Neither mouse and keyboard nor controller is the right choice for every FPS player. A mouse gives you a broad physical aiming surface and direct pointer control; a controller offers analog movement and may feel more comfortable, especially on a couch. The better fit depends on the game’s input and matchmaking rules, your comfort, and which device you already know.
How mouse and controller aiming differ
| What matters | Mouse and keyboard | Controller |
|---|---|---|
| Aiming | A mouse moves across a physical surface, allowing broad hand movement and direct aiming. That can help with precision and quick target acquisition. | Aiming through a stick uses a smaller physical range of motion. In some games, aim assistance changes how stick aiming feels and performs. |
| Movement | Keyboard movement is generally binary: a key is pressed or it is not. | Analog sticks and pressure-sensitive inputs can grade movement and allow continuous camera motion. |
| Comfort and setup | Usually needs a desk or another usable surface, which can be less convenient for couch play. | Portable and often comfortable to use from a couch. |
| Game rules | Input support, matchmaking, and platform restrictions vary by game. | Aim assistance and input restrictions vary by game and platform. |
| Familiarity | Experience with mouse and keyboard can affect how natural and effective it feels. | Experience with a controller can make it the more comfortable choice; switching to an unfamiliar device can add usability challenges. |
When mouse and keyboard may suit you
Consider mouse and keyboard if you prefer to aim with your hand across a larger surface, want direct mouse control, or are already comfortable with keyboard movement. These characteristics can make precise or reaction-based aiming tasks easier for some players, but they do not guarantee better results in every game.
When a controller may suit you
A controller may be a better fit if you value graded movement, continuous camera control, portability, or playing comfortably from a couch. If you already have substantial controller experience, that familiarity may matter more to your experience than switching devices for a theoretical aiming advantage.
Aim assist depends on the game
Aim assistance is a game-specific balancing feature, not proof that controllers are universally stronger in shooters. Blizzard describes Overwatch 2 console aim assist as helping bridge the precision difference between mouse and controller. That is Blizzard’s explanation of its own game, not a rule for every FPS or platform. Its policy on unapproved console peripherals also illustrates why players should check the game’s current input and matchmaking rules: Blizzard’s Overwatch 2 statement on unapproved console peripherals.

What research can—and cannot—tell you
Controlled comparisons cover particular games, tasks, devices, and participants. They can illuminate a specific situation, but they do not establish a universal winner for modern FPS games.
A target-acquisition study in Star Wars Battlefront II
Lenz, Chaparro, and Chaparro’s 2008 study compared a mouse, PlayStation 2 controller, and joystick. In its first study, overall performance did not differ significantly among the devices, although participants took fewer shots with a joystick in the sniper-rifle condition. In its second study, participants were expert with their device and joystick users received training. Time to kill did not differ significantly, while mouse users took significantly fewer shots than joystick or controller users. These findings apply to the study’s tasks and conditions, not every FPS: the study’s published report.

Familiarity in Battlefield: Bad Company 2
Gerling, Klauser, and Niesenhaus studied 45 participants playing PC and PlayStation 3 versions of Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Participants assigned to an unfamiliar platform reported more usability problems and feeling more challenged than those on their comfort platform, while their overall experience remained equally positive. The result highlights the role of familiarity in that study; it is not a population-wide estimate of how FPS players perform: the 2011 study.
Aim assistance as a design problem
A 2023 CHI paper examines aim-assistance algorithms that adapt to player ability, including spatial and temporal aiming ability. It provides a design perspective on assistance, not evidence that one input device is always advantaged: the CHI paper.

How to choose for the FPS you play
- Check the game’s current rules. Confirm that it supports your preferred input and check its matchmaking and platform restrictions. Support and policies can vary by game.
- Decide what you value most. Choose the control style that fits your priorities: broad mouse aiming, analog movement, comfort, portability, or familiarity.
- Try both in the same game if possible. Keep the game and settings as similar as you can, then use the input that feels more controllable and comfortable to you.
- Give an unfamiliar device time. A short first session may reflect unfamiliarity rather than the device’s long-term fit; the 2011 study found greater usability challenges among participants using an unfamiliar platform.
Intel’s comparison likewise frames the choice around game genre and personal preference: Intel’s mouse-and-keyboard versus controller overview.
