There is no single best troop for every Bannerlord army: a foot archer, mounted archer, and armored lancer solve different problems. This role-weighted ranking prioritizes battlefield usefulness, flexibility, recruitment access, and upkeep rather than claiming an official or universal order. The current comparison used here covers v1.4.8, released August 10, 2026, and is an editorial comparison—not a TaleWorlds ranking. Its listed skills draw on community-wiki data, so check the in-game encyclopedia if a later patch changes a unit.

How to read this ranking

The available comparison supports a close look at six tier-six noble troops, not a rigorously measured head-to-head ranking of 15 units. To honor the title without implying unsupported precision, the first six entries are those noble lines, ordered here by role and practical army value; the remaining entries are role-based choices rather than a verified statistical ranking. The sources do not establish current, comparable skill and upkeep data for all 15.

Bannerlord troop performance depends on terrain, formation, enemy composition, and command. The picks below are recommendations for particular jobs, not guarantees of battle outcomes. The six noble troops are listed at the same wage, 17 denars per day, by Game Rack’s v1.4.8 comparison; their practical differences are role and access, not that listed wage. Game Rack’s comparison also notes that most can be upgraded from their tier-five line or rarely recruited from villages.

The six tier-six noble picks

1. Battanian Fian Champion — foot-archer specialist

Choose the Fian Champion when you want powerful foot archery with a credible close-combat fallback. Game Rack’s v1.4.8 comparison lists Bow 220 and Two-Handed 220, citing community-wiki values. An older Gamer Guides ranged-troops page reports Bow 260; that older figure should not be treated as the v1.4.8 value. The community wiki describes the Champion as a powerful foot archer carrying a two-handed sword, while noting that recruitment can be scarce. It is a strong pick when you can obtain and protect it, but scarcity makes it a less dependable foundation for every army. Mount & Blade Wiki: Battanian Fian Champion.

2. Khuzait Khan’s Guard — flexible mounted troop

The Khan’s Guard stands out for combining mounted mobility with ranged and melee options. Game Rack lists Bow 200, Polearm 200, and Riding 200 for v1.4.8. Its described loadout includes a bow, two stacks of arrows, a two-handed polearm, high-tier armor, and an armored warhorse. The comparison and community wiki entry emphasize its flexibility, including use on foot. That versatility makes it a compelling mounted choice when you want more than a one-purpose cavalry unit; its value still depends on the battle and how you deploy it.

3. Imperial Elite Cataphract — armored cavalry

Pick the Elite Cataphract when your plan calls for heavily armored mounted troops. Its noble line offers a clear cavalry role, but recruitment is a notable constraint: Game Rack says it can appear in villages tied to castles, unlike the more general village recruitment description for most of the six noble lines. That makes it a less convenient troop to source in quantity.

4. Aserai Vanguard Faris — mobile polearm and throwing cavalry

The Vanguard Faris is a natural option for an Aserai cavalry roster built around mobility and polearms. Game Rack’s listed v1.4.8 values include Polearm 200 and Throwing 140. Those figures suggest useful ranged pressure before or during engagement, but do not establish a universal advantage over other cavalry: terrain, formation, and the enemy matter.

5. Sturgian Druzhinnik Champion — Sturgian noble cavalry

The Druzhinnik Champion gives Sturgian armies a noble cavalry option. Game Rack lists Riding 170 and Athletics 140. That combination is relevant to a mounted troop that can also operate on foot, but the comparison does not establish that it outperforms the other noble cavalry in every battle.

6. Vlandian Banner Knight — Vlandian noble cavalry

The Banner Knight is the Vlandian noble cavalry choice in this group. Treat precise skill comparisons with caution: the wiki page used by Game Rack is marked v1.2.11, older than the other troop references in its comparison. The available evidence supports its place as a top-tier Vlandian cavalry option, not a precise claim that it ranks above or below the other five in all conditions.

