mozalloc.dll is a Mozilla/Gecko application DLL, not a Windows system file. If Windows says mozalloc.dll is missing, not found, damaged, or could not be loaded, repair the Mozilla-based application that owns the file instead of downloading a loose copy.
The most likely solution is a clean reinstall of the affected application from its official publisher. Older Firefox installations commonly contained mozalloc.dll, but another Gecko-based browser, portable application, game, or launcher may also be responsible. Identify the executable first.

1. Identify the application that needs mozalloc.dll
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Do not assume every mozalloc.dll message comes from Firefox. The error may be generated by another program that includes Mozilla or Gecko components.
Read the complete error message and note:
- The program name shown in the dialog
- The executable name, if displayed
- The installation folder
- Whether the message appears during startup, an update, or a game launch
You can also check Event Viewer:
- Press Windows + X and select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Click Find in the right-hand pane.
- Search for
mozalloc.dll. - Open the matching error and note Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and the paths shown.
The normal location is beside the affected program’s executable, such as a Mozilla Firefox installation folder. It should not normally be in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

#1 Best Overall
If the file is found in an unusual folder, especially a temporary directory or a directory unrelated to the application, do not restore or execute it yet. Check the owning executable and scan the system.
2. Reinstall the affected Mozilla-based application
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
For Firefox or another application that has an official installer, reinstall the complete program rather than replacing one DLL.
Before uninstalling
Firefox profile data is normally stored separately from the program files, under:
%APPDATA%MozillaFirefoxProfiles
If Firefox still opens:
- Type
about:profilesin the address bar. - Record the profile locations.
- Back up important profile data before making changes.
Do not delete the profile folder as part of a routine reinstall. Bookmarks, saved passwords, extensions, and settings may be stored there.
Recommended Free Tools
Perform the reinstall
- Close the affected application.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- On Windows 11, select Installed apps. On Windows 10, select Apps & features.
- Find Firefox or the identified Mozilla-based application.
- Select the three-dot menu or the application entry.
- Choose Uninstall and complete the wizard.
- Download the installer from the application developer’s official website.
- Run the installer.
- Start the application and test the action that previously produced the error.
If the application is portable, reinstall or replace the complete portable package. Do not copy only mozalloc.dll into it. Portable applications often depend on a matched group of executable and DLL files.
If reinstalling does not work
A damaged file may remain in the old installation directory.
- Uninstall the application again.
- Open File Explorer.
- Check the old installation path identified in Event Viewer or the error dialog.
- Remove only the leftover program files for that application.
- Do not delete the Firefox profile directory unless you have backed it up.
- Install the official application again.
A successful repair normally means the program starts without the DLL message and the executable loads from its normal installation directory.
For an old Firefox fork or discontinued Gecko application, use that product’s own official installer or archive. Current Firefox files are not guaranteed to match an older fork.

Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Antivirus software may quarantine or remove a private application DLL. That does not automatically mean the detection is a false positive.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions for the date and time when the application stopped working.
- Open any relevant detection.
- Check the file path and the detected item.
- Compare the path with the application’s legitimate installation directory.
If the file came from an official installation and the detection is confirmed to be incorrect, use the available restore or allow option only after verifying the source. If Windows Security detects the file again, do not repeatedly restore it. Remove the installation and reinstall the application from its official source, then run a full scan.
If the file is unsigned, located outside the application directory, or repeatedly recreated after removal, scan the computer and investigate possible malware or tampering instead of treating the missing-DLL message as the main problem.
4. Check for a wrong version or architecture
Time needed: 10 minutes
A 32-bit application needs matching 32-bit program files. A 64-bit application needs matching 64-bit files. The DLL must also match the application release that loads it.

