mono-2.0-sgen.dll is a native Windows library from the Mono runtime, and a missing or unloadable copy normally means the game or application that bundled Mono is incomplete, mismatched, or blocked. Repair the program that tried to load mono-2.0-sgen.dll first; do not copy a random replacement into System32 or register it with regsvr32.
What this file actually does
Mono is an open-source implementation of the .NET and Common Language Infrastructure runtime. Games and applications use it to execute managed code, load plugins, run scripts, or embed C# functionality inside a native Windows program.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The sgen part of the name identifies Mono’s SGen generational garbage collector. It helps manage memory used by managed code. The 2.0 portion is part of Mono’s native runtime and library naming. It does not prove that the installed Mono release is version 2.0.
mono-2.0-sgen.dll is not a Windows component. It is not normally owned by Windows, Microsoft .NET, DirectX, or the graphics driver. Mono’s standard Windows installation uses its own directories, while games and editors may place a private copy beside their executable.

The filename alone cannot identify the exact program that installed it. Common sources include:
- A direct Mono for Windows installation.
- A Godot 3 Mono editor or exported project.
- A Unity-based game or application.
- FiveM, FXServer, or another server distribution.
- A custom C++ application embedding Mono.
- A game that includes Mono as private middleware.
There is no universal file size, checksum, internal version, or single correct copy. Different applications may redistribute different Mono builds, architectures, managed libraries, and configuration files.
The official Mono download page lists Mono 6.12.0.206 as the latest original Mono release and provides separate Windows packages for 32-bit and 64-bit systems. That release is suitable for a direct Mono installation only when the application expects a compatible standalone Mono runtime. It is not automatically a replacement for a private runtime bundled with an older game.

First, identify the program that owns the error
The safest repair depends on which program displayed the message. A standalone Mono installation, a Unity game, a Godot editor, and a FiveM server may all use a file with the same name but require different surrounding files.
Write down the executable or shortcut that produced the error. Look at:
- The title bar of the error dialog.
- The shortcut’s Target field.
- The folder containing the executable.
- The launcher or game name shown immediately before the error.
- Any crash report or log file created at the same time.
To inspect a shortcut:
- Right-click the game or application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Target field on the Shortcut tab.
- Select Open File Location if the button is available.
- Note the folder containing the executable.
If the error appears while launching a game through Steam, Epic Games Launcher, or another launcher, repair that game through the launcher. If it appears when opening mono.exe, monow.exe, or a Mono development tool, use the official Mono installer that matches the application architecture.
Do not assume that the newest standalone Mono package will fix a game. A bundled game runtime may require a precise combination of native DLLs, managed assemblies, configuration files, and plugins.
Fix 1: verify or repair the affected game
This is the most likely solution when only one game refuses to start.
A game update, incomplete extraction, failed patch, manual cleanup, or antivirus quarantine can remove mono-2.0-sgen.dll or one of the files that must accompany it. A launcher verification process restores the game’s original files and is safer than downloading an individual DLL.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Restart Steam.
- Launch the game again.
If the game still fails:
- Close the game and Steam.
- Restart Windows.
- Run verification again.
- Check whether the game has a separate launcher or bundled prerequisite installer.
- If necessary, uninstall and reinstall the game from Steam.
The verification process may replace modified files. If you use mods, overlays, or custom launchers, temporarily remove or disable them before testing.
Epic Games Launcher
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the affected game.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the game.
- Select Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait until verification completes.
- Start the game from the launcher.
If verification reports no problems but the error remains, use the game’s own repair option if it has one. Otherwise, reinstall the game. A clean reinstall is especially appropriate when the installation was interrupted or the game was moved manually between drives.

