rasrad.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component used by Remote Access and RADIUS services. If Windows says it is missing or could not be loaded, restore Windows or the affected Remote Access role rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
The file is described as the Remote Access Service NT RADIUS client module. Microsoft documents it as the provider used by Windows Remote Access for RADIUS Authentication and RADIUS Accounting.
Its normal documented location is:
%SystemRoot%System32rasrad.dll
RAS supports remote-access functions such as dial-up, VPN, and related WAN connectivity. On Windows Server, these capabilities are provided through the Remote Access role, including DirectAccess and VPN services.
This is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET file, or game-specific dependency. Microsoft does not provide a standalone current download for rasrad.dll.

Fix 1: Run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC
This is the safest first repair when the file is missing from a normal Windows installation or the problem began after system damage.
1. Install pending updates
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
2. Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the operation to finish. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which SFC uses as a source for clean system files.
3. Run System File Checker
In the same administrator Command Prompt, run:
sfc /scannow
Do not close the window until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows when it finishes.

How to tell whether it worked
Test the VPN, Remote Access service, or program that produced the error. A successful repair normally means the error no longer appears and the related Windows function starts normally.
If SFC reports that it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, continue to the next section. Do not download a replacement from a DLL website.
Repeating SFC without knowing whether the component store is healthy rarely adds useful information. Outbyte PC Repair can show what is wrong automatically instead of making you hunt through repair results and guess which system component changed; its free scan identifies issues, while repair features require the full version. It is optional, and Windows repair or reinstalling the affected role remains the definitive path.
Fix 2: Repair DISM with matching Windows installation media
If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, provide a repair source from installation media that matches the installed system.
The source must match the installed Windows edition, language, architecture, and servicing level. A source from a different Windows release can leave the system in a worse state or fail without restoring the correct component.
After connecting or mounting the correct media, identify its Windows source path. Microsoft’s example uses:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the matching Windows folder on your repair media.
Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart and test again.
If the repair source does not work, use System Restore when the failure clearly began after a recent driver, update, or application change:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Select Next, review the affected changes, and choose Finish.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings without removing personal files, although recently installed applications or drivers may be affected.
If no matching source works, an in-place Windows repair is safer than replacing only rasrad.dll. It rebuilds Windows while preserving the existing installation when the supported repair process is followed.

Fix 3: Check the Windows Server Remote Access role
This step applies mainly to Windows Server systems configured for VPN, routing, dial-up, DirectAccess, or RADIUS authentication.
Do not blindly remove and reinstall a production role. First record the existing RRAS configuration, authentication settings, certificates, policies, and network layout.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck the role in Server Manager
- Open Server Manager.
- Select Manage.
- Choose Remove Roles and Features only if you have documented the current configuration and intend to repair the deployment.
- Review the Remote Access role and its installed role services.
- Check Tools > Routing and Remote Access.
- Review the service status and recent events.
- Open Event Viewer and inspect Windows Logs > System and the Remote Access-related logs for the first failure.
For a role that is missing or incompletely installed, Microsoft documents these PowerShell commands.
To install the Remote Access role:
Install-WindowsFeature RemoteAccess -IncludeManagementTools
For a VPN deployment:
Install-WindowsFeature DirectAccess-VPN -IncludeManagementTools
Run PowerShell as administrator. These commands install role components; they do not automatically recreate every production configuration. Reapply or restore the documented RRAS configuration only after confirming the role installation completed successfully.
If the role installs but the error remains, identify the service or executable loading the DLL. A RADIUS authentication failure, certificate problem, firewall issue, or stopped service can occur independently of a missing rasrad.dll.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
If the file disappeared immediately after a scan, Windows Security may have quarantined it.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection associated with
rasrad.dll. - Review the path, detection name, and action taken.
Restore or allow the file only when all of the following are true:
- The path is the expected Windows directory.
- The file is verified as Microsoft-signed.
- The detection is demonstrably a false positive.
- A current system scan does not show related suspicious activity.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file places it back where Defender can detect it again. If the file is unsigned, sits in an application folder, or is accompanied by suspicious behavior, do not restore it. Run a full scan and repair Windows instead.
Fix 5: Verify the path and signature
A file named rasrad.dll is not automatically legitimate.
The expected location is:
C:WindowsSystem32rasrad.dll
The Windows directory may use a different drive or folder name, so %SystemRoot%System32rasrad.dll is the more reliable form.
To inspect a local file:
- Browse to the file in File Explorer.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Select the signer and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid Microsoft signature.
Also check whether another copy exists in a program folder, temporary directory, Downloads folder, or user profile. A same-named file outside the Windows directory should be treated as suspicious until scanned and verified.
Do not choose a replacement based only on whether it is labeled “32-bit” or “64-bit.” Public catalogs list a 32-bit XP-era copy, but Microsoft does not publish a dependable public architecture and version matrix for every current Windows release. System32 naming also does not resolve architecture in every Windows scenario because filesystem redirection can apply.
Fix 6: Do not register or manually copy the DLL
regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft’s RAS documentation describes rasrad.dll as a configured RAS provider, not as a component that normally needs manual registration.

Therefore, this is not a normal fix:

If Windows repair succeeds but one older application still reports the error, the program may be trying to load an obsolete RAS component incorrectly.
Find the originating process:
- Open Event Viewer and review errors recorded at the time of launch.
- Open Reliability Monitor by searching for
reliability. - Check View reliability history for the application failure.
- Review the application’s installation directory and publisher information.
- Update the program from its official vendor source or remove it if it is no longer supported.
Do not assume that a RAS or RADIUS-related error means rasrad.dll itself is missing. Configuration, authentication, networking, service startup, or an incompatible third-party VPN client can generate separate failures.
For driver-related failures, check Windows Update first:
Recommended Free Tools
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Outbyte Driver Updater can identify outdated drivers without making you compare versions across many hardware entries; its free scan shows the detected issues, while driver installation requires the full version. It is optional, and a driver update will not replace a missing Windows system file.
Why random DLL downloads are the wrong fix
Avoid sites offering individual rasrad.dll downloads. They can provide:
- A file from the wrong Windows release
- An incompatible 32-bit or 64-bit build
- A modified or malicious DLL
- A file with missing dependencies
- A copy that does not repair the damaged component store
The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM and SFC, matching Microsoft installation media, System Restore, and the Microsoft Remote Access role installation process. There is no Microsoft Redistributable package for this file.
FAQ
Is rasrad.dll legitimate?
Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows Remote Access component associated with RADIUS authentication and accounting.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Where should rasrad.dll be located?
Microsoft documents it under:
%SystemRoot%System32rasrad.dll
A copy elsewhere is not automatically malicious, but it requires verification.
Is it a 32-bit or 64-bit DLL?
Historical public catalogs list a 32-bit XP-era copy. That does not establish the correct architecture for every current Windows installation. Do not substitute a file based on architecture labels alone.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No evidence connects those runtimes to rasrad.dll. They are not an evidence-based fix for this error.
Does Windows 11 always include this file?
Do not assume that every Windows edition ships the same RAS files. A missing file on a modern consumer PC may indicate damaged Windows, an obsolete application, or a misleading dependency error. Identify the process that reports the failure.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What if SFC cannot repair it?
Run DISM first, use a matching repair source, try System Restore when appropriate, and consider an in-place Windows repair. On Windows Server, also repair the Remote Access role.
Should I restore it from antivirus quarantine?
Only after verifying the path, Microsoft signature, detection, and surrounding system state. Never restore an unsigned or suspicious copy simply because its filename matches.
