Use an ice weapon if available, add thunder resistance, and watch Rey Dau’s wings and horns for attack cues. Its large lightning discharge leaves a brief opening: get out of the path, then close in on the head while it recovers. Water is a reasonable elemental alternative; avoid thunder weapons.
Prepare for the hunt
Choose an element and a comfortable weapon
Ice is the strongest elemental weakness identified by Icy Veins; water is a useful second choice, also listed by PC Gamer. Icy Veins reports that Rey Dau is immune to thunder, making a thunder weapon a poor elemental pick. PC Gamer recommends mobile weapons such as Sword and Shield, Charge Blade, Long Sword, Dual Blades, and Insect Glaive. That is a practical suggestion, not a universal ranking: use the weapon you can handle reliably.

Reduce thunder risk and bring tools
Thunder-resistant armor or the Thunder Resistance skill can help against Rey Dau’s elemental attacks; meals that raise Thunder Resistance are another option, according to Mobalytics and Monster Hunter Tools. Consider bringing Flash Pods to knock it down while airborne. If you plan to trap it, Icy Veins recommends Pitfall Traps over Shock Traps because Rey Dau is naturally resistant to electricity.
Read its attacks and take the safe opening
Wing lift, drag, and backflip slam
A raised or dragging bladed wing can lead into a slam or sweeping attack. Move out of the wing’s path; PC Gamer advises rolling forward and to either side against the slash. If you use a block or weapon counter, rely on it only when it is already a dependable part of your play. Rey Dau may also jump into a backflip wing slam. Evade the incoming side, then use its short recovery to attack the face or tail, as described by Icy Veins.

Horn-aimed lightning
A smaller line of lightning can indicate where a bolt is about to land. Dodge sideways and stay ready for follow-up shots rather than moving straight back into the marked line, advises PC Gamer.
Large thunder discharge
When Rey Dau pauses and electricity gathers, do not remain in front of it. Move to the side or underneath to leave the discharge’s forward path. After the blast, close in on the face during its recovery; Icy Veins identifies this as a useful opening, and Mobalytics notes that some blasts can create a temporary Focus Strike opportunity.

Charged parts and the nest
Charged wings or tail contacting the ground can produce a fulgurite mantle, which widens attacks and increases charge capacity, according to Monster Hunter Tools. Break those parts when a safe opportunity appears. Near the nest, fulgurite can trigger area shocks; keep moving through that area rather than lingering, warns Mobalytics.
Choose targets based on your goal
Head for damage
The head is the main weak spot identified by Push Square. Prioritize it when Rey Dau is recovering from the large discharge or another attack that leaves it briefly exposed.

Wings for breaks; tail for materials
Wings are breakable and can help address the charged-part threat, so attack them when the opening is safe. The tail can be severed, but Icy Veins says doing so is not essential for general survival. Make it a priority if you want tail materials rather than treating it as a required step for the hunt.

Do not rely on the standard hunt’s timing alone. Icy Veins describes delayed static trails after wing attacks and a chained lightning discharge that can continue from the ground into the air. Watch for the delayed hazards and avoid committing to an attack until the chain has finished. The guide reported time-limited event availability when updated in May 2025; check in-game for the current quest schedule, which can change.

Plan for repeat hunts if you need a specific reward
Push Square lists possible rewards and notes that materials are randomized. A particular material may therefore take repeat hunts; no individual drop is guaranteed.
