Mojang replaced the one-summer-update pattern with several free Minecraft game drops a year, while separating game releases from its two-show Minecraft Live schedule.

Mojang’s plan is to release multiple free Minecraft game drops throughout the year instead of relying on one large summer update. The drops can vary in size; Mojang has not promised a fixed monthly schedule or a set number for every year. They arrive through game updates, and current official guidance says Java and Bedrock usually receive them on the same day.

What changed in Minecraft’s update schedule?

In its September 8, 2024 development roadmap, Mojang said it would replace the past pattern of one free summer update with “a number of free game drops throughout the year.” The company said the drops would vary in size. In its current update guidance, Mojang describes new features arriving several times a year, free, through updates to Minecraft. Mojang’s 2024 roadmap and its official update timeline do not establish a fixed monthly release calendar or guarantee the same number of drops each year.

Game drops are not a paid expansion or a separate purchase for players who already own Minecraft: Mojang says players get them by updating the game. Its timeline says the game-drop format began in 2023 with Bats and Pots.

How game drops differ from Minecraft Live

Mojang also announced a change to Minecraft Live, the show where it shares news about the game. The 2024 roadmap said Minecraft Live would shift to two more focused broadcasts each year, and that the mob vote was being retired. In a March 2025 follow-up, Mojang said it planned to share its plans more regularly. A September 2025 notice described the two shows as a way to cover features in multiple game drops. Those broadcasts are news events, not the updates themselves, and their schedule does not set a drop-by-drop release timetable. Mojang’s March 2025 announcement and its September 2025 notice explain the follow-up.

What Mojang said it was working on

The 2024 roadmap included platform and multiplayer plans, but did not give release dates for them:

  • Native PlayStation 5 version: Mojang said it was working on a native PS5 version. That wording described work underway at the time of the announcement, not a release date or a guarantee about when it would ship.
  • Multiplayer improvements: Mojang said it would explore ways to improve multiplayer and make it easier to find and connect with friends. “Explore” does not mean those changes were confirmed for a particular update.

These are best read as separate roadmap commitments with different levels of certainty: Mojang said it was working on the PS5 version, while multiplayer improvements were an area it planned to explore. The roadmap does not attach dates to either item.

What this means for Java and Bedrock players

As of October 8, 2026, Mojang’s official update timeline says Java and Bedrock generally receive game drops on the same day. It names Vibrant Visuals as an exception: the feature released for Bedrock Edition in June 2025, while Mojang’s timeline said it was still working on bringing it to Java. This platform-specific status can change; the official timeline is the source for the status checked on that date.

How player feedback fits into the plan

Mojang says community suggestions can shape both new additions and revisions to existing ideas. In its roadmap, the studio credited a community member’s suggestion for cherry groves and feedback-site suggestions for wolf variations. Mojang also said player feedback influenced the armadillo’s visual design and led to stronger wolf armor. These examples show that feedback can inform development, but they do not guarantee that a suggestion will be added or identify which future drop will include a feature. Mojang’s roadmap describes these examples.
