The 60-second answer
srclient.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called the System Restore client library. It allows installers and applications to call System Restore functions, including creating, completing, cancelling, and removing restore points.
Do not download a replacement from a random DLL website. The safest first repair is to run Microsoft’s Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool, followed by System File Checker, from an elevated Command Prompt:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete. If only one application fails, repair or reinstall that application from its publisher after repairing Windows.
What is srclient.dll?
srclient.dll is part of the Microsoft Windows Operating System. Its description may appear as “Microsoft Windows System Restore Client Library” or “SR CLIENT DLL,” and its publisher should be Microsoft Corporation when you inspect a genuine Windows copy.
Applications and installers load this library when they need to use the System Restore client API. An installer may attempt to create a restore point before changing system files, drivers, or settings. If the Windows component is missing or damaged, the installer can fail even though the application itself is not the original cause.
Microsoft documents applications loading the library to call System Restore functions such as SRSetRestorePoint. The file is not:
- A Visual C++ Redistributable component
- A DirectX file
- A .NET assembly
- A graphics driver
- A game-specific runtime
- A general-purpose application DLL
System Restore may be unavailable on some Windows Server installations because that feature is not present there. That is different from a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 client installation losing a protected system file.
Where should srclient.dll be located?
On supported Windows client installations, the expected locations are:
C:WindowsSystem32srclient.dllC:WindowsSysWOW64srclient.dllon 64-bit Windows
The folder names can be confusing. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. System32 does not mean that the folder contains only 32-bit files.
A 32-bit Windows installation generally uses the Windows system directory for its 32-bit system files. Do not copy a file between these directories based only on its name. The correct architecture depends on the Windows installation and the application loading the library.
File versions and sizes vary by Windows release, architecture, servicing branch, and installed updates. A size or version found in an old Windows reference is not a universal target for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
What usually causes the error?
The message names srclient.dll, but that does not always prove that this file alone is missing. Windows may display a DLL error when a dependency cannot be loaded, when the application searches the wrong directory, or when the file exists but is corrupt.
Common causes include:
- Windows component or system-file corruption
- An interrupted update or failed servicing operation
- A damaged application installer
- Antivirus or security software quarantine
- Aggressive cleanup or debloating software
- Malware damage or an altered Windows image
- A missing dependency behind the “specified module could not be found” message
- A recent driver, update, or software change
An installer that creates a restore point can expose the problem first. That does not necessarily mean the installer installed srclient.dll or that the application is responsible for the missing Windows file.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the best first repair when the file is absent from the Windows directory, more than one application is affected, or Windows reports other missing or corrupted components.
Recommended Free Tools
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses the repaired component store to check protected Windows files and replace damaged copies. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
1. Install pending Windows updates
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
Try the affected application once Windows starts again. If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
2. Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
Use Command Prompt rather than a normal, non-elevated window. Without administrator permissions, the repair may fail or be unable to replace protected files.
3. Run DISM
Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Leave the window open while it runs. The process can appear paused at a percentage for some time. Wait for a completion message before closing it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf DISM reports that the restore operation completed successfully, continue with SFC. If it reports that repair source files could not be found, skip to the recovery section below rather than copying a DLL from the internet.
4. Run System File Checker
After DISM finishes, enter:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. The result will generally indicate whether Windows found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or found files it could not repair.
Restart the computer:
shutdown /r /t 0
Then launch the program or installer again.
What success looks like
The repair worked if:
- The application starts without the
srclient.dllmessage. - The installer proceeds past the point where it previously failed.
- The expected Windows copy is present after the restart.
- SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files and the error no longer returns.
If SFC says it repaired files but the same application still fails, continue with the application repair and dependency checks. A repaired system file does not automatically repair a damaged application installation.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork when you are repeatedly hunting through Windows repair results and are unsure what changed. Its free scan shows what it identifies, while the repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and DISM plus SFC remain the appropriate built-in repair path.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If only one program fails and other Windows applications work normally, the application or its installer may be damaged. This is especially likely when the error appears immediately after an incomplete installation, update, migration, or program removal.
Repair an application in Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
Windows will attempt to repair the application without removing its data. Start the program again when the operation completes.
Some applications do not provide an Advanced options page. For those programs:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
Reinstall an application or installer
If repair does not help:
- Back up any application data that is not synchronized.
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download a fresh installer from the application publisher’s official website.
- Run the installer as an administrator if its publisher recommends that.
- Test the application after installation.
If the error happens during installation, the downloaded installer may be incomplete or damaged. Obtain a fresh copy from the publisher rather than inserting srclient.dll into the installer directory.
For a game, use the launcher’s official Verify, Repair, or equivalent option before reinstalling the entire game. There is no verified general list of games that require this Windows library. A game-specific error does not make srclient.dll a game file.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a Windows file after detecting suspected tampering or a false positive. Do not restore it automatically.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the application.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any event that refers to
srclient.dll. - Check the path, detection name, and action taken.
A genuine Windows copy should be under the Windows directory, normally in System32 or SysWOW64 as appropriate. A copy in a temporary folder, an application directory, or a user profile deserves additional investigation.
Restore or allow the file only when its location, publisher, and authenticity are consistent with a genuine Windows component and a reputable security product confirms that the detection is a false positive. Otherwise, leave it quarantined and repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
If the file is restored and immediately quarantined again, do not repeatedly disable protection. That behavior indicates that the security product still considers the file unsafe or that something is modifying it.
Run a full security scan. If the file has appeared outside the Windows directory, investigate possible malware or tampering before attempting further manual repairs.

