- Does the error mention Thunderbird, its installer, or its updater?
- Does it appear when Thunderbird starts, during an update, or while installing Thunderbird?
- Is the file expected under the Thunderbird installation folder?
- Is Thunderbird still running in Task Manager?
- Are Skype, Logitech webcam software, antivirus, backup software, or another mail program active?
- Is the computer running 32-bit or 64-bit Windows?
- Was the file quarantined by antivirus software?
- Is the file instead appearing under
%TEMP%,%AppData%, orC:WindowsSystem32?
The safest repair is usually to close Thunderbird and programs that may use Windows MAPI, restart Windows, then reinstall Thunderbird from its official website. Do not begin by copying a replacement DLL into a Windows system folder.

What mozmapi32.dll does
mozmapi32.dll is a Thunderbird component used for Windows MAPI integration. MAPI is the Windows messaging interface that lets applications use a default mail client and supports actions such as sending a file through Send to > Mail recipient.
Mozilla documentation and historical Bugzilla reports place the file in the Thunderbird program directory, commonly:

C:Program FilesMozilla ThunderbirdmozMapi32.dll
It is not a Windows system DLL, Visual C++ runtime file, DirectX component, or general game dependency. It should normally be installed by Thunderbird itself.
The name contains Mapi32 because the component belongs to Thunderbird’s 32-bit-era Windows MAPI integration. Do not assume that 64-bit Windows means every Thunderbird component must be a 64-bit DLL. Historical Mozilla records concern x86-era Thunderbird builds, and a supplied claim about a specific 64-bit version, file size, or internal version number is not authoritative.

The exact wording matters. An installer error usually points to a locked or damaged Thunderbird installation. A file found in an unexpected folder deserves a security check before any repair.
Fix 1: Close Thunderbird and restart Windows
This is the fastest fix for a locked file.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select Processes or Details.
- Find every
thunderbird.exeprocess. - Select each process and choose End task.
- Close Skype, Logitech webcam utilities, mail clients, backup tools, indexing utilities, and other programs that may access mail integration.
- Check the notification area near the clock for programs that remain active, then exit them.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Thunderbird installer or updater again.
If the installation completes, open Thunderbird and test both normal mail functions and Send to > Mail recipient from File Explorer.
A historical Mozilla record associated this failure with Logitech QuickCam software, Skype, multiple Thunderbird processes, and the updater itself. Those reports concern older Thunderbird environments and do not prove that any one of these programs is causing a current failure, but they remain useful file-lock checks.
If another Windows user is signed in, sign out that account or restart the computer. A second user session may still have Thunderbird open.

Fix 2: Reinstall Thunderbird over the existing installation
If the DLL is missing, damaged, or an update was interrupted, reinstall Thunderbird from the official Thunderbird desktop download page. Select the Windows package that matches the operating system and deployment method. The current download choices include Windows 64-bit, Windows 32-bit, MSI, and legacy Windows options.

Before reinstalling, protect the Thunderbird profile.
- Press
Windows+R. - Enter:
%APPDATA%Thunderbird
- Press Enter.
- Copy the
Thunderbirdfolder to an external drive or another safe location. - Close the folder and all Thunderbird processes.
- Download the installer from the official Thunderbird website.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Install over the existing Thunderbird program directory when the installer offers that path.
- Start Thunderbird and confirm that your accounts, messages, address books, and settings remain available.
Thunderbird’s program files and user profile are separate. Reinstalling the program does not normally delete the profile, but deleting profile files manually can remove messages, passwords, settings, and other data. Do not uninstall or delete the profile merely because mozmapi32.dll is missing.
If the installer still reports that the file is in use, restart again and perform the installation after a Windows clean boot. A clean boot prevents many nonessential startup programs from loading. Restore normal startup after the installation finishes.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and the file path
Security software can quarantine or block an application file. Treat this as a possibility, not proof that mozmapi32.dll commonly triggers false positives.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving Thunderbird or
mozmapi32.dll. - Do not restore the file automatically.
- First confirm that the file belongs to the official Thunderbird installation directory.
- If the detection is confirmed as a false positive, use the security product’s restore process and reinstall Thunderbird from the official source.
- If the file is in
%TEMP%,%AppData%, or an arbitrary directory, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.
A legitimate Thunderbird component should not need to be copied into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. An unexpected path changes the diagnosis from a normal Thunderbird repair to a possible unwanted or malicious program.

