In Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord, a workshop is a player-owned business in a town. The practical choice is not simply which business type is “best”: weigh local input supply, town demand and prices, same-type competition, and the settlement’s security. Workshops can generate income, but the available evidence does not establish a dependable daily return or a universally best type.
This guide is about campaign businesses, not Steam Workshop, the platform for publishing mods. The distinction matters: TaleWorlds’ official Steam Workshop instructions concern mod uploads, not buying or operating an in-game workshop.
What a campaign workshop does
A workshop is a settlement business with an owner, a production type, and financial and operating values. TaleWorlds’ version 1.2.7 campaign API documents fields for the workshop’s owner, settlement, type, profit made, expenses, capital, and last run time. These fields show what the game tracks; they do not tell players what a typical workshop earns or which type is most profitable.
There are no reliable current figures here for workshop purchase prices, typical income, or comparative profitability. Treat any specific return you see in a campaign as dependent on its local economy and circumstances, rather than as a guaranteed daily amount.

Use the local economy to narrow your options rather than relying on a fixed ranking. A Gamer Guides walkthrough recommends checking a town’s prosperity and the resources produced by its bound villages, then choosing a business that can use locally available inputs. The walkthrough was last updated on 21 December 2022, so its advice is a strategy starting point, not proof of current balance or a universal rule.
Check the local inputs
Look at what nearby villages produce and whether those goods can support the workshop type you are considering. The walkthrough uses Ocs Hall as an illustration, naming nearby hardwood, clay, and flax villages as possible inputs for wood, pottery, and linen production. That example demonstrates the kind of local-resource check to make; it is not a current recommendation about Ocs Hall or proof that its conditions remain the same.

Check town demand and competition
Consider local prices and demand as well as supply. The walkthrough advises avoiding another workshop of the same type in the same settlement because the two businesses may compete. This is useful caution, but the available material does not quantify the effect or establish that a same-type competitor always makes a workshop unprofitable.
Factor in security and your own effort
A town’s security and your willingness to transport supplies matter. A workshop that depends on inputs you must haul yourself is not fully passive: resupply takes time and exposes the plan to changing market conditions. The walkthrough also reports that sieges halt production and that a town changing hands may cost you the workshop until you retake the settlement. Because that report is from a page last updated 21 December 2022, verify siege and capture behavior in your current game version before making a business plan depend on it.

Can you change a workshop’s production?
The walkthrough says that you can change a purchased workshop’s type by speaking with a worker. TaleWorlds’ version 1.2.7 API confirms that a Workshop object has a production-change method, but that technical reference does not establish the current player-facing dialogue or steps. Check the available interaction in your game before relying on a specific interface path.
A market-driven example: supplying a brewery
The walkthrough describes a situational tactic: find a town where beer is selling at an unusually high price, set a workshop to brewery production, and bring in cheaper grain from another village. The idea is to respond to a local shortage, not to rely on a brewery as a guaranteed earner. It requires the player to transport supplies, and the walkthrough suggests changing production again when the opportunity passes. Its returns depend on campaign markets; current profitability has not been established.

- State-of-the-art rendering technologies combine with a more informative interface, allowing new and advanced players alike to enjoy an unprecedented level of immersion.
How to monitor performance and risk
The walkthrough says workshop performance can be checked in the Other tab of the clan menu. Since its instructions were last updated on 21 December 2022, confirm that the menu label and location still apply in your version. The official 1.2.7 API shows that the game records financial and operating information, but it is a developer reference, not a player-facing guide to interpreting those values.
- Watch whether the business is making a profit or accumulating expenses rather than assuming the type alone determines success.
- Reassess if local input availability or prices change, especially if you are supplying materials yourself.
- Account for settlement safety: the dated walkthrough reports production stops during a siege and possible workshop loss after capture.
If you mean Steam Workshop
Steam Workshop is a mod-publishing platform, separate from the campaign business. TaleWorlds’ official modding documentation describes creating or editing XML task files, using TaleWorlds.MountAndBlade.SteamWorkshop.exe to publish or update a mod, selecting module folders and tags, and enabling Steam Cloud. The documentation states: “Steam Cloud must be enabled for the game in order to successfully upload your mod.” The page concerns mod publishing; paths and tags may change between game versions.
