Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is worth playing if you want a story-driven, turn-based RPG built around collecting monsters and planning a party—not if you are looking for the real-time hunts of the mainline Monster Hunter games. Its approachable story and layered combat are balanced by familiar quest routines, repetition, and some grind.
What kind of game is Monster Hunter Stories 2?
This is a turn-based RPG spin-off set in the Monster Hunter world. You play a Rider who bonds with friendly monsters, called Monsties, and fights alongside them. That makes its central appeal party-building and tactical battles, rather than tracking and taking down monsters in the action-focused style of the main series.
Nintendo’s publisher-provided description sums up the premise as becoming a Rider and forming bonds with Monsties to fight alongside them. The story begins with Red’s grandchild and Ena, who carries an egg that could hatch into a destructive Rathalos. Nintendo’s Switch listing describes the game and its central setup.
Can you start with Stories 2?
Yes. You do not need to have played the first Stories game or a mainline Monster Hunter title to follow this one. Nintendo Life’s review of the European Switch version, published July 7, 2021, characterized the story as standalone-friendly and the tutorials as helpful for learning its systems. Returning fans may recognize characters and references, but prior series knowledge is not a prerequisite.

What do reviews praise—and criticize?
The clearest strength is the combination of turn-based combat and party construction. Building a team of Monsties gives the tactical battles room for planning and customization, and Nintendo Life praised the depth of both combat and party-building. Reviews collected by Metacritic also include praise for strategic combat and collecting, while noting that the story can feel light.
The main reservation is repetition. Nintendo Life found the quest structure familiar and progression grind-prone, recommending a measured pace rather than rushing through. Other review excerpts on Metacritic criticize repeated combat, long attack animations, repetitive exploration, or slower pacing. These are individual critics’ assessments, not a guarantee that every player will have the same experience.

Is the base game enough, or do you need DLC?
The base game is the core experience; Nintendo lists add-ons such as the Deluxe Kit as downloadable content and optional purchases. They are not presented as a requirement to enjoy the game. Prices and sale status change, so consult the current Nintendo listing for current add-on details.
How widely was it bought?
Capcom reported that lifetime sales surpassed two million units in a June 19, 2024 announcement, ahead of the game’s third anniversary. That is a dated milestone, not a current 2026 sales total.
