What mono-2.0.dll is
Mono is an open-source implementation of the .NET and Common Language Infrastructure runtime. Games, older Windows applications, embedded C# compilers, and native programs that embed Mono may include its native runtime files in their own installation directory.
mono-2.0.dll is therefore normally an application-private library. It is not a standard Windows component and should not normally be copied to:
C:\Windows\System32
or:
C:\Windows\SysWOW64
The Windows DLL loader usually searches the application directory before system directories. If a game expects mono-2.0.dll beside its executable, putting a different copy in a Windows folder can create version conflicts without fixing the original installation.
The 2.0 portion of the name generally identifies a Mono ABI or runtime-library family. It does not prove that the file came from the historical Mono 2.0 release. The filename alone also does not identify one universal version, size, publisher, or binary.

libmonosgen-2.0.dll |

mono.dll |
A runtime filename used by some applications or Unity generations |
mono-2.0-bdwgc.dll |
A Unity-related Mono runtime filename |
mono-2.0-sgen.dll |

These files are not automatically interchangeable. Renaming libmonosgen-2.0.dll to mono-2.0.dll does not change its exports, architecture, dependencies, or expected directory layout.
Identify the program that owns the file
Before repairing Windows or downloading a runtime, locate the application that is requesting mono-2.0.dll.
Look at the complete error message. Some programs show the executable path, while others only show the DLL name. If the message gives a path, note the folder containing the requesting executable. That folder is more useful than the Windows directory.

Replace the example path with the actual installation folder. For example:
where /r "D:\Games\ExampleGame" mono-2.0.dll
Possible results include:
- A path beside the game executable, indicating an application-private runtime.
- A path inside a
Mono,Runtime,Managed,Data, or similar subfolder. - No result, indicating that the file is missing from that installation directory.
- Multiple results, which may indicate several bundled applications or different runtime copies.
Do not select a copy merely because it is found first. A copy from another game may have different dependencies or a different architecture.
You can inspect a suspected file with PowerShell:
Get-Item "C:\Path\To\mono-2.0.dll" |
Format-List FullName,Length,CreationTime,LastWriteTime
To calculate its SHA-256 hash:
Get-FileHash "C:\Path\To\mono-2.0.dll" -Algorithm SHA256
To view its Authenticode signature:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "C:\Path\To\mono-2.0.dll"
A missing signature does not automatically prove that a file is malicious. Many private runtime files are not signed in a way that Windows displays as trusted. The important questions are whether the file came from the application’s trusted installer, whether it belongs in that application’s folder, and whether the application’s launcher accepts it.
Fix 1: Verify or repair the game files
For a game, file verification is the safest first repair because it restores the runtime bundle selected by the game publisher.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Start the game from Steam.
Steam may replace missing or damaged files, including files that are not obvious from the game’s main folder.

If the verification reports that files could not be restored, close Steam completely and reopen it as administrator for a test. Right-click the Steam shortcut, select Run as administrator, and repeat the verification. Do not leave elevated permissions enabled permanently unless the game specifically requires them.
Epic Games Launcher
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the game.
- Select the three dots beside the game title.
- Select Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for verification to complete.
- Launch the game again.
Another game launcher
Look for an option named Verify, Repair, Scan and repair, Validate, or Check files. It may be inside the game’s menu, the launcher settings, or a gear icon beside the game.
If the launcher has a separate Repair option, use that before uninstalling the game. A repair normally preserves installed content and personal settings, although backing up saves and configuration files is prudent.
How to tell whether verification worked
The repair succeeded if:
- The game starts normally.
- The missing-file message no longer appears.
- The launcher reports that files were restored.
- The game reaches its main menu without a new runtime error.
If the same message returns immediately, check antivirus quarantine before repeating the verification. Antivirus software may remove the restored file again.
Fix 2: Repair the application from Windows
Some desktop programs expose a repair option through Windows.
Windows 11 and Windows 10 Settings
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in some Windows 10 builds.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three dots beside it.
- Select Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
The repair option is not available for every program. If it is missing, use the application’s original installer.