Look for buttons named:
- Repair
- Verify
- Scan and repair
- Validate
- Check files
- Reinstall
- Update
For a portable game, extract the complete archive again into a new folder. Do not copy only mono-2.0-sgen.dll from another game. The runtime may need matching managed class libraries, configuration files, and additional native dependencies.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded when the game starts without the missing-DLL message and reaches its normal menu or login screen. If the same message returns immediately, inspect Windows Security and continue with the architecture and dependency checks below.
Fix 2: repair a direct Mono installation
Use this step when the failing program directly uses Mono rather than bundling its own runtime.
Download Mono only from the official Mono project’s stable download page or its official archive. The Windows packages listed for the current original Mono release include:

- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
To repair a direct installation:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Mono.
- If an uninstall or repair option is available, use Modify, Repair, or the original installer.
- If repair is unavailable, uninstall Mono.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct official Mono package.
- Restart Windows again.
- Launch the program that previously failed.
If the program is old, its documentation may require an older Mono package. The latest standalone release is not guaranteed to work with every embedded or custom application.
Do not install standalone Mono over a game’s private runtime unless the game developer specifically instructs you to do so. The game may ignore the system installation entirely.
Fix 3: restore the complete matching runtime
Replacing only mono-2.0-sgen.dll can create a second problem. Mono runtimes use groups of files that must agree with one another, including native libraries, managed assemblies such as mscorlib.dll, configuration files, and application-specific components.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThis matters particularly for:
- Godot 3 Mono projects.
- Custom applications embedding Mono.
- Older Unity games.
- FiveM or FXServer distributions.
- Applications copied from another computer.
- Games modified with plugins or unofficial patches.
Godot Mono builds require the Mono-enabled editor and matching export components. A runtime from one Godot release may not work with managed libraries from another. Similar mismatches can occur in a custom Mono application when one native DLL is replaced independently.
Restore the complete bundle by using one of these methods:
- Use the launcher’s verification feature.
- Reinstall the matching editor or game.
- Reinstall the correct export templates.
- Restore the application from a known-good backup.
- Rebuild the application using one consistent Mono release.
- Remove manually copied runtime files and perform a clean official installation.
Avoid combining mono-2.0-sgen.dll from one program with mscorlib.dll or other Mono files from another program.
mono-2.0-bdwgc.dll is not a safe substitute. It represents a different Mono garbage-collector configuration. Renaming it to mono-2.0-sgen.dll does not make it equivalent.

A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL. Windows can run 32-bit applications on 64-bit Windows, so the operating system’s architecture does not tell you which runtime the game needs.
A 32-bit game may require a 32-bit Mono runtime even on a 64-bit Windows installation. Likewise, a 64-bit game needs a 64-bit runtime.
Check the game’s documentation or installation folder for clues such as:
x86win3232-bitx64win6464-bit
You can also inspect the executable with a trusted development tool, although the simplest repair is usually to use the game’s own installer or launcher verification process.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Do not use System32 and SysWOW64 as a manual placement strategy. Their names are confusing on 64-bit Windows, and they are not interchangeable application runtime folders. Mono’s own Windows guidance does not treat those directories as the normal destination for its runtime DLLs.
The application directory is normally the correct location because Windows commonly searches there before other locations. Microsoft documents the DLL search process in its Dynamic-Link Library Search Order guidance.
If you find multiple copies, do not delete them just because their names match. Each copy may belong to a different application and architecture.
Fix 5: repair a missing dependency
The message “specified module could not be found” does not always mean that mono-2.0-sgen.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named file but failed to load one of its dependencies.

