If Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (MWIII, often called MW3) keeps crashing on an Xbox Series X or Series S, start by restarting the game and checking for a console update. Then work through ventilation, cache and network checks before escalating to Activision or Xbox Support. These are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes. Activision says Xbox crashes commonly happen in a public Multiplayer lobby before a match or just after one ends.
Try these eight checks in order
1. Restart MWIII
If the game crashes back to the Xbox dashboard, launch it again. If it freezes instead, quit and close the app before restarting it. Activision says a console reboot may sometimes be needed if the game remains frozen; it does not promise that restarting will prevent another crash.
2. Check for an Xbox system update
- Press the Xbox button and open Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates.
- Install any available console update and follow the on-screen prompts.
- After the update, try MWIII again.
Activision describes an up-to-date Xbox as the best way to avoid crashes and freezes.
3. Check the console’s ventilation
Place the Xbox in a cool, well-ventilated location and make sure its vents are not obstructed. Activision recommends good ventilation; its guidance does not establish that a particular stand, fan or cooling accessory will fix MWIII crashes.

4. Follow Xbox Support’s current cache-clearing instructions
Activision recommends clearing the Xbox cache and links to instructions, but its MWIII crash guide does not give the procedure. The available Xbox Support information does not establish a Series X|S-specific method here. Use current Xbox Support instructions for your console, rather than applying a button sequence or procedure meant for another Xbox model.
5. Clear the alternate MAC address
Activision’s menu path is Xbox button > Settings > Network > Network settings > Advanced settings > Alternate MAC Address > Clear > Restart. Menu wording can vary with the Xbox interface version. Once the console restarts, test the game again.

6. Check Activision’s known-issues tracker
Activision’s MWIII known-issues tracker lists identified or reported problems under investigation or scheduled for fixes. The list was marked updated August 7, 2026, and did not include a general Xbox-crashing issue at that time. It is a dated snapshot: an absent listing does not prove the cause is unique to your console, or that the issue is resolved.
7. Report an unlisted MWIII problem
If the tracker does not cover what you are experiencing, use the MWIII Bug Report form linked from the tracker. Reporting the issue does not guarantee a response or a specific fix date.

8. Escalate persistent console or installation trouble
If the Xbox is up to date and crashes continue, Activision directs players to Xbox Support. For disc copies, check that the disc itself is not damaged.
If you suspect a damaged or incomplete installation, reinstalling is a higher-effort option—not a crash fix promised by Activision. Its setup guide says MWIII is now a standalone title and explains installation routes, including through the Xbox library: MWIII installation and setup. The guide was marked updated June 30, 2026.

What to note before you contact support
Record when the crash happens—for example, while waiting in a public Multiplayer lobby, immediately after a match, or during another activity—and whether the game returned to the dashboard or froze. Include the steps you have already tried when contacting support. This gives the relevant support team a clearer description without assuming every crash has the same cause.

Activision identifies public Multiplayer lobbies before a match and the moments just after a match as common times for Xbox crashes. That is useful context when describing the problem, but it does not identify a single cause or establish that crashes at other times are unrelated to MWIII.
