Yes, a modder has demonstrated PlayStation 5 game builds running on an Xbox Series X. The project, called PS5X, is an Xbox port of the open-source KytyPS5 emulator that runs inside the console’s official Developer Mode. It is not general PS5 backward compatibility, and the available demonstrations do not show a stable, consumer-ready way to play the broader PS5 library.
What PS5X actually is
Developer Devran Cosmo Uenal ported KytyPS5 to Xbox Series X and named the Xbox version PS5X. The software runs in Xbox Developer Mode, an official environment intended for development and testing rather than ordinary retail game use.

Reports published in September and October 2026 describe PS5X as an experimental research project. There is no established evidence of a public, consumer-ready release, a simple installation package, or reliable compatibility across commercial PS5 games.
Which PS5 games have been demonstrated?
VideoCardz reported four PS5 game builds booting in demonstrations:
#1 Best Overall
- FASTEST, MOST POWERFUL XBOX — Experience next-generation performance with 12 teraflops of processing power, delivering smoother gameplay, richer worlds, and faster responsiveness than any previous XBOX.
- TRUE 4K GAMING UP TO 120 FPS — Enjoy breathtaking visuals with true 4K resolution, HDR, and frame rates up to 120 FPS, plus hardware-accelerated ray tracing for a heightened level of realism.
- 1TB CUSTOM SSD AND XBOX VELOCITY ARCHITECTURE — Reduce load times dramatically with the custom 1TB NVMe SSD and XBOX Velocity Architecture, enabling lightning-fast performance and seamless world streaming.
- QUICK RESUME — Seamlessly switch between multiple games and resume exactly where you left off. No more waiting through title screens and loading bars.
- FOUR GENERATIONS OF GAMES — Play thousands of games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX, with many titles enhanced for better visuals and performance on XBOX Series X.
- GEX Trilogy
- Hellboy: Web of Wyrd
- Marvel Cosmic Invasion
- Quake II
All four recognized Xbox controller input. Some had working audio, although the reports did not identify which games produced sound. Quake II footage was described at approximately 25–45 frames per second. SlashGear’s account said performance sometimes dropped below 20 FPS and that input latency was noticeable.
Those observations represent short demonstrations, not independent testing. They do not establish that any title can be played from beginning to end without crashes, broken graphics, missing audio or severe slowdowns.

- What's in the box: Xbox Series X console, 1 Xbox Wireless Controller - Carbon Black, Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, Power cord.
- Equipped with AMD's Zen 2 and RDNA 2 architectures, DirectX ray tracing delivers true-to-life lighting, shadows and accurate reflections to create dynamic, living worlds.
- Memory: 16GB GDDR6 w/320 bit-wide bus; Memory Bandwidth: 10 GB @ 560 GB/s, 6 GB @ 336 GB/s; Internal Storage: 1TB Custom NVME SSD
- Gaming Resolution: True 4K; Performance Target: Up to 120 FPS; High Dynamic Range: Up to 8K HDR; Optical Drive: 4K UHD Blu-Ray; HDMI Features: Auto Low Latency Mode, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate, AMD FreeSync.
- Bundled with HDMI_Cable
These are not PlayStation exclusives
None of the four demonstrated games is a PlayStation-exclusive release. A later PS5X menu reportedly listed bigger games, including Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time and Gran Turismo 7, but the available reporting did not show those games running. A listing in a menu is therefore not evidence of compatibility.
Why running PS5 software on Xbox is technically difficult
KytyPS5 uses the Vulkan graphics API on PC. Xbox does not provide native Vulkan support, so PS5X must translate the emulator’s graphics work to Microsoft’s DirectX API. Uenal described the consequence directly: “Since Vulkan isn’t supported, everything needs to be translated to DirectX.”

- BEST VALUE IN GAMING — Experience next-gen speed and performance in the smallest XBOX ever. The XBOX Series S delivers powerful all-digital gameplay in a sleek, compact design.
- UP TO 120 FPS GAMEPLAY — Enjoy smooth, responsive gaming with frame rates up to 120 FPS, powered by XBOX Velocity Architecture, a custom NVMe SSD, and DirectX Raytracing for a heightened level of realism.
- 512GB CUSTOM SSD AND XBOX VELOCITY ARCHITECTURE — Reduce load times dramatically with the custom 512GB NVMe SSD and XBOX Velocity Architecture, enabling lightning-fast performance and seamless world streaming.
- QUICK RESUME — Seamlessly switch between multiple games and resume exactly where you left off. No more waiting through title screens and loading bars.
- FOUR GENERATIONS OF DIGITAL GAMES — Play thousands of digital games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX with backward compatibility. Many titles are enhanced for better visuals and performance. Smart Delivery ensures you always get the best version for your console.
This translation layer adds substantial engineering work and performance overhead. Improvements made in the PC version of KytyPS5 cannot simply be copied to Xbox unchanged. Graphics rendering, synchronization, shader handling and game-specific behavior all have to function through the DirectX path.
The developer describes PS5X as an experimental Xbox port running PS5 homebrew and game backups in Developer Mode. His statement that “some titles are already playable – with controller support and sound!” describes the demonstrated state, not a promise of broad compatibility.

What you need to run it—and what is not established
The demonstrations required an Xbox Series X using Developer Mode, but the reporting does not establish a public consumer installation guide, a verified download package, required firmware versions, encryption keys or a supported list of games. It also does not establish whether PS5X runs on Xbox Series S.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. How playable are the demonstrated games?
| Game or claim | Reported result | What the evidence does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| GEX Trilogy | Build reported booting; Xbox controller input recognized | Stable completion, consistent frame rate or complete audio |
| Hellboy: Web of Wyrd | Build reported booting; Xbox controller input recognized | Full playability or crash-free operation |
| Marvel Cosmic Invasion | Build reported booting; Xbox controller input recognized | Reliable performance through a full game |
| Quake II | Footage reported at roughly 25–45 FPS | A library-wide performance level; reports also noted sub-20-FPS dips and input latency |
No independent benchmark, total compatibility percentage or verified count of fully playable games has been published in the available reports. “Boots” can mean reaching a menu or entering a scene; it does not necessarily mean a game is practical to finish.
Is PS5 emulation on Xbox available yet?
Only in the limited sense that an experimental project has been demonstrated. The evidence does not support treating PS5X as an official Xbox feature, a replacement for a PS5, or a general backward-compatibility solution. Installing Developer Mode and obtaining a demonstration build, where available, would not guarantee that a particular game works.
Anyone assessing future updates should distinguish between a game reaching its menu, entering playable gameplay and completing reliably. Useful checks include frame-rate stability, graphics accuracy, audio, controller input, crashes, required firmware or keys, and whether the build is publicly downloadable.

The demonstrations show that Xbox Series X hardware can host an ambitious PS5-emulation experiment when software is adapted to its DirectX environment. They do not mean Xbox Series X can now play the PS5 catalog. For now, PS5X is best understood as a technical proof of concept with a handful of reported multiplatform builds, noticeable limitations and no established consumer-ready release.