- Used Book in Good Condition
Do not copy mozalloc.dll from:
- Another computer
- A different Firefox release
- A different Gecko-based product
- A DLL download sites site
- A 32-bit installation into a 64-bit application, or the reverse
To check an application’s executable:
- Right-click its shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Select Open File Location.
- Inspect the executable and surrounding files.
- Reinstall that exact application rather than mixing files manually.
Windows may report that mozalloc.dll is “not designed to run on Windows” when the file is corrupted, has the wrong architecture, does not match the executable, or cannot load one of its dependencies. The wording does not prove that Windows itself is missing a component.
5. Repair a separately named Visual C++ dependency
Time needed: 10–15 minutes
Read the entire error message. If it names VCRUNTIME140.dll, VCRUNTIME140_1.dll, or another Visual C++ runtime file, the missing dependency may be the actual failure.
Install or repair the Visual C++ Redistributable only when the error identifies that runtime:
- Check whether the affected application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Download the matching Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Repair if it is already installed.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
A Visual C++ repair does not replace mozalloc.dll and is not the normal fix for a missing Mozilla-private DLL. If the message names only mozalloc.dll, return to the application reinstall procedure.
6. Test Firefox with Troubleshoot Mode or a new profile
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Use this step when Firefox starts inconsistently, works after repeated attempts, or fails after extensions, themes, hardware acceleration, or third-party security software was installed.
If Firefox opens:
- Select the menu button.
- Select Help.
- Choose Troubleshoot Mode.
- Confirm the restart.
- Test Firefox without extensions and custom themes enabled.
If the problem disappears in Troubleshoot Mode, disable extensions and themes individually, then restart Firefox normally after each change.
If the problem continues, test with a separate profile:
- Type
about:profilesin Firefox. - Select Create a New Profile.
- Start Firefox with the new profile.
- Test whether the application loads.
Do not immediately delete the old profile. If bookmarks or passwords appear missing, return to the original profile and check the profile folders before importing or removing anything.
A profile issue can explain startup failures, but it does not restore a missing application DLL. If the file itself is absent from the installation directory, reinstall the application.
7. Repair Windows components only for broader Windows problems
Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus restart time
mozalloc.dll is not normally protected by Windows, so System File Checker will not usually restore it. Use DISM and SFC when Windows itself shows broader corruption, several unrelated applications fail, or system components behave abnormally.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Run the commands in this order. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, test Windows and the application again. If both commands complete without resolving the DLL message, reinstall the Mozilla-based application rather than repeating them indefinitely.
Repeating SFC and DISM can be tedious when the real issue is an incomplete application install. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention; its full version performs repairs, but it is not required and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that program owns mozalloc.dll.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute8. Update drivers only when the evidence points to a driver
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A graphics, security, or injected third-party module can interfere with Firefox or another Gecko-based application, but a driver update is not the first-line repair for a missing mozalloc.dll.
Check Windows’ driver status:
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Network adapters, and any category related to the failing application.
- Right-click a device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the provider and date.
- Use Update Driver only when the device or Event Viewer identifies it as relevant.
For a clean graphics-driver repair, download the driver from the hardware manufacturer, uninstall the existing driver only when the manufacturer’s instructions require it, restart, and install the matching 32-bit or 64-bit package.
Manually hunting through hardware pages can mean guessing which of many drivers is stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show driver problems, while its full version installs updates; it is optional, and a driver change will not replace the application files that provide mozalloc.dll.
Windows Features are generally unrelated to this error. Do not enable or disable .NET Framework, legacy components, or media features as a routine response unless the complete error specifically identifies that Windows feature as a dependency.
Why downloading mozalloc.dll separately is unsafe
Avoid DLL download sites sites and loose files copied from search results. A downloaded DLL may be:
- Modified or malicious
- The wrong architecture
- From an incompatible application release
- Missing its matching dependencies
- Placed where Windows loads it before the legitimate application copy
Windows DLL search behavior can cause an unintended copy to load from an unsafe directory. Copying the file to System32 or SysWOW64 can also create conflicts that survive future application updates.
Use the affected application’s official installer instead. For Firefox, the official Mozilla installer and clean-reinstall process provide the complete, matching program files. For another product, use that product’s official installer or archive.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
Do not run:
regsvr32 mozalloc.dll
as a general repair. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A private runtime DLL such as mozalloc.dll is normally loaded directly by the application and does not need system registration.

FAQ
Is mozalloc.dll part of Windows?
No. Historical Mozilla installation records place it in the application’s installation directory. It is not a normal Windows component and should not be copied to System32.
Which program installed mozalloc.dll?
Older Firefox builds commonly used it, and other Gecko-based applications may also contain it. Identify the executable and installation path before choosing a repair.
Is mozalloc.dll still used by current Firefox?
Historical records clearly document the file in older Firefox builds. Do not assume that every current Firefox installer contains the same standalone DLL. Repair the specific build that produced the error.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCan I fix the error by installing DirectX or .NET?
Not normally. Those are not first-line fixes for a Mozilla-private DLL. Follow the complete error text and reinstall the application that owns the file.
Will reinstalling Firefox delete my bookmarks and passwords?
Firefox profile data is stored separately from the program files, but back it up before uninstalling or changing profiles. Do not delete the profile directory during a routine reinstall.
What information should I collect if the error remains?
Record the complete error text, executable name, full installation path, Windows version, application version, 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, antivirus action, and the relevant Event Viewer entry. This information distinguishes a missing file from a mismatched dependency, quarantine event, or unrelated application failure.
