Moonring is a free-to-play, turn-based fantasy RPG on Steam, created by Dene Carter, whom PC Gamer identifies as a co-creator of Fable. But the Zelda comparison and “10/10” label in the original framing are not supported by the available sources: Steam’s positive-review percentage is a player-review indicator, not a critic score, and the game is described as a retro, tile-based RPG rather than a Zelda-like.
What Moonring is
Released on Steam on 28 September 2023, Moonring is developed and published by Fluttermind, LLC. Steam describes it as a dark-fantasy, turn-based RPG with a neon aesthetic, drawing on classic turn-based role-playing games and roguelikes. PC Gamer’s free-games guide, last updated 1 September 2026, calls it a retro turn-based RPG by a co-creator of Fable.
The setting is Caldera, a world shaped by five moons and strange gods. You play as the “Dreamless,” free to choose a destiny, challenge the established order, or pursue the role of Archon. Steam presents the world as open and hand-designed, while dungeons reconfigure when you leave or die.
Why the Zelda and 10/10 claims need context
The Fable connection is supported by PC Gamer; the Zelda comparison is not established by the cited descriptions. Moonring’s defining format is turn-based movement and combat on a tile-based world, not the real-time action gameplay commonly associated with Zelda. The comparison should be treated as headline framing, not as a reliable description of how the game plays.

Nor does Steam rate Moonring 10/10. At access on 5 October 2026, the Steam listing showed 2,106 English user reviews with 95% positive, and 14 recent reviews with 85% positive. These live figures can change and reflect user reviews, not a critic score or a ten-point rating.
What you do in the game
Moonring mixes exploration with combat, trade, stealth, and sailing. Its low-handholding approach is deliberate: Dene’s note on the Steam page calls the game a love letter to older RPGs, emphasizing “true open-world gameplay” and a “lack of handholding.” That means players looking for frequent guidance or a tightly directed quest path should expect a different experience from a modern, heavily signposted adventure.

- Listen: The listed dungeon-synth soundtrack contains more than 50 tracks, according to Steam.
Who Moonring is likely to suit
Moonring is a natural fit for players drawn to older, exploratory RPG design: a broad world, tile-based turn-based play, dungeons that change between visits, and less handholding than many contemporary adventures. Its Fable connection comes from its creator, not from evidence that it shares Fable’s combat or structure.
PC Gamer says the game can be enjoyed with a gamepad, so a controller is an option rather than a requirement. Steam lists Windows and macOS support, single-player play, and English interface text.
