If you want a horror game for an October night, start with the kind of fear you enjoy: fogbound psychological dread, isolation aboard a damaged spaceship, or a desperate fight to survive in a bunker. These picks are not an objective ranking; they offer different routes into a Halloween session, from relentless pursuit to retro investigation and a gentler dark-fantasy alternative.
Three strong starting points for Halloween
These games suit different moods and play styles. Pick the one whose setting and kind of tension sound appealing, rather than assuming that one horror game is right for everyone.

Silent Hill 2 (2024): psychological dread in a fogbound town
Choose Silent Hill 2 if you want a story framed around grief, guilt and existential unease, with the fog-shrouded town setting the mood. Konami describes its 2024 release as a full remake of the 2001 PlayStation 2 original. The remake expands explorable areas, shifts to an over-the-shoulder view, revises combat and adds cut-scenes, so it is not simply the original presented with updated visuals. Konami’s European product page lists PlayStation 5 and PC/Steam and gives 8 October 2024 as the release date; treat those details as regional product information and check your local store for the edition you want.
Dead Space (2023): sci-fi survival horror aboard the Ishimura
Choose Dead Space if the Halloween atmosphere you want is a vast, hostile spacecraft rather than a haunted town. EA describes its remake as a rebuilt game set aboard the USG Ishimura, with frightening crew spaces, eerie atmospheric sound and tense, unpredictable moments. The shipboard isolation and mutated crew also feature in Le Monde’s 31 October 2023 Halloween selection. Its price information is historical, so use a current regional store listing to check today’s price and availability.

- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
Amnesia: The Bunker: vulnerable, improvisational survival
Choose Amnesia: The Bunker if you like having to improvise under pressure. PlayStation describes a lone French soldier in a First World War bunker with one bullet, scarce scavenged supplies and a noisy dynamo flashlight, while the enemy’s behavior is unpredictable. That combination makes resource management and the consequences of making noise central to the tension. PC Gamer recommends it for players seeking an especially frightening experience; that is an editorial judgment, not a guarantee that every player will react the same way.
The US PlayStation listing identifies PS4 as the platform and 6 June 2023 as the release date. It also says the game can be played on PS5, with a warning that some PS4 features may be absent. Check your local store listing for current availability and compatibility details.
Rank #2
- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.

| Surreal, story-led horror with survival combat | Alan Wake 2 | Its story follows Saga Anderson investigating ritual murders and Alan Wake in a looping dream dimension. Le Monde notes that the story can be complicated; whether that appeals depends on your taste. |
| Retro survival-horror investigation | Signalis | Le Monde’s 2023 description highlights dark corridors, ambushes, limited ammunition, inventory management, fixed camera views and locked doors. Its article listed PC, Switch, PlayStation and Xbox Game Pass at that time; check current platform and subscription listings. |
| Retro-styled investigation with cosmic or grotesque imagery | World of Horror | Le Monde describes it as a retro-styled option with a deliberately rough interface. |
PC Gamer’s Halloween guide also describes Bye Sweet Carole as a dark narrative choice for players who do not want grizzly horror or jumpscares. It offers a different doorway into a Halloween mood, rather than the same intensity as a survival-horror game.

- For atmosphere and symbolism: start with Silent Hill 2 if grief, guilt and an uncanny setting sound more appealing than a straightforward chase.
- For isolation: choose Dead Space if you want the hostile environment and eerie sound of a spacecraft to shape the experience.
- For resource pressure: pick Amnesia: The Bunker if scarcity, scavenging and an unpredictable enemy are the appeal.
- For pursuit: consider Alien: Isolation or Resident Evil Biohazard if being hunted is more compelling than unraveling a symbolic mystery.
- For story and strange logic: try Alan Wake 2 if you are open to a layered, surreal narrative alongside survival combat.
- For a less intense option: consider Bye Sweet Carole based on PC Gamer’s description, while keeping in mind that reactions to horror vary.
