Modded Minecraft Server Requirements: RAM, CPU and Storage

By VGSources Team 9 min read

For a small modded Java server, start with 4 GB of allocated RAM, 2–4 modern CPU cores with strong single-core performance, and a 15–25 GB SSD. A 10-player server usually fits that plan, while 15–30 players generally calls for 6–8 GB RAM and four cores. For 30 or more players, plan on 8–16 GB RAM, four or more cores, and at least 25 GB of fast storage. Large modpacks, terrain generation, high simulation distance, entity-heavy farms, backups and world growth can push every tier higher.

Baseline requirements by player count

Reactor Servers’ 2026 planning guide summarizes the relationship this way: a Minecraft server’s hardware needs depend on player count and world complexity. Its figures are useful starting points, not guarantees for every modpack or world.

Concurrent players Allocated RAM CPU Starting SSD capacity
1–5 2 GB 2 cores 10 GB
5–15 4 GB 2–4 cores 15 GB
15–30 6–8 GB 4 cores 25 GB
30+ 8–16 GB 4 or more cores 25 GB or more

These allocations refer to the server’s Java heap, not the total memory installed in the machine. The operating system, Java process overhead, filesystem cache, monitoring tools and backup jobs all need memory outside the heap. A host with exactly 4 GB of physical RAM should not reserve all 4 GB for Minecraft.

For a 10-player friend-group server, the 5–15-player row is the sensible starting point: 4 GB allocated to Java, two to four modern cores and at least 15 GB of SSD space. Leave room to increase the heap or store additional backups rather than filling the disk on day one.

How much RAM does a modded Minecraft server need?

Use the table as a starting allocation

RAM is usually the first constraint when a pack contains many content and automation mods. A small, lightly modded world can begin at 4 GB, but a pack with 100 or more mods commonly needs additional headroom. Very large packs can exceed the table’s upper tiers even with a modest player count.

Allocate memory based on observed usage under the load you expect. Watch the Java heap, garbage-collection pauses and tick times while several players explore, generate terrain and use machines. Increase the allocation when the process repeatedly approaches its limit or produces out-of-memory errors. Do not assume that adding unlimited RAM fixes slow ticks: an oversized Java heap can create longer garbage-collection pauses, and a CPU-bound main thread remains CPU-bound.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leave headroom for the rest of the system

  • Reserve memory for the operating system and its services.
  • Account for Java’s non-heap overhead and native memory.
  • Keep space for filesystem caching, which helps repeated world and region-file access.
  • Allow monitoring, log rotation and backup software to run without forcing the server into swap.

Swap or paging is not a substitute for adequate physical RAM. If the host starts swapping while the server is ticking, response time and chunk loading can deteriorate sharply.

CPU requirements: prioritize the main thread

Single-core speed matters most

Minecraft’s primary tick loop benefits more from strong per-core performance than from a large count of slow cores. SpongePowered documentation recommends a CPU with a large single-core speed and at least 2 GB of RAM, with more memory when running mods. In practice, favor a recent desktop-class processor or a hosting plan that clearly advertises strong per-core performance over an old many-core CPU with weak single-thread performance.

What extra cores actually do

Additional cores still have value. They give the operating system, networking, backups, map tools and other services somewhere to run while the main game thread is busy. They can also help mods that perform auxiliary work in parallel. They do not replace fast primary-thread performance, so a six-core processor is not automatically faster for Minecraft than a newer four-core processor.

  • Up to 5 players: two modern cores are a reasonable baseline.
  • 5–15 players: two to four cores provide room for mod and operating-system activity.
  • 15–30 players: plan around four strong cores.
  • 30 or more players: use four or more strong cores and test the exact pack before opening the server publicly.

CPU saturation often appears as rising tick time even when RAM usage looks comfortable. Lowering view or simulation distance, reducing entity counts and pregenerating terrain can help, but those changes do not turn a weak single core into a fast one.

Storage: SSD capacity and I/O speed

Why an SSD is important

Store the world, mods, configuration, logs and backups on an SSD, preferably NVMe. Reactor’s guide recommends SSD storage instead of an HDD because chunk loading depends heavily on disk speed. An HDD may work for a tiny test world, but random region-file access, exploration and frequent saves are more responsive on solid-state storage.

Capacity is more than the initial world

The 10–25 GB figures in the planning table are starting points. Reserve additional capacity for world growth, multiple generations of backups, crash reports, modpack downloads and temporary files. A newly created world can be small; a months-old world with explored dimensions and automated farms can be many times larger.

A 1TB NVMe SSD is a practical Amazon-searchable upgrade for a self-hosted machine that will keep several worlds and backup generations. That capacity is not an official Minecraft minimum; it simply gives a self-host more room than the baseline figures.

Plan a backup budget

  • Keep the live world separate from backup archives when possible.
  • Retain multiple restore points rather than overwriting one backup.
  • Measure the size of the largest world and multiply it by the number of generations you intend to keep.
  • Leave free space so saves and log files do not compete with a nearly full filesystem.

Java edition, Bedrock and client specifications are different

Do not use client requirements to size the server

Mojang Studios’ 2026 Java Edition guidance targets a player’s rendering experience: the minimum target is 1080p at 30 FPS on Fast settings, with 8 GB of system RAM when a discrete GPU is present or 12 GB with integrated graphics; the recommended target is 16 GB of system RAM and 1080p at 60 FPS on Fancy settings. Those figures describe the computer running the game client, including its graphics workload. They are not dedicated-server heap allocations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Server planning instead depends on concurrent players, mod count, loader, simulation and view distance, world complexity, entity activity and storage I/O. Use Mojang’s client figures to check each player’s PC, and use the player-count table to create an initial host plan.

