Attack a monster to open wounds, then use Focus Mode to line up a Focus Strike. A successful Focus Strike on a wound destroys it, deals heavy damage and stuns the monster. You can also keep attacking the wound to deal increased damage and eventually break it.
How wounds form and how to damage them
Wounds open on monster parts as you attack. There is no established universal hit count for creating one, so keep applying pressure rather than waiting for a fixed number of hits.

Once a wound appears, attacks against it deal increased damage. Continued attacks can break the wound for even greater damage, making ordinary attacks a useful option when a Focus Strike is not safe or well lined up. These are qualitative effects; exact damage multipliers and wound thresholds are not established in the cited sources.
How to spot and aim at wounds
Hold Focus Mode to aim attacks and guards in the direction the camera faces. It also highlights wounds and weak points, helping you identify a target and direct your weapon. Focus Mode is an aiming and targeting aid, not a stated blanket damage buff. Capcom describes the mechanic in its official Monster Hunter Wilds overview.

On the PlayStation control scheme in the PlayStation starter guide, hold L2 to enter Focus Mode. Button mappings can differ on Xbox, PC, or with alternate and remapped controls; check the controls for your platform if these inputs do not match.
How to use Focus Strike on a wound
- Activate Focus Mode and turn the camera toward the wound you want to hit.
- Move within your weapon’s effective reach and line up the attack.
- Use your weapon’s Focus Strike input. On the PlayStation controls cited above, press R1 while in Focus Mode.
- When the Focus Strike hits a wound, it destroys that wound, deals heavy damage and stuns the monster. The PlayStation guide also reports bonus resources for successful wound destruction.
Focus Strikes are weapon-specific special attacks. Capcom says they deal massive damage when they hit a wound or weak point, but the confirmed wound-destruction and stun effects apply to a hit on a wound; do not assume every weak-point hit also destroys a wound or causes the same stun. The relevant descriptions appear in Capcom’s official overview and PlayStation’s starter guide.

Choose between continued attacks and a Focus Strike

Before committing, check the wound’s reach, your angle, the monster’s recovery, and how long your weapon’s attack leaves you committed. Those are practical tactical considerations, not fixed system rules. If the monster is still threatening you or the line to the wound is obstructed, keep attacking when safe or wait for a better opening. A visible wound does not guarantee that a Focus Strike will connect safely.

The cited descriptions do not establish a universal number of attacks needed to open a wound, how long a wound lasts, a damage multiplier, or a precise Focus Strike timing window. Treat wounds as targets to exploit when they appear, rather than relying on an unsupported hit count or timer.
