Then reopen the world with Esc → Open to LAN → Start LAN World, record the temporary port shown in chat, and try Direct Connection with the host’s private IPv4 address and that port. A missing listing is often a discovery problem rather than proof that the game cannot connect.

What the missing LAN entry actually means
Minecraft LAN play has two separate parts. The host opens a single-player world and starts a temporary server. The guest then discovers the announcement in the Multiplayer menu and connects to the host’s local address and port. A firewall, VPN, antivirus filter or router setting can block the announcement while leaving the underlying connection usable.

If Direct Connection times out, investigate the address, port, network path and security rules before changing mods.
1. Confirm the edition and launch profile
Use Java Edition on every computer
This procedure is for Minecraft Java Edition. Java and Bedrock clients cannot join one another’s LAN worlds, even when they use the same world name and Wi-Fi network. Check the edition shown in each launcher before troubleshooting anything else.

Match the exact Minecraft release
Both players must launch the same Minecraft release that the host is running. Do not assume that two releases with similar numbers are compatible. Preview, snapshot and experimental builds can change networking or mod-loader behavior; leave those builds unless every player intentionally uses the same compatible build.
Minecraft’s official multiplayer guidance identifies an outdated client as a common cause and recommends using the current release for ordinary play. In a modded game, however, “current” means the release required by the host’s modpack, not necessarily the newest unmodded release.
Match the loader and profile
Forge, Fabric and NeoForge are different loader environments. A Fabric client cannot join a Forge world simply because both use the same Minecraft version. Select the same loader family and loader version in each launcher profile, then launch that profile rather than a vanilla installation.
2. Make modpack parity exact
Modded LAN connections are much less tolerant of differences than vanilla play. Compare the complete installation, not just the visible list of major mods.

Copying the same exported modpack profile is safer than manually selecting mods that look similar. CurseForge’s modded-LAN guidance likewise requires every player to have the exact same mods and versions for an Essential or modded setup.

When only one player can enter the world
If a guest receives a missing registry, missing mod, incompatible client or mod-rejection message, stop network troubleshooting. Export the host’s profile, compare the manifest and configuration files, and reinstall the guest profile from that export. Network changes cannot correct a content mismatch.

3. Reopen the world and capture the temporary port
The LAN address is created when the host opens the world. It is not a permanent server port and may change every time the world is reopened.
- On the host, launch the correctly modded Java profile.
- Load the single-player world that should be shared.
- Press Esc to open the pause menu.
- Choose Open to LAN.
- Select the desired game mode and whether cheats are allowed.
- Choose Start LAN World.
- Read the chat message announcing the LAN port and write down the number.
The official Minecraft guide describes this Open to LAN flow. Keep the world open while the guest connects; closing the world ends that temporary server.
4. Test discovery, then bypass it
Wait for the Multiplayer listing
On the guest, open Multiplayer and wait for the LAN world to appear. The guest and host must already be connected to the same reachable local network. A delayed listing can take a short while, but an indefinitely empty LAN section should be tested manually rather than repeatedly restarting the game.
Use Direct Connection
On the guest, select Direct Connection. Enter the host’s private IPv4 address, a colon, and the port shown in the host’s chat message. The format is:

Replace both values with the host’s current address and current LAN port. Do not enter a public internet address, the router’s address, or an old port copied from a previous session. CurseForge specifically recommends this fallback when the LAN world does not appear.
Interpret the result
- Direct Connection works: the server socket and route are usable; the failure is limited to LAN discovery. Continue using Direct Connection or repair discovery permissions.
- Direct Connection times out: verify the host address and fresh port, then check network profiles, firewall rules, VPN or antivirus filtering and router isolation.
- Connection refused: the address is reachable, but no process is accepting that port. The host may have closed the world, reopened LAN on a new port, or have host-side filtering rejecting the connection.
5. Verify that the computers share a communicating LAN
Check the network, not just the Wi-Fi name
Both devices need to be on a network that permits peer-to-peer traffic. The same wireless network name is not enough if the access point separates clients.
- Do not place one computer on guest Wi-Fi and the other on the main network.
- A cellular hotspot may isolate connected devices from one another.
- Some schools, workplaces and apartment networks use VLANs that block device-to-device traffic.
- Router “AP isolation,” “client isolation” or similar settings can prevent one wireless client from reaching another.
If the host and guest receive addresses from different isolated ranges, Direct Connection will fail regardless of the modpack. Move both systems to the same non-isolated home network or change the router’s isolation policy.
Set the operating-system network profile to Private or Trusted
Where the operating system offers network profiles, mark the home LAN as Private or Trusted rather than Public. Public profiles commonly apply stricter inbound rules that suppress Minecraft discovery or block Java’s listening socket.

6. Allow the correct Java runtime through security software
Create a private-network rule for Java
Allow the Java runtime used by the launcher and Minecraft on private networks on both computers. On Windows this is often a process named javaw.exe, but the exact path depends on the launcher and installation. Approving a different Java installation does not help if the modded profile uses another runtime.
When the operating system asks whether Java or Minecraft may communicate on a network, permit the private or home network option. Do not automatically allow the application on every public network.
Check antivirus, VPN and endpoint filters
Third-party antivirus suites may include network shields separate from the normal firewall. VPN clients can place the computer on a virtual adapter or block local-network traffic. Temporarily disconnect the VPN and pause the relevant network-filtering feature only long enough to test, then restore protection and create a narrow private-network exception for the correct Java executable.
“The firewall is disabled” is not conclusive. A security suite, a second firewall, a rule tied only to the Public profile, or a different Java installation can still block the path. Minecraft Help specifically advises checking firewall, antivirus and VPN settings, and CurseForge calls out Java permission on private networks.
7. Understand why discovery can fail while connection works
The LAN list relies on local discovery announcements. Those announcements use traffic that a firewall, access point or VPN can suppress independently of the Java connection to the host’s IP address and port.

Consequently, an empty Multiplayer list does not prove that the host’s server failed to start. If the manually entered address works, the practical fix is to use Direct Connection for that session or adjust the local discovery and network permissions. If the manual address also fails, the issue is no longer just discovery.

8. Use the error message to choose the next fix

9. Troubleshoot a modded-only failure methodically
Prove the network path with a controlled test
If both players can join a vanilla LAN world on the same network, the basic route is probably functional. Return to the modded profile and change one variable at a time: first confirm the same loader, then the same pack manifest, then configuration files. Avoid removing random mods from only one client, because that creates a second mismatch and obscures the original cause.
Look for mods that affect networking or authentication
Some mods alter login, authentication or packet handling. No universal list of problematic mods is established here, so treat this as a comparison task: check the pack documentation and compare the host and guest files rather than assuming every mod is harmless or every networking mod is broken.
Recreate the LAN session after every profile change
After changing a loader, mod or configuration, fully exit both game clients, relaunch the intended profiles, load the world and run Open to LAN again. Use the new chat port; a prior port belongs to the earlier session.
10. Know when LAN is the wrong architecture
LAN is designed for players on a communicating local network. It also makes the host’s single-player session the server: the host must keep the world open for others to play. If either condition is unacceptable, a dedicated or hosted modded server is the practical escalation.

Minecraft’s official guidance treats private-server setup as a separate option rather than a repair for a blocked LAN announcement. Choose it when players are remote, the router isolates clients, or the host should not have to stay in the world.
