For a team decision today, choose established Pikachu by default. Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu have been revealed for Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves, but no battle statistics, moves, abilities, typing details, availability or competitive results have been published. Any claim that either new character is stronger is speculation until the developers provide a gameplay profile.
The useful answer is therefore not a design-based winner. It is a certainty-based choice: Pikachu is the known quantity, while Windychu and Wavychu are intriguing but unevaluated possibilities.

What the announcement actually confirms
The official Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves announcement describes the games as all-new entries in the Pokémon video game series. They are planned for simultaneous worldwide release in 2027, exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2. The setting is an open world built around islands and ocean, and the announcement says players will be able to team up with Pokémon during the adventure.
That establishes a future game context for the new Pikachu characters, not a battle profile. The same page identifies three first partners:

| Pombon | Fire | Blaze | 0.4 m | 6.7 kg |
| Gecqua | Water | Torrent | 0.3 m | 4.3 kg |
Those measurements and abilities belong to the announced first partners, not to Windychu, Wavychu or Pikachu. They cannot be used to infer the new characters’ strength.
Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu are the announced names
The announcement says the latest video showed “some Pikachu with a brand-new look” and asks, “Just how could these Pikachu be involved in your adventure? Look forward to future announcements.” It names the two characters Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu.
“Brand-new look” confirms a visual distinction. It does not confirm a new species, regional form, evolution, alternate form, special battle classification or separate Pokédex entry. Those are all possibilities readers may discuss, but none is established by the announcement.

Are Windychu and Wavychu playable Pokémon?
Not yet on the available information. The trailer appearance proves that they exist in the revealed material; it does not say that either one can be caught, received, used in battles or placed in the party.
The official wording deliberately leaves their role open: “How could these Pikachu be involved in your adventure?” That could eventually describe ordinary team members, story characters, special partners, event Pokémon, ride companions or something else. Until a later announcement gives an encounter method or party rule, “playable” is an unanswered question.
The page also warns that its screenshots and footage show a product in development and that the actual gameplay experience may vary. A scene in a reveal video should not be treated as proof of a final mechanic.
What is known about Pikachu for this comparison?
Pikachu is the established reference point because it is an existing Pokémon rather than an unrevealed character. That makes it the safer team conversation: players understand what they are selecting when a game makes Pikachu available, while the two new characters have no published battle data.
However, “Pikachu is known” does not mean every detail is identical across every Pokémon game. A specific title can change encounter locations, level curves, move access, abilities, available forms and team restrictions. For Winds and Waves, the announcement has not yet supplied those game-specific details for Pikachu either.

The current comparison therefore has one supported axis: certainty. Pikachu is the established option; Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu are unrevealed in gameplay terms.
Should you choose Pikachu, Mr. Windychu or Ms. Wavychu?
If you are planning a team before release
Plan around Pikachu only if you need a known quantity, and keep a flexible slot for one of the new characters if their eventual profiles appeal to your team. Do not discard a team role, type balance or coverage plan on the assumption that a new design must be stronger.
A sensible pre-release plan has two versions:
- Known plan: build around Pokémon whose availability and battle information are confirmed, using Pikachu only when the game confirms it can join the party.
- Flexible plan: reserve one slot for Windychu or Wavychu, then make the choice after their type, ability, stats and acquisition method are announced.
This approach prevents a reveal from forcing you to rebuild an entire six-Pokémon team around a character that may not be obtainable.
If you care most about the character’s appearance
Choose the design you prefer once the game confirms that the character is usable. A visual preference is a valid reason to use a Pokémon in a story playthrough, but it is not evidence of battle superiority. The announcement gives no information that would let a player rank Mr. Windychu above Ms. Wavychu on performance.
If you care about competitive battles
Wait for official mechanics and actual battle data. Competitive value depends on more than a species name or silhouette. A Pokémon with excellent offensive numbers can still be a poor fit if its moves, ability, speed tier, defensive profile or availability work against the format. None of those Windychu or Wavychu details has been published.
If you want the safest story-playthrough choice
Pikachu is the conservative answer only after the game confirms that it can be obtained and used in the party. Windychu and Wavychu could be equally good or better, but there is currently no evidence to justify choosing them over a known option.
The comparison that will decide the eventual winner
When gameplay information arrives, compare all three candidates using the same questions. A name, costume or trailer pose should never substitute for these checks.

