The best two-weapon setup in Monster Hunter Wilds depends on what you need to solve in a hunt—not on a universal ranking. You can bring two weapons and switch between them using your Seikret, so a useful secondary might cover a range or elevation problem, add a different kind of part pressure, or give you another element or status option. These seven pairings are role-based recommendations, not controlled damage comparisons.
Seven weapon combinations worth considering
Think of the first weapon as the one you expect to use most, and the second as an answer to a specific situation. The pairings below draw on weapon roles and published examples; the Mobalytics combination guide is based on beta playtests, so treat its suggestions as ideas and check current mechanics in-game.

1. Great Sword + Light Bowgun: committed melee and a ranged option
Use the Great Sword for deliberate openings and high-commitment attacks. Switch to Light Bowgun when distance, elevation, or access to a target makes sustained melee contact inconvenient. This is a contrast in roles, not evidence that one weapon deals more damage than the other.
2. Hammer + Sword & Shield: blunt pressure and flexible cutting access
Hammer gives you a head-focused blunt role; Sword & Shield adds a responsive, mobile option with convenient item use. Consider this if you want different kinds of part pressure and a flexible fallback rather than two weapons that ask you to hunt in the same way.

- Wild New Adventure – Monster Hunter Wilds follows the story of a special Research Commission investigating the Forbidden Lands. Fully voiced for the first time in the series, the hunter is joined in their journey by a colorful cast of characters, including a Palico partner, Guild-appointed Handler Alma, trusty smithy Gemma, and the mysterious child Nata. Together, the team ventures into an unexplored new frontier where surprises await around every corner.
- A Living World – The Forbidden Lands spans multiple biomes with dynamic identities, such as the Windward Plains and Scarlet Forest, where the ecosystems shift between vibrant seasons brimming with life, and unforgiving climates where monsters fight over limited resources. Changes in the landscape will impact the creatures that live there and push hunters to adapt as well.
- New Monsters and Wildlife – Monster Hunter Wilds features a variety of new creatures, ranging from herds of small species to large monsters – some of which roam the Forbidden Lands in packs. Every creature hunters encounter in the wild has carved out a special place in its habitat and possesses unique attacks and behaviors.
- Players can also now ride atop the Seikret, an agile new mount enabling hunters to traverse difficult terrain, perform actions like sharpening weapons on the move, and switch between two weapons while out on hunts!
- Evolved Hunting Action – The series’ acclaimed action-packed gameplay is back and more exciting than ever! Hunters can look forward to tracking down monsters with an array of new moves, special abilities, equipment, and more. The action also now flows seamlessly from cutscenes to gameplay, resulting in a new level of immersion.
3. Sword & Shield + Hunting Horn: mobile utility and team support
Sword & Shield brings fast, mobile play and item access, while Hunting Horn adds melody-based buffs. Mobalytics presents the combination as a utility pairing, but its guide is beta-based; it is an option to explore, not a verified current best.
4. Great Sword + status-focused Dual Blades: status setup and a wake-up hit
Mobalytics suggests using Dual Blades to apply status quickly and Great Sword for a wake-up hit. The guide’s beta caveat applies, so check current status mechanics in-game. In multiplayer, coordinate the wake-up rather than letting the team interrupt or dilute the planned hit.

- Hunt giant nature-infused bests – Survive their attacks, learn from their behaviors, and use your Karakuri and your weapons in combination to cut these creatures down to size.
- Craft your hunting grounds – You are the only one in Azuma able to wield the Karakuri technology.
- Hunt in a pack, or be a lone wolf – In WILD HEARTS you can face the Kemono alone or unite with up to two friends (or other players) to stalk and hunt your prey.
- Gear up to hunt, hunt to gear up – Create your character, then gather materials from each hunt and build an array of armor and weapons.
5. Two versions of your favored weapon with different elements
Carrying the same weapon type twice can preserve your familiar moveset while giving you a second elemental option. Developers have explicitly suggested preparing two of the same weapon type with different elemental properties and choosing between them strategically. Match the element to the particular monster and the information available for that hunt.
6. Two versions of your favored weapon with different status effects
This is another low-transition-cost choice: keep the weapon class you know and change the status plan. Mobalytics recommends same-type pairings as a way to stay focused while changing status or element, but that advice comes from a beta-based guide. Check the current weapon and status details before building around it.

- Enter the stadium and take part of one of the biggest competitions across 34 sports: from swimming, soccer, extreme bike, weightlifting, trampoline and much more!
- Defend your own country and visit the World: United States, Australia, Japan, France…

- An enhanced version of “30 Sport Games in 1”, with revamped design, new games and more customisation!
7. A primary weapon + Heavy Bowgun: ranged ammunition utility
Mobalytics describes Heavy Bowgun as a utility secondary for status ammunition and other ammo effects. Because that guide is based on beta playtests, verify the current ammo effects and build details in-game; the available evidence does not support promising a particular buff or damage result.

Start with a concrete problem your primary weapon does not handle comfortably. A second weapon is most useful when it offers a deliberate advantage that justifies the switch.

- Range or elevation: Does the secondary make it easier to reach a target when melee contact is difficult?
- Damage type or part access: Does it add a useful way to pressure a breakable part or address the matchup?
- Element or status: Does the second weapon give you a purposeful alternative for this monster?
- Skills on the weapons: Do the weapon-related skills support both choices? Developers note that skills such as Attack Boost or Guard are on weapons, while general support skills remain on armor.
- Your familiarity: Can you use both weapons safely and effectively, or will the secondary add more complexity than value?
Official developer guidance supports choosing based on the monster, its attack patterns, and breakable parts. In an Xbox Wire article published February 28, 2025, the developers said: “The most appropriate weapon for a given hunt or situation can vary greatly depending on the monster type and attack patterns, breakable parts and so on, so it’s definitely a good idea to switch weapons depending on the situation.”
When to switch during a hunt
The Seikret’s second-weapon slot is an option, not a requirement to rotate constantly. Switch when the other weapon addresses a specific need—such as range, damage type, or the matchup—and stay with your primary when changing would add complexity without a clear benefit. For the Seikret controls and weapon swapping, see the Wilds Field Guide’s weapon-changing guide and its explanation of the Seikret and second weapons.
What the recommendations can—and cannot—tell you
These combinations are practical ways to think about complementary roles, not a current meta list. The available sources do not provide controlled comparisons of damage, a universal ranking, or evidence that one pairing is strongest across monsters and builds. For broader role descriptions, consult the Wilds Field Guide’s overview of all 14 weapons. Mobalytics’ two-weapon combination guide was updated March 4, 2026, and says it is based on beta playtests; use it as a source of pairing ideas, not confirmation of current balance.
