Moonbrella is planned for a worldwide digital Nintendo eShop release on Nintendo Switch in 2026. Its defining idea is simple but unusual: there is no conventional jump button. You move a lone robot through a physics-driven Metroidvania by jabbing the umbrella tip into terrain, floating with the canopy and hooking ledges or vines with the handle.
What Moonbrella is on Nintendo Switch
Moonbrella is an upcoming 2D platformer and Metroidvania from independent developer Jett Williams. The Switch edition is announced for a digital worldwide launch through Nintendo eShop during 2026, but no exact day has been published. The Steam listing also marks the game as planned for 2026 and currently coming soon.

The game replaces the familiar jump arc with a movement system built around one umbrella. Every traversal action depends on how you aim, when you trigger it and how the resulting momentum interacts with the environment. That makes the umbrella both a control scheme and the central puzzle-solving tool.
You play a lone robot crossing an abandoned planet. The connected world includes dark caves, ancient structures and an active volcano. Along the route are flowers and gemstones, while the larger objective is to revive a dying sunflower trapped in the moon’s shadow.

How the umbrella movement works
Moonbrella’s movement is designed to be expressive rather than a sequence of fixed animations. The three umbrella functions cover the jobs normally handled by jumping, gliding and grappling.
Jab the tip to vault
Pointing the umbrella tip into suitable terrain lets the robot jab it into the surface and vault over obstacles. The angle of the jab affects the resulting launch, so a player can use the same basic action for a short hop, a high climb or a long diagonal boost. Obstacles are therefore solved by reading surfaces and choosing a launch direction instead of pressing a standard jump button.
Open the canopy to slow and float
Opening the canopy changes the robot’s descent. The umbrella can slow a fall and keep the character floating across a gap, allowing long horizontal travel that a normal platformer would reserve for a gliding power-up. Canopy timing matters: opening too early may bleed away useful momentum, while opening late can leave too little time to correct a landing.
Hook with the handle
The handle can catch ledges and vines. A successful hook gives the robot a way to climb surfaces and build speed before the next maneuver. Handle catches link separate actions into a route: hook, swing or climb, release with momentum, then jab or deploy the canopy to continue.

| Umbrella action | Primary purpose | What the player controls |
|---|---|---|
| Tip jab | Vault over obstacles and gain height | Contact point, angle and timing |
| Canopy | Slow descent and float over distance | Deployment timing and horizontal drift |
| Handle hook | Catch ledges or vines, climb and accelerate | Target selection, release timing and momentum |
Because these actions affect one another physically, a route is not just a chain of button prompts. A handle catch can create the speed needed for a later vault; a canopy opening can preserve a line after a mistimed launch; and a poorly chosen jab angle can send the robot away from the next anchor point. The published descriptions emphasize multiple approaches, so difficult sections are intended to reward experimentation rather than one mandatory sequence.
Progression: replacement parts change where you can go
Exploration is tied to umbrella upgrades. Replacement parts unlock new movement options and open locations that were previously inaccessible. The available descriptions do not name every part or specify a fixed upgrade order, so the exact progression structure remains to be revealed by the finished game.
The important distinction is that upgrades are traversal tools, not merely statistical bonuses. A new part can alter how the tip, canopy or handle behaves, creating a new route through an earlier area or making a previously visible ledge reachable. In a Metroidvania structure, that encourages returning to connected regions after an upgrade and checking obstacles that were clearly designed to be revisited.
What to look for while exploring
- Surfaces positioned at unusual angles, which may be intended for a tip-jab launch.
- Vines or ledges that sit just beyond a normal canopy glide, suggesting a future handle interaction.
- Gaps that appear impossible with the starting umbrella, marking possible upgrade gates.
- Side passages containing flowers or gemstones, since collectibles can signal optional routes rather than the critical path.
Until the developer publishes a complete parts list, it is safest to treat each upgrade as a change in movement vocabulary. Learn what the new part permits, then reconsider old rooms instead of assuming the next objective is always ahead.