Role-based choices beyond the noble six

The current material does not verify comparable v1.4.8 data for nine additional units, so these are role recommendations, not numbered placements in a proven 15-unit ranking. Use the in-game encyclopedia and your campaign’s recruitment options to confirm the exact troop line and availability.

7. A dependable shield infantry line — front-line holding

For a front line that must hold position, prioritize shield-bearing infantry with solid armor over a troop chosen only for an impressive weapon skill. They can protect ranged troops and buy time for cavalry or a flank. The sources reviewed here do not establish a single current infantry unit as the definitive best pick.

8. A two-handed infantry line — concentrated melee damage

Two-handed troops are a more specialized choice for breaking or punishing an engaged enemy line. They trade some defensive utility for offensive pressure; avoid treating them as interchangeable with shield infantry when the formation needs to absorb sustained missile fire.

9. A spear infantry line — anti-cavalry defense

When opposing cavalry is the problem, choose infantry equipped to threaten mounted charges and keep the formation coherent. Their value is situational: they are a defensive answer, not a replacement for a balanced line against every opponent.

10. A crossbow line — ranged support with a different weapon profile

Crossbow troops offer another ranged option alongside archers. The available sources do not provide a current, apples-to-apples comparison of their damage, reload, or access against other ranged lines, so choose them for the needs of your roster rather than assuming they are categorically superior.

11. A regular bow-archer line — accessible ranged depth

When you need more ranged troops than scarce noble archers can supply, a standard archer line can provide depth. Its practical value is often the ability to field enough troops for your formation; the sources here do not establish a definitive current unit or ranking for this role.

12. A mounted archer line — harassment and repositioning

Mounted archers can pressure and reposition around slower formations, but their effectiveness depends on space, ammunition, and command. The Khan’s Guard is the sourced standout for flexible mounted use in this comparison; no other mounted archer is established here as its statistical equal or better.

13. A light cavalry line — pursuit and mobility

Use lighter cavalry when pursuit, rapid movement, or screening matters more than the protection of heavy cavalry. It is a role choice, not a claim that a specific unnamed line beats the noble cavalry in a direct contest.

14. A shock cavalry line — charge impact

For a decisive mounted charge, favor a cavalry line equipped for close engagement and time its attack against an occupied or disrupted enemy. The Banner Knight, Elite Cataphract, Druzhinnik Champion, and Vanguard Faris are sourced noble cavalry options, but the comparison does not supply enough common battle data to rank their charge results.

15. A flexible mixed-role troop — adaptability over specialization

If you need a troop that can contribute in more than one formation or combat situation, flexibility can outweigh a narrow peak strength. The Khan’s Guard is the clearest sourced example in this article. For other mixed-role choices, confirm their loadout and current skills in-game rather than relying on an unsupported universal top-15 order.

Recruitment and army planning

Top-tier strength is useful only if you can field the troops. Game Rack says most of the six noble units can be upgraded from their tier-five predecessor or recruited rarely from villages; Imperial Elite Cataphracts are tied to castle-bound villages in its account. The Fian Champion is also described by the community wiki as scarce. Plan around the troop lines your campaign can actually supply instead of building an army composition that depends on a steady stream of rare recruits.

  • For a foot-archer core: pursue Fian Champions if available, but account for recruitment scarcity.
  • For mounted flexibility: consider Khan’s Guards for their bow, polearm, and riding profile.
  • For noble cavalry: choose among the faction lines you can recruit and upgrade reliably; the cited comparison lists all six nobles at 17 denars per day.
  • For a balanced force: combine troops by job—line-holding infantry, ranged support, and mobile units—rather than filling every slot with a nominally elite troop.

Version and data limits

Game Rack reports Bannerlord v1.4.8 was released on August 10, 2026, and says versions 1.4.6 through 1.4.8 did not change tier-six noble troops. Its comparison uses community-wiki skill values, and its referenced Banner Knight entry is labeled v1.2.11. Those version labels matter: published figures can differ, as the Fian Champion’s Bow value illustrates. If you are playing a later patch, use the in-game encyclopedia to confirm current skills and equipment before committing to a recruitment plan.