Prerequisites
If the game includes separate x86 and x64 redistributable installers, install the architecture required by the game. A 32-bit game generally needs the x86 Visual C++ package, even on 64-bit Windows.
Microsoft provides the official latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable packages. Direct Microsoft download links are also available for the latest x86 package and latest x64 package.
To repair the installed package:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Search for Microsoft Visual C++.
- Find the relevant x86 or x64 entry.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Select Modify.
- Choose Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the game again.
If the error remains, install the matching package from Microsoft rather than copying individual runtime DLLs from another computer.
DirectX and .NET are not general fixes for mono-2.0-sgen.dll. Install or repair them only when the game separately reports a missing DirectX component, .NET component, or other named prerequisite.
Fix 6: check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a runtime file after an update or after a false detection. This is more likely when the game folder contains modified files, unofficial plugins, or a newly updated executable.
Check the quarantine history before reinstalling the game:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry referring to the game folder or
mono-2.0-sgen.dll. - Record the detection name and file path.
Do not restore the file immediately. First confirm:
- The file came from the game’s official installer or launcher.
- The path belongs to the expected game directory.
- The game developer or publisher recognizes the file.
- The installation was not modified by an unknown launcher or patch.
- The file matches a trusted installation source.
If the file is confirmed safe, use the Windows Security action that allows or restores it, then verify the game files again. If Windows Security detects it again, leave it quarantined and contact the game vendor. Microsoft explains the risks of restoring uncertain files in its Protection History guidance.
Do not permanently exclude a broad folder such as C:\Program Files or the entire Downloads folder. If a trusted vendor confirms a false positive, use the narrowest possible exclusion and remove it if the game is later reinstalled.
Fix 7: run the game as administrator only when needed
Permissions are not the usual cause of a missing Mono DLL, but they can matter when the game cannot read its own installation directory or create required configuration files.
To test administrator access:
- Right-click the game executable or shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply.
- Select OK.
- Launch the game.
If this solves the issue, the better long-term fix is to correct the installation permissions or reinstall the game into a normal user-accessible location. Running every game permanently as administrator increases its access to the system and should not be used as a substitute for repairing damaged files.
Fix 8: distinguish a startup error from a crash
A startup message such as “mono-2.0-sgen.dll is missing” is a file or dependency problem. A crash report that contains a line such as:
mono-2.0-sgen.dll+43439E
is a different situation.
A module named in a crash stack is not automatically the cause. It may be the location where the application, plugin, debugger, overlay, or corrupted managed assembly finally failed.
Possible causes include:
- A Mono runtime bug.
- A damaged save, project, or managed assembly.
- An incompatible mod or plugin.
- Overlay software.
- A debugger attached to the process.
- Application code corrupting memory.
- A mismatched runtime bundle.
- A failed game update.
For a crash rather than a missing-file message:
- Update the game or application.
- Verify its files through the launcher.
- Disable mods and custom plugins.
- Disable overlays from Steam, Discord, recording software, and graphics utilities.
- Temporarily remove debugging or injection tools.
- Test a new save or empty project if the application supports it.
- Reinstall the complete application if the crash continues.
- Preserve the crash log rather than replacing the DLL at random.
When contacting the vendor, include:
- The exact application name.
- The application version.
- The Windows version and build.
- Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The complete crash signature and offset.
- The exact action that triggers the crash.
- Whether disabling mods or overlays changed the result.
- The launcher verification result.
- Recent driver, antivirus, or application changes.
Fix 9: use Windows repair tools only for broader corruption
SFC and DISM normally repair Windows-owned components. They do not usually restore a third-party Mono DLL inside a game directory.
Use them when:
- Several unrelated Windows applications fail.
- Windows features are also malfunctioning.
- The issue began after broader system corruption.
- Microsoft components report missing or damaged files.
- The problem is not limited to one game or application.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete and test the affected program.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker guidance.
If the commands report that Windows repaired files but the game still shows the same Mono error, return to the game launcher and repair the game. SFC and DISM are not a substitute for restoring a private game runtime.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting circular. If you prefer a guided scan that identifies system problems before you decide whether to repair them, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling the affected game remains the definitive fix when its private Mono files are damaged.

Do not enable Windows features merely because a Mono DLL is missing. Mono is not the same as Microsoft .NET Framework, and enabling an unrelated feature will not restore mono-2.0-sgen.dll.
Use Windows Features only when the application specifically says it needs an older .NET Framework component:
- Press

