is a guaranteed improvement in every MMO.
When the interface is hard to read
Look for the game’s own controls for UI scale, text size, contrast, HUD density, combat text, notifications, and optional animations. Adjust them to improve readability and awareness, while keeping important combat, group, and system alerts visible. Interface changes may improve usability, but the available evidence does not establish that changing them increases frame rate.
Adjust graphics in the game first
Use the graphics menu as the first place to make reversible changes. Options vary by title, so use only controls the game actually provides and keep a note of the original values.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
- Render scale or resolution: Lowering either is a useful experiment when GPU workload appears to be the issue; image sharpness may decrease.
- Anti-aliasing and ambient occlusion: Reduce or disable them to test whether the visual cost is worth the performance trade-off.
- Shadows and quality presets: Lower them one step at a time if the game offers those controls. A preset may change several options together, making it harder to identify which change mattered.
For a meaningful comparison, revisit a similar activity or scene where practical. Crowded encounters can be useful for reproducing a problem, but a single result does not establish whether the cause is graphics, CPU load, network conditions, or the game server.

Check Windows graphics options on Windows 11
Windows 11 includes graphics preferences that may apply to specific game and display configurations. Restart the game after changing either option so it can use the new setting.
Enable or evaluate windowed-game optimizations
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Find Optimizations for windowed games and evaluate the option for a compatible game.
- Restart the game before comparing results.
Microsoft says this feature applies to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running windowed or borderless. It changes presentation behavior to use a newer flip-model path intended to reduce frame latency; it is not a general setting for every game or display mode. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 windowed-game optimization guidance.

Choose a preferred GPU for a game
On a system with multiple GPUs, the same Windows Graphics area lets you select a graphics preference for an individual game. The choices include Let Windows decide, Power saving, and High performance. If a game is using the less capable or power-saving GPU, test the appropriate preference, save it, then restart the game. This choice is relevant to multi-GPU systems; a single-GPU desktop may not have a useful selection to make.
NVIDIA also documents a per-program preferred graphics processor for supported power-saving GPU systems. A program that is already running continues to use its existing GPU until it is restarted. Details are in NVIDIA’s Manage 3D Settings reference.

Driver settings are optional experiments, not replacements for a game’s own controls. In NVIDIA Control Panel, program-specific settings can let you test Low Latency Mode or a Max Frame Rate cap when supported by the hardware and application. Change one control, restart the game if needed, and compare the same kind of play before deciding whether to keep it.

A frame-rate cap changes the maximum rendered frame rate; it does not by itself prove that frame delivery is smoother or input is more responsive. Judge the result using the outcome you care about—frame-time consistency, responsiveness, image quality, or some combination—rather than FPS alone.

Mouse input
Raw input and mouse DPI can affect how control feels, but games implement input differently. NVIDIA’s PlanetSide 2 Tweak Guide recommends raw mouse input in that game’s context and discusses DPI. Its wording is: “Use Raw Mouse Input: Enabled, any sensitivity and movement filters external to your mouse will be ignored, and only its internal settings will be observed.” Treat that as PlanetSide 2-specific guidance, not a rule for every MMO. If your game offers raw input, compare it enabled and disabled with your usual sensitivity and movement.
The same guide discusses VSync and recommends keeping frame rate above 30 in its particular PlanetSide 2 advice. That figure is not a general MMO threshold. Test VSync in your own game and display setup rather than assuming one setting is always best.

Interface readability and accessibility
Use the game’s UI controls where available to make names, combat information, and alerts easy to distinguish. Xbox Accessibility Guidelines cover text display, contrast, UI navigation, and visual distraction or motion settings as usability considerations. Windows accessibility settings also include text size, visual effects, pointer customization, and color filters; they can improve comfort but are distinct from an MMO’s own UI scaling and do not establish a game-rendering performance gain. See Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guidelines and Windows Settings accessibility overview.
Do not remove useful HUD elements or alerts just to make the screen look cleaner. NVIDIA’s PlanetSide 2 guide describes disabling the HUD for screenshots and turning off friend login notifications as examples of that game’s controls, not performance recommendations for MMOs generally.
Measure changes with a repeatable comparison
- Record your baseline. Note the current setting and the symptom you want to improve, such as low FPS, stutter, delayed-feeling input, or unreadable text.
- Change one relevant option. For graphics, start with render scale, resolution, or a costly effect. For a compatible windowed or borderless DirectX 10/11 game on Windows 11, evaluate the applicable Windows option. For readability, adjust the UI without hiding critical alerts.
- Repeat comparable gameplay. Use the same type of activity or scene and, where practical, similar conditions. Compare average FPS and frame-time consistency, then separately judge input response, image quality, and alert readability.
- Keep or revert. Keep a change only if it improves the outcome you chose without an unacceptable trade-off. Restore the original value if it does not help, then test another option.
AMD’s Game Advisor documentation describes reports that can include average FPS, a 95th-percentile frame-time measure, frame-time graphs, and recommendations. Its recommendations must be applied manually, and not every game exposes every option. AMD says monitoring may take up to 90 seconds; that is a tool operation detail, not a performance benchmark. See AMD’s Game Advisor instructions.
FPS alone does not capture every aspect of smoothness: compare frame-time behavior and perceived input response as well. If the game or tool provides no relevant measurement, use the same activity before and after and be cautious about attributing a change to one setting.