Fix 4: Use System Restore after a recent change
If the problem began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, cleanup operation, or software change, System Restore may return system files and settings to an earlier state.
System Restore is not guaranteed to be available. It depends on the Windows configuration and whether a usable restore point exists.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the operation.
System Restore normally does not remove personal files, but it can roll back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs. If no restore point exists, return to DISM/SFC and the Windows recovery options instead.
Fix 5: Check drivers after a driver-related change
A driver does not normally install srclient.dll, but a failed driver update can damage servicing, application startup, or system dependencies. Use this path when the error began immediately after installing or updating a device driver.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to the recently changed device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the driver provider and date.
- Select Roll Back Driver if the button is available and the problem began after an update.
- Otherwise select Update Driver and follow the prompts.
For a clean replacement, obtain the driver from the computer, motherboard, or device manufacturer. Do not use an arbitrary driver intended for another model or Windows architecture.
Outbyte Driver Updater can help when you are guessing which of many drivers is stale or manually repeating updates without knowing what changed. Its free scan identifies the drivers it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace DISM/SFC or the device manufacturer’s support.

A “not found” message can be caused by a missing dependency or an incorrect application path, even when srclient.dll exists.
Check the expected folders in File Explorer:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Open
C:WindowsSystem32. - Search for
srclient.dll. - On 64-bit Windows, also check
C:WindowsSysWOW64. - Right-click any copy found.
- Select Properties.
- Review the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
Do not use file size or an old version number as the sole authenticity test. Windows updates can change system files.
If the file exists in the expected location but an application still reports “The specified module could not be found,” one of its dependent DLLs may be missing or corrupt. This is a loader problem, not necessarily a missing srclient.dll problem. DISM and SFC are safer first steps than copying files manually. The application’s publisher may also need to inspect its installer, search path, and dependencies.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why regsvr32 is not the fix
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 srclient.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. srclient.dll is an API library used by applications to call System Restore functions; it is not documented as a self-registering COM component.
Running regsvr32 commonly produces an entry-point or registration error. It does not restore a missing Windows component, repair the component store, or fix a missing dependency. Use DISM and SFC instead.
Why downloading srclient.dll is unsafe
There is no Microsoft srclient.dll redistributable or standalone official download package for normal Windows repair.
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- The wrong Windows version
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A modified or malicious file
- A file with an invalid signature
- A copy that does not match the component store
- A replacement that hides the underlying corruption
Even if a manually copied file makes one message disappear, the Windows installation can remain damaged. It can also create a version mismatch that causes later servicing problems.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, Windows recovery, or an official in-place repair installation instead.
Fix 7: Repair Windows when DISM and SFC cannot
If DISM cannot find source files, SFC cannot repair all protected files, or many Windows components are affected, the installation may be badly damaged.
Before proceeding, back up important documents and confirm that you have access to application installers and required sign-in information.
Try these options in order:
- Uninstall a recent Windows update if the issue began directly after that update.
- Use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.
- Start Windows recovery options and follow Microsoft’s recommended repair path.
- Perform an in-place repair installation using official Windows installation media when appropriate.
- Use Reset this PC or reinstall Windows only after understanding the effect on applications and files.
An in-place repair installation can replace damaged Windows components while preserving personal files and, depending on the chosen method, applications. Follow the installation media instructions carefully and select the option that preserves the content you need.

What to collect if the error continues
Record the following before contacting Microsoft, the application publisher, or a technician:
- Windows edition and build
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The exact error text
- The affected program or installer
- Whether other applications are affected
- Whether

- What changed immediately before the problem
- DISM’s final result
- SFC’s final result
- Relevant Windows, CBS, antivirus, or application logs
This information distinguishes a missing Windows component from a damaged installer, a dependency failure, a quarantine event, or an application search-path problem.
Frequently asked questions
Is srclient.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is the Windows System Restore client library, supplied as part of the Microsoft Windows Operating System.
Does srclient.dll belong to a game?
Not normally. A game or installer may load the Windows System Restore API, but that does not make the library a game component.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET?
No. Those packages are not general fixes for srclient.dll. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC first, then repair the application that reports the error.
Can I copy srclient.dll from another computer?
Do not use that as a routine repair. Windows versions, architectures, servicing levels, and component-store contents can differ. Let Windows repair its own protected files.
Does System Restore need to be enabled?
The library is a Windows component, but System Restore availability depends on Windows configuration and whether protection and restore points are available. A missing restore point does not justify downloading the DLL.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file exists?
The message can refer to a dependent DLL, an invalid application path, or a damaged installation. Run DISM and SFC, then repair the affected application and investigate its dependencies if necessary.
Will regsvr32 fix it?
No. srclient.dll is not a routine self-registering COM DLL. regsvr32 is not a replacement for component repair.
What is the safest first step?
Install pending Windows updates, run DISM followed by SFC from an administrator Command Prompt, restart, and then repair the affected application if it is still the only program that fails.