- Press Enter.
- Select .NET Framework 3.5, including the older .NET Framework components, if the application explicitly requires it.
- Select OK.
- Allow Windows to download or install the requested component.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
If the application reports a different .NET version, install the version specified by the application vendor. Do not replace Mono with .NET or assume that .NET repair will fix a native Mono runtime.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 11: update or roll back drivers only for repeatable runtime crashes
A graphics, audio, capture, or overlay driver can contribute to a crash that happens inside Mono, but driver work is low priority for a simple missing-DLL message.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Driver troubleshooting is appropriate when:
- The crash began immediately after a driver update.
- The game crashes only during graphics or audio initialization.
- Multiple games began crashing after the same driver change.
- The crash involves an overlay, capture device, or graphics utility.
- Verification and complete application repair did not help.
To use Device Manager:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
- If rollback is unavailable, select Uninstall Device.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current driver from the hardware manufacturer if Windows does not reinstall it automatically.
Microsoft documents these options in its Device Manager driver guidance.
Driver hunting can involve checking many devices and comparing versions manually. Outbyte Driver Updater can use its free scan to show which drivers it identifies as outdated; the full version performs the driver installation, but it is not required when the Mono file belongs to a specific game.
Fix 12: use System Restore after application repair fails
System Restore is a later option, not the first fix for a private game DLL. Consider it when the failure began immediately after installing software, changing drivers, or applying a system change and the previous repair steps did not help.
To open System Restore:
- Press
Win+R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the programs and drivers that will be changed.
- Select Next.
- Select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally does not remove personal documents, but it can roll back installed applications, drivers, and system settings. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guidance.

Find the copy Windows or the application is using
If you want to identify existing copies without modifying anything, open Command Prompt and run:
where /r "%ProgramFiles%\Mono" mono-2.0-sgen.dll
where /r "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Mono" mono-2.0-sgen.dll
To search a particular game directory, use its actual path:
where /r "C:\Games\ExampleGame" mono-2.0-sgen.dll
A result shows where a copy exists. It does not prove that the copy is correct for the failing application.
To inspect file metadata in PowerShell:
Get-Item "C:\path\to\mono-2.0-sgen.dll" |
Select-Object FullName, Length,
@{Name="FileVersion";Expression={$_.VersionInfo.FileVersion}},
@{Name="ProductVersion";Expression={$_.VersionInfo.ProductVersion}},
@{Name="Company";Expression={$_.VersionInfo.CompanyName}}
No single file version, size, or checksum applies to every mono-2.0-sgen.dll. Metadata can help compare two files from the same trusted installation, but it cannot establish that a DLL downloaded elsewhere is suitable.

If Visual Studio is installed, you can inspect native dependencies with:
dumpbin /dependents "C:\path\to\mono-2.0-sgen.dll"
If dumpbin is not recognized, Visual Studio’s developer command prompt may be required. Dependency inspection is mainly useful for developers or advanced troubleshooting. Most players should repair the game and its bundled prerequisites instead.
What not to do
Do not download a random replacement DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, a wrong architecture, a wrong build, or a damaged file. Even a clean file with the correct name may not match the game’s managed libraries or other Mono components.

Do not copy it into System32
mono-2.0-sgen.dll is not a standard Windows system DLL. Copying it into C:\Windows\System32 or C:\Windows\SysWOW64 can make troubleshooting harder and may cause another application to load an incompatible copy.
Restore the file to the application directory through the application’s installer or launcher.
Do not rename another Mono DLL
Do not rename mono-2.0-bdwgc.dll to mono-2.0-sgen.dll. Different garbage-collector builds are not interchangeable by filename.
Do not register it with regsvr32
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general installer for runtime libraries. Running:
regsvr32 mono-2.0-sgen.dll
will not repair a missing Mono runtime and may produce another confusing error. Microsoft describes the command’s actual purpose in its regsvr32 documentation.
Frequently asked questions
Is mono-2.0-sgen.dll a Windows system file?
No. It belongs to the Mono runtime and is normally installed by Mono itself or bundled privately by a game or application.
Do I need to install Mono?
Only if the failing program directly requires a system Mono installation. A Unity game, Godot project, FiveM server, or other embedded application may ship its own runtime. Repair that program first.
Do I need Microsoft .NET?
Not automatically. Mono provides a .NET-compatible runtime, but a missing Mono DLL is not normally fixed by reinstalling Microsoft .NET. Follow the prerequisite message from the affected application.
Do I need DirectX?
Not for this file by itself. Repair DirectX only when the game separately reports a DirectX component problem.
