Critics welcomed its naval combat and expanded campaign, while some flagged weak AI, a short story and limits to the battles. That makes the score a useful first signal—not a broad consensus.
What do critics think of War Sails?
Metacritic’s PC critic page lists War Sails at 75/100, or “Generally Favorable,” based on six critic reviews. Four reviews are positive, two are mixed and none are negative in the snapshot accessed in 2026. With such a small sample, one additional review could meaningfully change the balance.
The overall praise is for the expansion’s naval battles and the way they broaden the existing campaign. A favorable summary from Loot Level Chill, which gave the expansion 85, put its view plainly: “If you’re into Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord, then War Sails is a no-brainer purchase.” That is one reviewer’s opinion, not a guarantee that every Bannerlord player will enjoy it.
The more reserved reviews focus on noticeable AI weaknesses, a short naval story, and concerns that the Nords or naval battles feel limited in the reviewed build. One critic summary questioned whether the battles risk becoming little more than pirate hunting. These are individual reviewers’ assessments, not findings that every player will encounter in the same way.

What does War Sails add to Bannerlord?
TaleWorlds describes War Sails as a single-player naval expansion that adds naval warfare, a northern region and the Nord faction, integrated with the existing campaign. It launched on November 26, 2025. The following features come from the publisher’s Steam listing; they describe the advertised content rather than independent assessments of how well each feature works.
- Naval combat: Customizable fleets and battles featuring boarding and ramming.
- More seaborne activity: Village raids by sea, plus additions for shipbuilding and trade.
- New campaign content: A questline set alongside the broader campaign.
- Custom battles: A separate option for naval encounters.
- Ships: The listing specifies 22 in total: 17 warships, four trade ships and one civilian fishing ship.
TaleWorlds’ launch announcement covers the release, while the Steam listing describes the expansion’s features.
Is War Sails worth it?
It looks most appealing if you already enjoy Bannerlord and want naval battles woven into a broader campaign. The critic summaries identify those additions as the expansion’s main draw. If you are expecting a long, standalone naval story or consistently strong AI, the mixed comments about story length, AI and battle variety are reasons to be more cautious.
Critic reviews are not the only signal, and Steam user reviews painted a less positive picture in the snapshot accessed on October 8, 2026. Steam labeled overall English-language reviews “Mixed,” with 54% positive from 2,509 reviews. For the preceding 30 days, it labeled reviews “Mostly Negative,” with 36% positive from 63 reviews. These are time-sensitive storefront snapshots, not stable scores; the recent figure also comes from a much smaller pool than the all-time count.

The critic aggregate is a six-review sample; Steam’s figures reflect user reviews and can shift as new reviews arrive.
