The 2001 monster-raising simulation is included with a paid Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. It is not a Pokémon clone in structure: you create monsters rather than catch them, train them for battles, and eventually combine them into hybrids.
What was added to Nintendo Switch Online?
Nintendo’s October 14, 2026 update added three Game Boy Advance games to the Nintendo Classics catalogue:

| Game | Original release | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Monster Rancher Advance (Monster Farm Advance on Nintendo’s Japanese pages) | 2001 | Monster-raising simulation with turn-based battles |
| Metal Slug Advance | 2004 | Action shooter |
| Kururin Paradise | 2002 | Action-puzzle game |
The catalogue software itself does not require a separate purchase, but access to Game Boy Advance Nintendo Classics requires the paid Expansion Pack tier rather than the standard Nintendo Switch Online plan. Nintendo’s membership terms, territory availability and renewal conditions can vary, so check the membership screen for your account and region before subscribing.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

The comparison starts with the basic fantasy—raising creatures and testing them in battles—but the games take very different routes to get there. Pokémon is built around exploring a broad world, finding creatures and adding them to a collection. Monster Rancher Advance is a focused raising game: there is no expansive world to explore and no system for catching wild monsters.

How the word-based monster creation works
Nintendo’s description gives the game its most distinctive hook: enter words from everyday life into an ancient-letter tablet, and the word determines the monster that appears. The result turns naming into part of the game’s experimentation. You then raise the created monster, build its strength and techniques, and enter competitions.
That process makes Monster Rancher Advance feel less like filling a Pokédex and more like managing an unpredictable training project. The point is not simply to find a rare creature in the right patch of grass; it is to see what a chosen word produces, invest time in it and decide whether it is worth developing or combining with another monster.

What “fusion” adds to the raising loop
Monster Rancher Advance allows monsters to be combined into hybrids later in the game. Fusion gives the raising system a second layer: an underwhelming result is not necessarily wasted, because it can become part of a stronger creation. That emphasis on breeding-style experimentation is one of the clearest ways the game separates itself from a conventional catch-and-evolve formula.

The trade-off is that this is not a full-scale role-playing adventure. Players looking for towns, routes and a large campaign world should not expect Pokémon’s structure. The appeal is narrower and more deliberate: create a monster, train it, test its techniques in turn-based competition and plan what to do with it next.

How to play it on Nintendo Switch
- Have Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. The Game Boy Advance Nintendo Classics catalogue is part of this paid tier.
- Open the Game Boy Advance Nintendo Classics catalogue on a Switch console using the membership account.
- Select Monster Rancher Advance from the October 14, 2026 additions and launch it through the catalogue software.
- Enter words at the ancient-letter tablet, then raise the resulting monster and compete with its strength and techniques.
If the game does not appear, first confirm that the active Nintendo account has the Expansion Pack tier and that the title is available in its territory. A standard Nintendo Switch Online subscription alone is not the stated requirement for Game Boy Advance Classics.
Is it worth playing?
For players who want another creature battler, the answer depends on whether they prefer management and experimentation to exploration. Monster Rancher Advance is a good fit if you enjoy seeing how a system reacts to your inputs, gradually improving a creature and planning hybrid combinations. It is a weaker fit if your priority is a large adventure, a huge roster collected through encounters or a conventional RPG progression.

GAMINGbible writer Sam Cawley describes the game through personal nostalgia, recalling it as a road-trip and Nintendo GameCube-era favorite and writing: “Monster Rancher Advance rocks and it’s worth a go if you’re into Pokémon.” That is an individual recommendation, not an independent review score or a measured consensus. The game’s arrival nevertheless makes the Expansion Pack catalogue more interesting for anyone curious about an older, more systems-driven take on monster battling.

Metal Slug Advance
Originally released in 2004, Metal Slug Advance brings the series’ run-and-gun action to the Game Boy Advance. It is a fundamentally different kind of session from Monster Rancher Advance: reflexes and shooting replace creature training and turn-based decisions.
