Portal is a screen-and-controls remote player, not a standalone console: its standard Remote Play mode streams games installed on your paired PS5. If you want to play while your PS5 is off, check the separate cloud-streaming requirements—PlayStation Plus Premium, regional availability, and eligibility for the specific game.
Choose between Remote Play and cloud streaming
These are different ways to use Portal, with different requirements. Decide which one matters to you before purchasing.

Sony describes Remote Play as connecting to a paired PS5 to play games installed on that console, without requiring PlayStation Plus. See PlayStation’s 2025 announcement and the Portal support page for current details.
Confirm your PS5 and game setup
Remote Play requires a PS5
Portal Remote Play connects to a PS5, not a PS4. The PS5 must have internet access and be on or in Rest Mode, and it must be paired with the Portal. If you do not own a PS5, or expect Portal to run games independently, this is not the right use case.

Check the games and peripherals you rely on
Not every PS5 game or feature is compatible. Games requiring a VR headset or certain additional peripherals are excluded. Check the requirements for the specific titles you intend to play before buying, especially if their controls depend on hardware beyond the Portal’s built-in controls.
PS5 apps in the Media tab are not supported over Remote Play, so Portal should not be treated as a way to use those media apps on a handheld screen.
Check Wi-Fi where you will actually play
Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum connection speed for Portal use and recommends 15 Mbps for a better experience. These are guidance thresholds, not guarantees of smooth play: quality depends on the network environment and the game. Check the connection at the places you expect to use Portal, not only at the router or in a speed test elsewhere.

Cloud streaming has its own published minimums: 5 Mbps upload and download to establish a session, 7 Mbps for 720p, and 13 Mbps for 1080p. These figures describe minimum speed thresholds; they do not promise a particular level of responsiveness or picture quality. See Sony’s cloud-streaming requirements and Portal product guidance.

If you expect to use public Wi-Fi
Public Wi-Fi can work, including some networks that require an extra validation step, but sign-in procedures and the quality of the connection can limit use. Sony notes that public internet quality may be outside your control. Consider whether you can complete any network validation and whether the connection is dependable enough for the games you play.

Cloud streaming is the relevant option if you want Portal to play eligible games while your PS5 is off or in use by another account. It requires PlayStation Plus Premium, an eligible adult account, Wi-Fi, a supported country or region, and a game included in the streaming eligibility list. Both location and game availability can vary, so check Sony’s current country list and the specific game before relying on this feature.

Do not assume that a game you own can automatically be streamed from the cloud. Remote Play streams games installed on your own PS5; cloud streaming is a separate service with separate account, subscription, location, and title requirements.
Check audio and software support
Audio options
Portal supports wired audio through its 3.5 mm jack and wireless audio devices that use PlayStation Link, including PULSE Explore and PULSE Elite. A compatible headset is optional; audio accessories are not a prerequisite for using Portal.

Software updates
Portal features can change through system software updates. Sony’s update notes list version 7.0.0 as adding a 1080p High Quality option, and version 7.0.2 as improving performance and stability. Check the Portal system software notes for the current version and changes.