Bedrock numbers do not size a modded Java server

The current Bedrock Dedicated Server page lists 4 GB of RAM and 180 MB to 1 GB of available disk space in its system-requirements block. Those values apply to Bedrock Dedicated Server and should not be transferred to a modded Java installation. Java mod loaders, large modpacks and their world data have different requirements.

Choose the correct Java version and mod loader

Match the loader to the pack

  • Fabric: described as lightweight and fast to update, often chosen for packs that emphasize performance or a smaller loader footprint.
  • Forge: has the largest established mod library and remains common for extensive, long-running packs.
  • NeoForge: presented as the modern successor for newer Minecraft versions.

The loader is not interchangeable. Install the exact loader build named by the pack, then use the Java version required by that Minecraft and loader combination.

Match Java to Minecraft

Reactor’s guide states that Minecraft 1.21.x requires Java 21 or newer as of 2025. Older versions have exceptions: Sponge documentation notes, for example, that Forge 1.16.5 requires Java 11. A server that starts with the wrong Java runtime may fail before loading mods, report unsupported class versions or behave unpredictably after an update.

Before changing versions, record the Minecraft version, loader version and Java executable currently used. Update them as a tested set rather than replacing Java alone on a live world.

World settings that change hardware demand

Exploration and chunk generation

New terrain generation is more demanding than players standing in already-loaded areas. Several players flying or traveling in different directions can trigger simultaneous chunk generation and disk writes. Pregenerating the area players will use moves that work to a controlled maintenance window, but it also consumes CPU, storage and time while it runs.

  • KEEP YOUR DRIVE UPDATED. Monitor your SSD’s performance and check for updates with the downloadable SANDISK Dashboard application.[5]

View distance and simulation distance

Higher view distance keeps more chunks loaded for clients; higher simulation distance makes more of those chunks process entities, redstone and machines. Reducing either setting can lower CPU and memory pressure when the server struggles. Choose values that fit the pack and player activity rather than copying a setting from an unmodded benchmark.

Entities and automation

Mob farms, item piles, villagers, moving machines and complex redstone systems create recurring tick work. A server can lag with free RAM if one base contains an unusually high entity count. Identify and limit the specific source before buying more memory.

Self-hosted or managed hosting?

Self-hosting requirements

Running the server on your own machine gives you hardware control, but you must maintain the Java runtime, loader, mod files, firewall and port forwarding. You are also responsible for backups, operating-system updates, disk health and network reliability. A spare desktop with a fast CPU and SSD can work well if it has enough physical RAM left after reserving resources for other workloads.

Managed hosting requirements

Managed Minecraft hosting is useful when you do not want to maintain Java, configure port forwarding, schedule backups or expose a home network. Compare providers on geographic location, current pricing, mod-loader support, Java-version controls, backup policy, network quality and DDoS protection. Confirm that the plan’s advertised RAM is dedicated to your server process or understand what is shared before purchasing.

A practical sizing and launch procedure

  1. Identify the exact pack: record its Minecraft version, loader, mod count and any author-provided memory guidance.
  2. Set the player target: use the highest number of people you expect online concurrently, not the number in your community chat.
  3. Choose a starting tier: select the table row that covers that player count, then add physical-memory headroom for the operating system and backups.
  4. Verify Java: install the runtime required by the Minecraft and loader version; Minecraft 1.21.x uses Java 21 or newer according to the cited 2025 guidance, while older packs can require Java 11.
  5. Use SSD or NVMe storage: place the live world and server files on fast storage, and reserve capacity for backup generations and future exploration.
  6. Test representative load: have several players explore, generate chunks and use the pack’s busiest machines while monitoring memory, tick time, CPU utilization and disk latency.
  7. Adjust one variable at a time: change heap allocation, distance settings, entity-heavy areas or CPU capacity separately so you can identify what actually improves the bottleneck.
  8. Automate recovery: schedule backups, test restoring one, and keep enough free disk space for a backup to complete without filling the filesystem.

Diagnosing lag and deciding what to upgrade

Symptoms that point to RAM pressure

  • Repeated out-of-memory errors or a heap that stays near its limit under normal load.
  • Long garbage-collection pauses that coincide with freezes.
  • Improvement after increasing the heap while CPU and disk latency remain acceptable.

Increase allocated RAM only when measurements show memory pressure, and ensure the machine has the physical memory to support the new heap without swapping.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Symptoms that point to CPU pressure

  • Tick time rises while heap usage remains moderate.
  • One CPU core is saturated even though total utilization appears low on a many-core system.
  • Lag spikes occur during chunk generation, high simulation distance or entity-heavy automation.

Reduce simulation work, pregenerate terrain or move to a processor with stronger per-core performance. Adding cores alone may not solve a saturated primary thread.

Symptoms that point to storage or capacity pressure

  • Chunk loading pauses coincide with high disk latency.
  • Backups fail because the filesystem is full.
  • World saves and log writes slow as free space approaches zero.

Move the workload to SSD or NVMe, remove obsolete files safely, expand capacity and retain a deliberate number of backup generations.

Planning checklist

  • Concurrent-player target is documented.
  • Minecraft version, loader and Java version are known to match.
  • Allocated RAM leaves operating-system and backup headroom.
  • CPU has strong single-core performance, not merely a high core count.
  • World and mods are on SSD or NVMe storage.
  • Capacity includes world growth, downloads, logs and multiple backups.
  • Simulation distance, view distance and entity activity are tested under realistic load.
  • Public servers have an appropriate network connection and DDoS protection.
  • A restore from backup has been tested before inviting more players.
