Mortal Kombat 11 is worth playing for its deliberate, strategically deep fighting, strong tutorials and cinematic story—but its grind-heavy route to cosmetic rewards is a real drawback. It is especially appealing to newcomers who want to learn the series and fans who value combat depth. If unlocking gear is your main goal, expect a slower, less satisfying journey.
What do reviews say about Mortal Kombat 11?
Launch-period reviews broadly praised the fighting and presentation while disagreeing on how much the progression systems detract from the whole package. Metacritic’s critic listing shows IGN at 90/100 and Wccftech at 85/100; GameSpot’s review hub lists a 9/10. Those scores are from 2019, not fresh evaluations.

IGN called it “the best game in the 27-year-old series” on the strength of its “deep, methodical new mechanics and fun story.” Wccftech praised its core mechanics, production values and cinematic story, while also flagging grindy customization and microtransactions. GameSpot’s review roundup likewise highlights the tutorials, roster and story, but notes randomized Krypt rewards and friction associated with always-online behavior. These are contemporary-at-launch assessments, not evidence of current server conditions.
Metacritic displayed a user score of 4.4 from 2,601 ratings on October 8, 2026, categorized as Generally Unfavorable. That dynamic score is substantially less positive than the critic scores listed on the same page and may change over time. See Metacritic’s Mortal Kombat 11 reviews and rating snapshot.

How good is the fighting?
Combat is the game’s clearest strength. Reviews describe it as methodical rather than button-mashy: spacing, timing and choosing when to pressure or defend matter. The custom variation system lets players personalize fighters, and the roster mixes returning characters with newcomers. Warner Bros. described those variations and the roster as central features at launch, while reviewers focused on how the systems play in practice.
New players get more than a short controls primer. GameSpot’s review describes a tutorial program that progresses from basic attacks to advanced subjects such as frame data, safe and unsafe moves, pressure and frame traps. That makes the game unusually approachable for someone willing to practice, while giving experienced players useful terminology and concepts to work with. GameSpot’s Mortal Kombat 11 review hub.
Is the story worth playing?
The story is a major part of the package: a time-bending continuation of Mortal Kombat X, presented with cinematic cutscenes and a large cast. Warner Bros. announced it as a continuation, and reviewers including IGN and GameSpot praised its entertainment value. That does not mean every critic considered the writing equally strong, but players who enjoy dramatic, character-led fighting-game campaigns have a substantial reason to play.
GameSpot’s review roundup also relays Game Informer’s Andrew Reiner’s point that the story can be completed quickly, while getting particular gear may take longer than finishing it. The campaign is therefore a focused story mode, not an endless source of progression. Read GameSpot’s review roundup.

What is the main drawback?
Progression and customization unlocks can turn into a grind. Reviewers criticized randomized Krypt rewards and the time required to obtain desired gear; Towers of Time and the Krypt can also feel opaque to players trying to work out where rewards come from. If you chiefly want to experiment with different looks and collect every item, that friction is more consequential than it is for someone who mainly wants the campaign or matches.
Some launch-period reviewers also reported online-related friction. That criticism should be understood in its 2019 context: it does not establish what online services, matchmaking or server performance are like now. Check current platform service status if online play is essential to your decision.

What does Aftermath add, and what was free?
Aftermath is a paid story expansion, not just a free update. Warner Bros. announced it for May 26, 2020, with a new story continuation and three fighters: Fujin, Sheeva and RoboCop. The free update released alongside it gave all owners stages, Stage Fatalities and Friendships.
Warner Bros. Games Support notes that the paid expansion is still required for its story, those new characters and later skin packs. Seeing “Aftermath” in a console menu can refer to the free update and does not prove that the paid expansion is included. Warner Bros.’ Aftermath announcement · Warner Bros. Quick Recap
Who should play Mortal Kombat 11?
- Newcomers: A strong fit if you want a fighting game that teaches fundamentals and more advanced techniques, and you are happy to practice.
- Series fans: A compelling choice if deliberate combat, a broad roster and a cinematic continuation of Mortal Kombat X are your priorities.
- Cosmetic collectors: Approach with caution if your enjoyment depends on quickly unlocking specific gear; reviews repeatedly identify progression as a grind.
- Online-focused players: Treat older cross-play and connectivity reports as historical. GameSpot reported cross-play at the time between PlayStation 4/5 and Xbox One/Series systems, with PC, Switch and Stadia separate; that is not a current guarantee.
