Cloud Strife is the clearest starting point: he is Final Fantasy VII’s protagonist, and his recognition extends beyond the game itself. But “most iconic” is not a single official ranking. These characters stand out for different reasons—story importance, distinctive design, lasting emotional impact and audience response.
Spoilers: This guide covers character roles and premise-level story details, but avoids major later plot revelations.
What makes a Final Fantasy VII character iconic?
Iconicness is best understood as several overlapping qualities, not a definitive leaderboard. A character may be central to the plot, instantly recognizable by appearance, memorable in combat, or significant to the game’s themes and relationships. Polls add evidence about audience response, but only for the question and participants involved.
Final Fantasy VII’s conflict gives its cast a shared foundation. Shinra controls mako, a resource Square Enix describes as “this natural resource drawn directly from the planet’s life force.” Cloud joins the anti-Shinra group AVALANCHE as a mercenary, though he initially has little investment in its cause. The characters around him make that struggle personal as well as planetary.

The central characters
Cloud Strife: the uncertain hero
Cloud is an ex-SOLDIER who arrives in Midgar as a mercenary and accepts a job with AVALANCHE at Tifa’s invitation. His enormous sword makes him visually unmistakable, but his deeper hook is the tension between the confident fighter he presents and the uncertainty surrounding his past. As the story develops, his pursuit of Sephiroth becomes inseparable from his search for the truth about himself.
His cultural reach is supported by more than one kind of evidence. BAFTA’s 2024 poll of over 4,000 players worldwide placed Cloud 16th among its top 20 iconic video game characters. BAFTA also noted that he had made 30-plus appearances in video games and wider media since his 1997 debut. Separately, GamesRadar reported in June 2026 that Cloud placed second in a nationwide Famitsu favorite-character survey in Japan.

Sephiroth: the looming nemesis
Sephiroth is not simply a striking antagonist with a long sword and silver hair. Square Enix identifies him as Cloud’s nemesis, and its official synopsis presents his return as the development that makes the threat to the Planet greater than the group first understood. His importance comes from the scale of that danger and from the personal connection that makes the conflict matter to Cloud.
Tifa Lockhart: friend, fighter and emotional anchor
Tifa grew up with Cloud, works as a barmaid and is an active AVALANCHE member. When they reunite, she senses that something about him is wrong. Square Enix describes her as sensitive beneath a cheerful manner and as a trained hand-to-hand fighter. That combination gives her a role beyond either confidante or combatant: she helps ground the story’s emotional relationships while taking part directly in the resistance.

Aerith Gainsborough: an independent path through the story
Aerith sells flowers in Midgar’s slums and wants an ordinary life, but Shinra’s interest in her unusual qualities changes the course of her story. Square Enix describes Cloud’s intervention as the beginning of her journey toward a larger purpose. Her significance is not limited to being a counterpart in Cloud’s relationships; she has her own resilience, agency and narrative direction.
Barret Wallace: the cause made personal
Barret leads AVALANCHE in its fight against Shinra’s exploitation of the Planet. His distinctive weapon arm makes him easy to recognize, while his responsibilities complicate the politics of the struggle: he is also raising his adopted daughter, Marlene. The character brings together environmental conflict, personal grievance and family responsibility.

Other memorable members of the cast
Red XIII
Red XIII’s fierce appearance contrasts with the gentleness and relative youth in Square Enix’s profile. That contrast makes him memorable without reducing him to a creature design; he is a distinct presence among the party members.
Yuffie Kisaragi
Yuffie is a mischievous Wutai ninja searching for materia. Her energetic personality and specific goal give her a different texture from the core Midgar resistance story.

Vincent Valentine
Vincent is a former Turk whose life has been shaped by Shinra experiments and traumatic memories. His reserved presence and connection to the corporation’s past add a darker strand to the wider cast.
Zack Fair
Zack appears among the characters on Square Enix’s Rebirth character page. His relevance to the broader story is substantial, though explaining it in detail would require plot revelations beyond this guide’s spoiler-light scope.

The available polls measure different things, so their results should not be merged into one ranking. BAFTA’s 2024 global poll asked participants about iconic video game characters across games; its sample of over 4,000 players placed Cloud at number 16 in the top 20. GamesRadar’s June 2026 account of a nationwide Famitsu survey in Japan reported Cloud second and Tifa third among favorite video game characters. That is a different audience and a different survey context.
Square Enix’s own 2019 portal poll asked a narrower question: “With which FF character would you like to ride a Ferris wheel?” In results for the poll running January 31 to February 6, 2019, Tifa placed first and Aerith second. That result says who respondents chose for that specific imagined outing, not who is universally the most popular character.