Windowskey and typeControl Panel. - Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected program.
- Select Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
A repair is useful when the application registration or installation metadata is damaged but the main program files remain present.
Fix 3: Reinstall the affected game or application
Reinstalling is the definitive repair when the private Mono bundle is incomplete, corrupted, or from the wrong release.
Before uninstalling, check whether the program stores saves or settings inside its installation folder. Copy personal saves to another folder if the game does not synchronize them through its launcher.
Then:
- Uninstall the program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download or reinstall it from the official vendor, game launcher, or original installation media.
- Install it to the default location first.
- Start the application before adding modifications, plugins, or custom files.
- Apply updates through the program’s normal launcher.
If the program still fails, install it into a different folder or drive. A fresh location can distinguish a damaged installation directory from a system-wide dependency problem.
Do not copy mono-2.0.dll from another program into the new installation. The correct package may require a particular garbage collector, export set, architecture, configuration file, or group of neighboring native libraries.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine a bundled runtime after an update, modification, or change in detection rules.
To inspect Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the affected game or
mono-2.0.dll. - Open the event to view its details.
Restore the file only when all of these conditions are true:
- The application came from a trusted vendor or launcher.
- The file belongs in that application’s installation directory.
- You recognize the detection and have no other malware warning.
- A fresh scan does not identify a broader infection.
If the event is uncertain, do not restore the binary. Uninstall and reinstall the application from its official source instead.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If Windows Security repeatedly removes the file, reinstalling it again will not solve the cause. Update Windows Security, run a full scan, check for suspicious modifications or unofficial plugins, and investigate whether the program itself has been compromised.
Temporarily exclude a trusted game folder
Only do this for a trusted installation, and remove the exclusion after testing.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Manage settings under Virus & threat protection settings.
- Scroll to Exclusions.
- Select Add or remove exclusions.
- Select Add an exclusion.
- Select Folder.
- Choose the game’s installation folder.
- Run the launcher’s file verification again.
- Remove the exclusion after confirming the cause.
Do not exclude the entire Windows drive or a broad downloads folder.
Fix 5: Check the application’s bundled redistributables
Many games include installers in folders named:
_CommonRedist
Redist
Redistributables
Support
Installers
To inspect them:
- Open the game launcher.
- Open the game’s installation folder using Browse local files, Open installation folder, or a similar command.
- Look for
_CommonRedistorRedist. - Open subfolders for Visual C++, DirectX, or other listed components.
- Run the supplied installer.
- Choose Repair when the installer offers it.
- Restart the computer.
- Verify the game files again.
Install only packages supplied with the trusted application or obtained from the official component vendor. A DirectX installer will not normally create mono-2.0.dll, but a game may require both DirectX and Mono.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 6: Match the application architecture
A 32-bit process needs a 32-bit Mono runtime. A 64-bit process needs a 64-bit runtime. A 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit programs, so the operating system architecture does not by itself answer this question.
Use these clues:
- A launcher may label the installation
x86,win32, orx64. - The application’s documentation may specify its architecture.
- A 32-bit game often uses a separate x86 installation or executable.
- A developer can inspect the executable with Visual Studio tools such as
dumpbin. - A developer can inspect the DLL with:
dumpbin /headers "C:\Path\To\mono-2.0.dll"
Look for the PE machine type reported by the tool.
The safest repair is to restore the file from the same application build and the same launcher. Do not replace a 32-bit file with a 64-bit file, or vice versa.
Fix 7: Repair a missing dependency
This wording is important:
The specified module could not be found.
Windows may display that message when mono-2.0.dll exists but another library required by it is missing.

