Mouse: P.I. For Hire pairs striking 1930s-cartoon style with lively first-person shooting, but its detective work asks little of the player. In Bradly Shankar’s April 16, 2026 MobileSyrup review, the game’s animation, music, performances and responsive combat make a strong impression; repetitive fights and mostly automated clue-solving keep the mystery from matching that appeal.
What kind of game is Mouse: P.I. For Hire?
Mouse: P.I. For Hire is a first-person shooter built around private investigator Jack Pepper. A missing-person case grows into a broader conspiracy, with the story moving between linear missions and Jack’s office hub. The game’s presentation draws on black-and-white cartoons and noir, while its combat emphasizes movement and animated weapons.

That mix is the source of both the game’s appeal and its main frustration in Shankar’s review: it looks and sounds like a detective cartoon, but the investigation rarely gives the player much detective work to do.
What the review praises
Distinctive cartoon-noir presentation
Shankar praises the handcrafted-looking rubber-hose animation and monochrome art direction. The contrast between the innocent-looking cartoon style and graphic combat gives the action a striking edge rather than making it feel gentle. A jazz soundtrack reinforces the noir mood, and Troy Baker’s grizzled, Brooklyn-accented performance as Jack Pepper anchors a colorful supporting cast.

Responsive, expressive shooting
The review describes the shooting as satisfying and movement-focused. Weapons such as a freeze ray and acid sprayer help turn combat into animated spectacle. For players drawn to the game by its visual identity and action, those are meaningful strengths—not just decoration around the mystery.
Why the detective mechanics fall short
After linear missions, Jack returns to his office and places discovered clues on a board. But, as Shankar describes it, the game automatically connects the necessary clues and advances the story. The board records progress more than it tests the player’s reasoning.

That distinction matters because the case is central to the premise. A light deduction puzzle could have made players participate in Jack’s conclusions without requiring a complex investigation system. Instead, the review finds that the player largely watches the detective work happen. The hub does offer a baseball-card minigame, with cards to find and buy during the campaign, but it does not fill that deduction-shaped gap.
What may wear thin
Repeated encounters and visible spawns
Shankar’s principal combat caveat is repetition: he finds the fights recurring and enemy variety limited. Skull-marked doors signal enemy spawns, a telegraph he says can break immersion. These are the reviewer’s qualitative impressions, not measured findings or a claim about every player’s experience.

- CLASSIC MOUSETRAP GAMEPLAY: Do you remember playing the Mouse Trap game when you were a child? Create special moments by introducing your kids and grandkids to classic Mouse Trap gameplay
- EASY SET UP: This edition of the Mouse Trap game is easier to set up than previous versions
- ACTION AND CHAIN REACTION GAME: Players scurry around the gameboard collecting and stealing cheese...but they need to watch out for the trap! The first player to collect 6 cheese wedges wins
- ACTION-PACKED FUN: Kids can have lots of laughs with their friends as they set off the chain-reaction trap to catch other mice. It's a fun indoor activity and makes a great birthday gift for kids 6 and up
Comedy that can undercut the noir
The review also finds the frequent cheese puns and pop-culture or game-design references disruptive to the atmosphere. Players who enjoy constant wordplay may be more forgiving; those looking for sustained noir tension may find the jokes pull attention away from the case.

| If you value… | What this review suggests |
|---|---|
| Art direction, animation and music | A strong fit: these are among Shankar’s clearest positives. |
| Fast, expressive first-person shooting | Promising, though the reviewer says encounters can become repetitive and enemy variety is limited. |
| Solving a mystery through your own deductions | A weaker fit: the clue board automatically links required evidence and moves the story forward. |
| Consistent noir tone | Depends on your tolerance for frequent puns and references that the reviewer finds disruptive. |