How to fit any of them into a six-Pokémon team
Once the game reveals a usable profile, evaluate the candidate as one member of a six-Pokémon roster rather than as a standalone mascot.
1. Identify the job the candidate performs
Decide whether the Pokémon is meant to deal physical damage, deal special damage, move first, absorb hits, spread status, provide field utility or cover a particular weakness. Base stats and available moves should support that job. If the profile does not clearly support the intended role, the design alone is not a reason to keep it.
2. Map weaknesses against the rest of the party
Write down every confirmed weakness and resistance, then compare it with the five other planned members. One additional weakness may be manageable when teammates switch safely into it; repeated weaknesses can make a team fragile. This check matters more than a mascot’s popularity.

List the attacks the Pokémon can legally learn in the game and identify which opposing types they threaten. A candidate that duplicates another teammate’s attacks may add less value than one that covers a gap, even when both have similar headline power.
4. Account for timing
Record when the Pokémon becomes available, its joining level and any level or item requirement for its final form. A late encounter can still be excellent for the endgame, but it cannot fill an early route’s role. Conversely, an early option may be useful during the story even if another candidate has a higher eventual ceiling.
5. Recheck the ability in actual team context
An ability is valuable only when the team can trigger or exploit it. Verify its exact effect and interactions instead of assuming that a familiar-sounding name works like an ability from another game.
6. Test the complete roster for overlap
After selecting one candidate, examine the other five slots. Look for duplicate roles, shared weaknesses, missing answers to common opponents and a lack of reliable switching options. The better choice is the one that improves the whole roster.

What future announcements need to reveal
A useful follow-up announcement would answer the questions below in roughly this order:
Rank #4
- CAPTAIN PIKACHU: Get ready to set sail with Captain Pikachu
- SPECIAL HAT: 8-inch Pokémon plush is super soft and wears a special captain’s hat
- AUTHENTIC DETAILS: Plush looks like it jumped right out of the Pokémon Animated Series

- Are Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu ordinary party Pokémon, temporary partners, story characters or another category?
- Can players obtain them in both Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves, and by what method?
- What are their confirmed types, abilities and base stats?
- Do they have unique moves, forms, evolutions or special battle mechanics?
- At what point in the adventure can each one join, and at what level?
- Are either character version-exclusive?
- Do the final games preserve the mechanics shown in the development footage?
Only after those answers are available can a comparison move from appearance and speculation to team-building advice.
Common mistakes when judging the new Pikachu designs
Assuming a new look means a new type
The announcement confirms a new appearance, not a type change. Do not assign weaknesses or resistances until an official profile does so.
Treating trailer presence as proof of capture
A Pokémon can appear in a video without being encounterable or eligible for a party slot. Wait for an explicit gameplay explanation.

“Mr.” and “Ms.” are part of the announced names. They do not indicate gender mechanics, statistics, rank or battle role.
Using the first partners as a benchmark
Browt, Pombon and Gecqua have published abilities, heights and weights, but those figures describe the starters. They provide no evidence about either new Pikachu.
Confusing story value with competitive value
A character can be memorable or useful during exploration without being optimal in a competitive format. Keep those judgments separate until the relevant rules and results exist.
Release context and what is still provisional
Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves are planned for simultaneous worldwide release in 2027 exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2, according to the official announcement. The games are described as an open-world adventure involving islands, ocean and Pokémon partners.
“Planned” is important: the release plan is an announcement, not a guarantee that every feature shown will remain unchanged. The same official page says the footage and screenshots come from a product in development and that the final gameplay experience may vary. Treat dates, mechanics and visual material as current announced information rather than a completed specification.
Current verdict
There is no evidence that Mr. Windychu or Ms. Wavychu is better than Pikachu. The new pair have a confirmed identity and visual reveal, but no published battle data. Pikachu is the responsible default for a team decision because it is the established option, provided the finished game confirms its availability.
Keep a place open for Windychu or Wavychu if you like their designs or if future details fill a role your team lacks. Make the final choice only after comparing typing, ability, stats, movepool, timing, form mechanics, version access and six-member team synergy.