Check the complete error text for names such as:
VCRUNTIME140.dll
MSVCP140.dll
MSVCR120.dll
If the message names a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, install or repair the matching package from Microsoft’s Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page.
Choose the architecture required by the application:
- Use the x86 package for a 32-bit application.
- Use the x64 package for a 64-bit application.
- A 64-bit version of Windows may need both packages for different applications.
Installing Visual C++ does not create mono-2.0.dll. It helps only when the Mono runtime or another application component depends on the missing C or C++ runtime.
For developers, inspect the dependency list with:
dumpbin /dependents "C:\Path\To\mono-2.0.dll"
Repair the named dependency through the application installer or its official Microsoft package. Do not download individual dependency DLLs from random websites.
Fix 8: Install standalone Mono only when the program requires it
Standalone Mono is appropriate when you are launching a Mono-based program directly and its documentation or installer expects Mono to be installed on Windows.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The official Mono Windows distribution provides separate 32-bit and 64-bit installers. The current stable page lists the 6.12.0.206 Windows packages, including:
mono-6.12.0.206-gtksharp-2.12.45-win32-0.msi
mono-6.12.0.206-x64-0.msi
The installation process is:
- Obtain the matching installer from the official Mono distribution.
- Run the installer.
- Select the installation options required by the application.
- Complete setup.
- Open the generated Mono command prompt if the application requires Mono tools.
- Start the application again.
Do not assume that the latest standalone Mono installer contains the exact historical filename mono-2.0.dll. An older program may require a specific ABI, runtime layout, garbage collector, or export set. In that situation, the application’s own installer or a matching official archived build is more authoritative than a generic current installation.
If a game already bundles Mono, installing standalone Mono usually is not the correct first repair. The game may deliberately load its private runtime from its own directory.
Fix 9: Check Windows Features only for a separate .NET requirement
mono-2.0.dll is not the same thing as Microsoft .NET Framework. Enabling Windows Features will not normally create this file.
Check Windows Features only if the application separately reports a missing .NET Framework component.
- Press
Windowskey plusR. - Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Look for .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0) or .NET Framework 4.8 Advanced Services.
- Enable only the feature required by the application.
- Select OK.
- Allow Windows to download or apply the component.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Start the application again.
The 2.0 in mono-2.0.dll does not mean that enabling Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 will supply the file. Mono and .NET Framework are related runtime technologies, but they are separate installations.
Fix 10: Do not register this file with Regsvr32
Do not run:
regsvr32 mono-2.0.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A native Mono runtime library is not normally a COM component. Registering it will not repair a missing private runtime and may produce an error saying that the entry point was not found.
If a separate application explicitly instructs you to register a COM component, follow that application’s documentation and use its exact DLL path. That is a different situation from repairing mono-2.0.dll.

Use these commands when Windows itself shows broader damage, several Windows components fail, or other system files are also corrupted. They are not the primary repair for an application-private Mono file.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the affected application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component store used by System File Checker. See Microsoft’s System File Checker and DISM instructions.
If SFC reports that it repaired files but the game still reports missing mono-2.0.dll, that result does not prove the Mono file was repaired. Windows normally does not own or service this third-party library.
If you want to avoid repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows-component problems; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is done by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the game that owns mono-2.0.dll remains the definitive fix for an application-private file.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fix 12: Update or reinstall drivers only for a separate driver failure
A graphics, chipset, audio, or storage driver is not a normal cause of a missing Mono runtime. Consider driver repair only when the game also reports a graphics-driver failure, crashes after opening, or names a driver DLL.
To check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters for graphics hardware.
- Expand another relevant category, such as Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider, date, and version.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
For a clean reinstall, obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer, uninstall the device only when the manufacturer’s instructions require it, restart Windows, and install the correct driver for the hardware and operating system.
Updating drivers will not normally restore mono-2.0.dll. If you want to avoid hunting through hardware pages and guessing which of many drivers is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver problems; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is done by the full version.
Fix 13: Consider System Restore only after application repair
System Restore is appropriate when the problem began immediately after a recent installation, update, or system change and normal game repair has failed.

