Mobile gaming across Asia is not one uniform boom. AppsFlyer projected $66.7 billion in Asia-Pacific mobile-game revenue for 2025, while its country growth scores, Sensor Tower’s market snapshots and publisher-side payment estimates point to sharply different conditions by market. India’s audience scale, Southeast Asia’s changing distribution mix, and the distinct hit genres reported in China, Japan and South Korea are useful signals—but they measure different things and should not be collapsed into a single country ranking.
How to read the latest Asia-Pacific market signals
The available figures are a mix of forecasts, composite scores and store-based estimates rather than a harmonized official census. Their dates and coverage matter: a country’s growth score is not its revenue, and an app-store revenue estimate is not necessarily the whole market.
- Regional forecast: AppsFlyer projected that Asia-Pacific (APAC) would generate $66.7 billion in mobile gaming revenue in 2025. This is a projection, not a reported final 2025 result. AppsFlyer’s 2025 mobile app growth report.
- Country growth scores: AppsFlyer’s composite Growth Score ranked India at 52.2, Indonesia at 40.1, Vietnam at 36.2, the Philippines at 34.7, Japan at 34.1 and South Korea at 27.8. These are scores from the report’s chart, not revenue values or a direct estimate of market size.
- Audience and acquisition: AppsFlyer reported more than 650 million mobile gamers in India and a $0.03 acquisition cost in H1 2025. Those are separate indicators; the audience count does not establish spending or revenue per player.
- Country forecasts: AppsFlyer forecast Indonesia’s 2025 market at $555 million and Vietnam’s at $454 million. Treat these as forecast values, not comparable audited outcomes.
Because the figures use different measures and periods, they do not support a definitive revenue ranking across Asian countries. In particular, a large audience or strong growth score does not by itself show high monetization, profitability or revenue per player.
Southeast Asia: more mobile activity, multiple routes to revenue
Usage and app spending
Sensor Tower’s May 2026 summary of State of Mobile Southeast Asia says average mobile usage increased in 2025 and estimates that in-app purchase revenue across mobile apps reached $5.3 billion, up 16.3% year over year. That is an all-category app figure, not a games-only total. The summary’s download estimates cover the App Store and Google Play and exclude pre-installs, re-downloads and third-party Android marketplaces. Sensor Tower’s Southeast Asia report summary.

Out-of-app spending and distribution
A 2025 white-paper announcement from payments and commerce provider Coda and games research firm Niko Partners estimates that alternative app stores and out-of-app platforms account for about $6 billion, or 26% of mobile-game revenue across East and Southeast Asia combined. The same announcement says out-of-app monetization in Southeast Asia reached 38% of mobile gaming revenue in 2024, up from 21% two years earlier. These are commercial research estimates, not official national statistics. Coda and Niko Partners’ white-paper announcement.
The practical implication for publishers is that billing and discovery are not confined to a single app-store checkout. Local payment options and alternative distribution are part of the market picture, though their importance and implementation can differ by country. Sensor Tower’s 2025 Southeast Asia games report recommends localization, community engagement, personalized marketing, loyalty incentives and a seamless user experience as competitive priorities; these are strategic recommendations, not proven universal formulas. China, Japan and South Korea show different genre signals
Sensor Tower’s 2024 APAC report summary gives period-specific examples of how success can look different across markets. They are illustrations from the stated periods, not current popularity rankings. Its estimates focus on in-app purchases (IAP); the report excludes advertising revenue and, for China, third-party Android channels. Sensor Tower’s 2024 APAC report summary.
| Market and period | Reported signal | What it does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| China, 2024 report period | Tencent titles including Honor of Kings and Peacekeeper Elite featured strongly on China App Store charts; the report says Honor of Kings revenue rose 16% in its measured period. | A China App Store and IAP-focused signal, not a complete view of all platforms, advertising or third-party Android activity. |
| Japan, Q1 2024 | Mobile downloads rose 6% quarter over quarter and revenue rose 2%. Strategy titles including Whiteout Survival and Last War: Survival Game, alongside puzzle game Royal Match, supported the reported rebound. | A quarter-over-quarter market change and examples of contributing titles; it does not establish that these genres lead every period or player segment. |
| South Korea, January–April 2024 | Legend of Mushroom was an outlier against the report’s declining RPG trend. | A title-specific exception within the reported period, not evidence that all RPGs or idle RPGs were growing. |
These examples resist the idea of a single “Asian genre.” A market can have prominent strategy, puzzle, action or RPG titles at the same time, and a hit in one country does not establish equivalent audiences, monetization or competitive standing elsewhere.

Subscriptions are growing within free-to-play, not replacing it
Omdia forecasts Asian mobile in-app subscription revenue to rise from $3.6 billion in 2025 to $5.8 billion by 2029, a 12.7% compound annual growth rate. This is a forecast for mobile in-app subscriptions, not total gaming subscription revenue. Omdia says uptake varies by country alongside player preferences and popular genres. Omdia’s July 2025 forecast.
The model described by Omdia is typically layered onto free-to-play games: subscriptions can bundle resources, privileges or exclusive content alongside established mechanisms such as battle passes and loot boxes. Omdia analyst Chenyu Cui described subscriptions as gaining a role in a market defined by free-to-play; that is analyst commentary on the trend, not evidence that every country or game uses the same model.

India’s 2026 online-gaming rules are not a blanket game-registration rule
India’s Press Information Bureau said the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Rules, 2026 would come into force on May 1, 2026. Its April 22, 2026 release describes a determination mechanism for online money games and a registration framework for esports and categories of online social games that the government notifies. Registration applies to games intended to be offered as esports and to notified categories; it is not stated as a requirement for every mobile game. The release says notification decisions consider user risk, participation scale, financial transactions and country of origin. Press Information Bureau release on the 2026 rules.
For a specific compliance decision, consult the current Gazette or legal text: the press release summarizes the framework but is not a substitute for applying the operative rules to a particular game or service.