The planet, collectibles and main objective
The setting is an interconnected abandoned planet rather than a series of isolated stages. Its environments include underground caves, remnants of ancient structures and a live volcano. These locations give the movement system different physical problems: caves can compress the available launch angle, ruins can stack ledges and vines vertically, and volcanic terrain can demand rapid decisions around hazardous-looking gaps.
Flowers and gemstones are placed throughout the world. The published descriptions identify them as things to collect but do not state a currency value, completion percentage or reward table. They can therefore be approached as exploration goals until the game explains their exact purpose.
The narrative objective is to try to revive a dying sunflower caught in the moon’s shadow. That premise gives the journey a clear emotional focus while leaving the moment-to-moment play centered on movement. The robot’s route across abandoned places, rather than a conventional combat campaign, is the way the story and setting are presented in the current descriptions.
Why physics and speedrunning matter
Moonbrella is explicitly built around physics-based movement, expressive solutions and speedrunning. Physics here means that launch angle, falling state, hooks and retained momentum influence the outcome instead of every move snapping to a fixed distance. A player who understands those relationships can search for faster lines through a room, while another player can choose a safer sequence that uses more anchors and wider landings.

For a first playthrough
- Use the canopy early in a fall to learn how much horizontal correction it allows.
- Practice tip jabs against different surfaces and note which angles produce height versus distance.
- Approach every visible vine or ledge as a possible handle target, even when it is not on the obvious route.
- When a launch fails, identify whether the problem was aim, timing or insufficient speed before trying a different action.
For time-focused runs
Speedrunning potential comes from linking actions rather than waiting for a reset between them. A route may combine a handle catch for acceleration, a release at the right point, a tip jab into a sloped surface and a short canopy deployment to land farther away. The game is described as supporting multiple approaches, so optimal movement may depend on discovering skips or lines that are not obvious from a first completion.
No official categories, target times or leaderboard system have been announced. That means the speedrunning emphasis is a design characteristic, not a promise of a particular online ranking feature.
Switch release status and other platforms

Controller remapping is particularly relevant to a game with three timing-sensitive umbrella functions. If the Switch version retains it, players could place tip jab, canopy and handle actions where they can be reached without losing control of movement. Color alternatives and visual-comfort settings may also help players distinguish environmental anchors and effects, although the available listing does not detail the individual modes.
What has not been announced yet
Readers deciding whether to wishlist Moonbrella should treat the following details as open:
- The exact Nintendo Switch launch date in 2026.
- The Nintendo eShop price, regional pricing and any launch discount.
- Whether a preorder period will exist.
- Whether a physical cartridge edition will be produced.
- The final country-by-country availability schedule.
- The complete list of umbrella replacement parts and how each is earned.
- Any online features, leaderboards or formal speedrun categories.
None of those omissions changes the core announcement: the Switch version is planned, but the timing and commercial details are not final in the published information.

Moonbrella is most promising for players who enjoy movement systems that can be learned, refined and expressed in different ways. The no-jump design will appeal to people who like turning a small set of tools into complex traversal, while the connected map and replacement parts fit the expectations of a Metroidvania.
It may be a less natural fit for someone seeking combat-heavy progression, because the current descriptions focus on platforming, exploration, collectibles and movement mastery. There is also no published indication of a multiplayer mode; the PlayStation concept page specifies one-player offline play.
How to follow the Switch launch
The practical next step is to watch the Nintendo eShop listing and the developer’s official announcements for the missing date and price. A wishlist entry, when the game becomes available in a player’s region, is the most direct way to receive storefront notifications. The live Steam page can provide a second release-status signal, but a Steam listing does not establish the Switch launch day.
Until those details arrive, the clearest expectation is a 2026 digital Switch platformer built around umbrella physics: jab to vault, canopy to float, handle to hook and upgraded parts to reach more of the abandoned planet.