Fix 4: Check Windows architecture without forcing a DLL match
Windows 11 is generally 64-bit, while Windows 10 may be 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Check System type under Device specifications.
Do not download a DLL merely because a website labels it “64-bit” or lists a particular version number. Historical Mozilla records describe the relevant MAPI integration in x86-era Thunderbird builds, and the commonly repeated metadata for this file is not verified as a current Thunderbird package detail.
Install the Thunderbird build intended for your operating system instead of mixing a DLL from another release. mozMapi32.dll may be paired with related MAPI files, so replacing only one file can leave the installation inconsistent.

Because mozmapi32.dll belongs to Thunderbird rather than Windows, Windows repair commands will not normally recreate it. Use them when other Windows components are also failing, system files are damaged, or Windows itself is behaving abnormally.
Run DISM first
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and retry the Thunderbird installation.
If DISM reports that it cannot repair the image, install pending Windows updates, restart, and run the command again. If SFC finds and repairs corrupted files but Thunderbird still reports a missing DLL, reinstall Thunderbird because the missing file is application-owned.

Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without checking what changed makes troubleshooting harder. regsvr32 is not a general missing-DLL repair command. It applies to DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer.
Do not run this as a routine fix:
regsvr32 mozmapi32.dll
A registration error does not mean the DLL is missing or that Thunderbird is repaired. Mozilla used registration commands in a special developer-build setup involving MapiProxy_InUse.dll; that does not make regsvr32 appropriate for every installed Thunderbird DLL.
If Thunderbird installs but Send to > Mail recipient does not work, check Settings > Apps > Default apps and confirm that Thunderbird is selected for the relevant mail association. That is a MAPI or default-mail configuration issue, not necessarily a missing-file problem.

A driver update is not a normal fix for mozmapi32.dll. Device Manager is relevant only if the same incident also includes a webcam, network adapter, storage device, or other hardware problem.
To check:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the failing hardware.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties and review the Device status message.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver only when Windows or the hardware manufacturer provides a suitable driver.
- Restart Windows and retest.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify them, while driver installation is handled by the full version; this does not replace reinstalling Thunderbird, which remains the definitive fix for a Thunderbird-owned DLL.
What not to do
Do not download mozmapi32.dll from a random DLL website. A manually downloaded file may contain malware, belong to another Thunderbird release, use the wrong architecture, or fail because related MAPI files are also damaged. Copying it into System32 can create a second, misleading problem.
Do not rename or delete the Thunderbird profile while troubleshooting the installer. Do not copy a DLL from another computer, another Thunderbird version, or another user’s installation.

Do not add a Windows optional feature to solve this error. Open Settings > System > Optional features only when a specific Windows component is missing and the error identifies that component. mozmapi32.dll is supplied by Thunderbird, not by an optional Windows feature.

If the error still remains
Collect these details before escalating:
- The complete error message
- The full path shown in the error
- Whether it occurs during launch, update, or installation
- The Thunderbird version and installer type
- The Windows version and system type
- Whether another Thunderbird process is visible in Task Manager
- Antivirus quarantine or protection-history results
- Whether the file exists in the Thunderbird directory
- Whether a clean boot changes the result
If every official reinstall fails, contact Mozilla support with that information. Use System Restore only as a last-resort recovery step when the problem began after a known system change and normal Thunderbird repair has failed.
FAQ
Is mozmapi32.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with Thunderbird’s Windows MAPI integration and should not normally be stored in System32 or SysWOW64.
Can I fix it by copying the DLL into Thunderbird’s folder?
That is unsafe and unreliable. Reinstall Thunderbird so the complete, matching set of program files is restored.
Will reinstalling Thunderbird delete my email?
The Thunderbird program and profile are separate, but back up %APPDATA%Thunderbird before major repairs. Never delete the profile unless you intentionally want to remove its data.

A previous Thunderbird process, another Windows user session, or software using MAPI may still have the DLL open. Restarting Windows and rerunning the official installer usually addresses that condition.
Do I need the 64-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows?
Do not choose a DLL by a website’s architecture label. Install the Thunderbird build appropriate for Windows and let its installer supply the matching files.
Is Logitech or Skype definitely the cause?
No. Mozilla documented them as historical file-locking causes. They are checks to perform, not a confirmed diagnosis for every current system.
