Spoilers for the entire game. Jimmy causes the Tulpar’s crash, then presents himself as the crew member trying to save everyone. As the story moves between timelines and perspectives, it reveals how his account hides his responsibility for the crash and for the harm done to Anya. The ending leaves Curly in cryosleep and Jimmy apparently dead, but it does not confirm Curly’s rescue.
What is Mouthwashing about?
Mouthwashing is a first-person horror game developed by Wrong Organ and published by CRITICAL REFLEX. Released on Steam on September 26, 2024, it follows the five crew members of the freighter Tulpar after the ship is wrecked and they are stranded in space. Food and power are running low; the ship’s cargo is mouthwash. The official description says rescue is not realistically expected and describes Captain Curly as maimed and unable to speak or move after the crash. Why is the story told out of order?
The game alternates between periods before and after the crash, and shifts what the player knows as it goes. That structure is deliberate: Wrong Organ said the narrative was planned as non-linear, while narrative designer Johanna Kasurinen described the experience as a puzzle. The Washington Post also characterizes it as a story of flashbacks, changing perspectives, and unreliable narration. The Washington Post interview
Early on, Jimmy’s version of events encourages the player to see him as the person trying to manage the crisis. The later revelations change how that account reads. The timeline below puts the major events in order.

What happened before the crash?
Captain Curly and co-pilot Jimmy are friends and colleagues aboard the Tulpar. The relationship matters because Curly’s attempt to handle a serious problem privately becomes part of the story’s failure to protect Anya.
Anya tells Curly what Jimmy did
Anya, the ship’s medic, tells Curly that she is pregnant by Jimmy and that he sexually assaulted her. Curly confronts Jimmy and tells him to take responsibility, but he tries to resolve the matter within the crew rather than ensuring Anya is safe from Jimmy. His intervention does not protect her.

Kasurinen described Curly as “the kind of good-intentioned downplaying that is unfortunately common but very human.” That is not the same as treating Curly’s intentions as an adequate response: the game shows how an attempt to smooth over a crisis can enable further harm. Who caused the Tulpar crash?
Jimmy caused it. Curly is gravely injured in the wreck, while Jimmy survives with the other crew members. In the aftermath, Jimmy takes control and frames himself as the one trying to keep the survivors alive. How does the crew’s situation get worse?
The crew has dwindling supplies, little food, and no expected rescue. The ship is carrying mouthwash rather than useful provisions. Swansea, the mechanic and a recovering alcoholic, drinks it; the bleak, absurd cargo becomes part of the ship’s escalating isolation and conflict. Daisuke is badly injured
Anya remains with the incapacitated Curly in the medical bay. Jimmy tries to get into the utility area and sends Daisuke, an intern, through a damaged vent to reach the bay. Daisuke is badly hurt. Swansea, protective of the intern, kills him to end his suffering. Gamepressure’s plot guide

Anya and Swansea die
Anya dies before the final sequence. After a confrontation, Jimmy kills Swansea. By the end, the other crew members are gone, leaving Jimmy alone with Curly. Gamepressure’s plot guide

Jimmy places Curly in the remaining functioning cryopod. The game then leaves Jimmy out of view; his suicide is strongly implied, but not shown as an explicit confirmation. Curly is left in cryosleep. The ending does not establish whether anyone will find or rescue him. Gamepressure’s plot guide
The act has two different possible meanings. In practical terms, putting Curly in the pod preserves him for a chance of future rescue. As a final gesture, it may also let Jimmy imagine that he has become Curly’s rescuer and made amends. That second reading is an interpretation, not a confirmed redemption: the gesture does not undo Jimmy’s assault of Anya, his cause of the crash, or the crew’s suffering.
Kasurinen put the game’s responsibility theme plainly: “Good intentions don’t mean a whole lot after the situation has already gotten massively out of hand.” Jimmy claims responsibility, but his actions repeatedly avoid it.