Unity applications
Unity has used several Mono filenames across different generations and scripting backends. A Unity installation may contain mono.dll or mono-2.0-bdwgc.dll rather than literal mono-2.0.dll.
Do not rename a Unity runtime file to satisfy an error for mono-2.0.dll. Verify the Unity-based game, restore its own files, and use the runtime files packaged with that specific build.
The file returns after being restored
If the file disappears again, investigate:
- Antivirus quarantine.
- Failed launcher updates.
- Disk errors.
- Unofficial modifications or plugins.
- Malware.
- Permissions on the game directory.
- A storage drive that is becoming unreliable.
Repeatedly copying the same DLL does not solve a process that keeps removing or corrupting it.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Do not download mono-2.0.dll from a generic DLL download website.
A downloaded file can be:
- Malware or a modified binary.
- The wrong architecture.
- From a different Mono release.
- Missing required neighboring runtime files.
- Incompatible with the calling application.
- A renamed copy of another Mono library.
- Unable to fix the actual cause, such as a damaged launcher installation.
Never place a random DLL in System32 or SysWOW64. Use the game’s file verification, its official installer, its bundled redistributables, or the official Mono distribution when standalone Mono is genuinely required.
Prevention after the repair
Once the application starts:
- Keep the game launcher and application updated normally.
- Avoid deleting unknown files from the game directory during disk cleanup.
- Install mods and plugins only from sources you trust.
- Keep a backup of saves and important configuration files.
- Do not replace runtime files manually after updates.
- If antivirus quarantines a trusted file, record the event before restoring or reinstalling.
- Keep enough free space for launchers to complete updates.
- Use the launcher’s verification feature after interrupted updates or failed repairs.
- Avoid running internal helper executables directly.
- Preserve the complete runtime folder when moving a portable application.
Persistent-failure checklist
If the error remains, collect these details before trying another repair:
- The exact wording of the error.
- The full path of the requesting executable.
- The folder where the application expects
mono-2.0.dll. - Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the file exists after verification.
- Whether Windows Security quarantined it.
- Any additional DLL named by the error.
- Whether a fresh installation in another folder behaves differently.
- Whether other Windows programs show unrelated missing-file errors.
Use the following commands only with paths you have verified:
where /r "C:\Path\To\The\Program" mono-2.0.dll
Get-Item "C:\Path\To\mono-2.0.dll" |
Format-List FullName,Length,CreationTime,LastWriteTime
Get-FileHash "C:\Path\To\mono-2.0.dll" -Algorithm SHA256
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "C:\Path\To\mono-2.0.dll"
For developer-side dependency analysis:
dumpbin /dependents "C:\Path\To\mono-2.0.dll"
The most useful escalation information is the owning application, its installation path, the process architecture, and the first dependency that fails to load. Those details are more valuable than a DLL copied from an unrelated computer.
Frequently asked questions
Is mono-2.0.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is normally a native Mono runtime library supplied by the application that uses it. It should not normally be installed into System32 or SysWOW64.
Should I install .NET Framework?
Only if the application separately requires Microsoft .NET Framework. Installing .NET Framework does not normally create mono-2.0.dll.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?
Only when the error names a Visual C++ dependency, such as VCRUNTIME140.dll, or dependency analysis confirms that one is missing. Visual C++ does not create the Mono DLL itself.
Should I install DirectX?
Install or repair DirectX only when the game requires it or reports a DirectX error. DirectX is not a replacement for Mono.
Can I copy the file from another game?
No. The copied file may have the wrong architecture, ABI, dependencies, or runtime configuration. Restore the file from the same application build.
Can I rename libmonosgen-2.0.dll?
No. Renaming does not make one Mono runtime binary compatible with another application.
Why does the error say “The specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
That message can refer to a dependency required by mono-2.0.dll. Check the complete error, the game’s bundled redistributables, and any named Visual C++ runtime.
Why does a current Mono installer not fix an old game?
An older application may require a specific historical runtime filename, ABI, export set, garbage collector, or folder layout. The application’s own installer or a matching official archived build may be required.
Recommended Free Tools
Is regsvr32 required?
No. mono-2.0.dll is not normally a COM component and should not be registered with regsvr32.
What is the safest first step?
Identify the application that requested the file, then use its launcher verification, Windows repair option, or official installer. For a game, file verification is usually the quickest safe repair.
