Check the selected color and display configuration for its current price and stock.
How much does the ModRetro Chromatic cost?
ModRetro’s Chromatic collection page lists bundles starting at $199.99 USD. The starting figure does not establish the price or availability of every color or display option; confirm those details on the listing for the configuration you want.
At the July 10, 2025 relaunch, Engadget reported prices of $200 for the standard model and $300 for the Sapphire Glass model. Those are historical launch prices, not a current price list. ModRetro’s live product page is the better reference for a purchase today.
What games does it play?
The Chromatic accepts original Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges, as well as ModRetro Chromatic cartridges. ModRetro describes it as “Fully compatible with original Game Boy®, Game Boy Color® and ModRetro Chromatic Cartridges.” Engadget’s relaunch coverage likewise reported that cartridges are required: the console does not provide a downloadable library in place of physical games.

What comes in the bundle?
ModRetro’s Chromatic + Tetris Bundle listing says each Chromatic comes with Tetris for Chromatic. The listed box contents are:
- Chromatic handheld console

How does it compare with other handhelds?
The Chromatic’s defining trade-off is focus: it is built around Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges, rather than broad support for multiple handheld generations or a digital game library. Engadget contrasted its Game Boy and Game Boy Color scope with the Analogue Pocket’s Game Boy Advance support. That is a limited comparison of supported systems, not a complete head-to-head assessment of features or performance.
Before buying, consider whether you want a dedicated device for physical Game Boy-era games, whether you already own compatible cartridges, and whether the current glass and color options suit your budget. If you want to play beyond the Game Boy and Game Boy Color catalog, check the supported systems of any alternative handheld carefully.
What was announced at the 2025 relaunch?
Engadget reported on July 10, 2025, that the relaunch brought new colors, a Sapphire Glass display option, streaming to Discord, Mac or PC, and a firmware tool for updating games. Its report also gave a relaunch-era price of $40 for new games. Treat those figures as dated reporting rather than a promise about current game prices or product availability.
ModRetro founder Palmer Luckey has described plans for physical re-releases and remasters of classic Game Boy titles, new indie-developed games and previously canceled Game Boy projects. Those are stated plans; confirm each game’s release separately rather than assuming all announced projects are available.
ModRetro’s official collection page states that Nintendo is not affiliated with, sponsoring, approving or endorsing ModRetro. The compatibility and hardware descriptions above come from the manufacturer unless otherwise identified.
