If Modern Warfare 2 will not connect on PS5, first check Call of Duty and PlayStation Network service status, then confirm you are signed in and run the PS5 internet connection test. If services are available, work from simple local fixes—wired Ethernet, better Wi-Fi placement, and restarting the console and router—before changing router settings. The official support product is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II; a green service indicator does not rule out a problem with your own connection.
1. Check Call of Duty and PlayStation Network status
Check Activision’s Modern Warfare II connection guidance and the PlayStation Network status page before troubleshooting your home network. If either service reports an outage or maintenance, wait for it to clear and try again. Status pages change, so check them when the connection problem occurs rather than relying on an old report.
If the pages show no alert, make sure you are signed in to your PS5 account. Activision notes that normal service status does not eliminate other possible connection problems.
2. Run the PS5 internet connection test
On the console, open Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection. Note which part of the test fails, if any, before changing router settings. The result can help distinguish a console or local-network issue from trouble reaching online services. PlayStation’s PS5 connection troubleshooting guidance also recommends testing the connection and adjusting network settings when needed.

3. Check Wi-Fi, restart, and try Ethernet
Improve the Wi-Fi link
If the PS5 is on Wi-Fi, move it closer to the router and reduce obstacles between them. Restart the PS5 and router, then test the game again. Downloads, streaming, or other bandwidth-heavy activity on the network can also affect online play, so pause those activities while checking the connection.
Compare with a wired connection
If practical, connect the PS5 to the router with Ethernet and retest. Activision Support’s September 15, 2022 connection article says, “We strongly recommend using a wired Ethernet connection during online gameplay.” A wired test can help show whether Wi-Fi is contributing to the problem; it is not a guaranteed fix. The PS5 guide identifies a LAN cable for wired internet and notes it is not included with the console: PS5 CFI-21XX instruction manual.

4. Change router settings only after basic checks
Router configuration is more technical and varies by model and internet provider. If you are unfamiliar with these settings, ask your ISP or network administrator for help. Activision’s recommended progression is:
- In the router settings, test with UPnP enabled and port forwarding disabled. Retest the game.
- If the issue remains, turn UPnP off and try port forwarding with a static IP assigned to the PS5. Retest after the change.
- If the connection is still unresolved, Activision describes DMZ as a further console troubleshooting test. If you try it, remove the console’s static IP from the DMZ afterward.
Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether it affects the connection. Do not treat port forwarding or DMZ as required settings for every player. If you cannot locate the relevant options, consult your router manual or ISP. On a shared or institutional network, contact its administrator. PlayStation also advises consulting the ISP about router firmware or port settings in its internet connection setup guidance.

5. If the connection still fails
- Run the PS5 internet test again and use its result to identify whether the failure is on the console’s connection path.
- Check Activision’s Modern Warfare II support hub for current known issues or relevant support information.
- Contact your ISP for help with router configuration, firmware, or a connection problem that persists across devices.
Official troubleshooting guidance provides steps to try, not measured success rates or evidence that any single change works for every PS5 setup.
