mrsid.dll is the MrSID PlugIn for IrfanView, not a Windows system file. If Windows reports that mrsid.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the matching 32-bit IrfanView plug-in rather than copying a random DLL into a Windows folder.

The official IrfanView plug-in page provides a dedicated MR-SID installer and ZIP package. The general 32-bit plug-in archive, iv_formats.zip, also includes MrSID support. The MR-SID package requires additional DLLs, so reinstalling the complete package is safer than replacing only mrsid.dll.
First, identify which failure you have
The repair path depends on whether IrfanView itself is broken or only MrSID support is missing.
#1 Best Overall
- The easiest way to scan photos and documents. Supports 3x5, 4x6, 5x7, and 8x10 in sizes photo scanning but also letter and A4 size paper. Optical Resolution is up to 600 dpi ( PS: two setting: 300dpi/ 600dpi).
- Fast and easy, 2 seconds for one 4x6 photo and 5 seconds for one 8x10 size photo@300dpi. You can easily convert about 1000 photos to digitize files in one afternoon and share with your family or friends.
- More efficient than a flatbed scanner. Just insert the photos one by one and then scan. This makes ePhoto much more efficient than a flatbed scanner.
- Powerful Image Enhancement functions included. Quickly enhance and restore old faded images with a click of the mouse.
IrfanView opens, but .sid files fail
This usually means the MR-SID plug-in was never installed, was deleted, was quarantined, or was placed in the wrong plug-in directory. Start with the official 32-bit plug-in reinstall below.
IrfanView will not start at all
A missing plug-in can sometimes prevent an application from loading, but a complete IrfanView startup failure can also indicate a damaged installation, wrong executable, permissions problem, or another missing dependency. Reinstall IrfanView 32-bit first, then install the matching plug-ins.
Common messages
You may see wording such as:
- “This application failed to start because mrsid.dll was not found.”
- “The file mrsid.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “The program can’t start because mrsid.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because mrsid.dll was not found.”
- “mrsid.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The exact wording varies by Windows version and failure condition. The last message commonly indicates an incompatible, damaged, or wrong-architecture binary. It does not mean that mrsid.dll is owned by Windows.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBefore changing anything, note whether the problem began after reinstalling IrfanView, updating it, deleting plug-ins, antivirus quarantine, or switching from IrfanView 32-bit to IrfanView-64.
Fix 1: Reinstall the official 32-bit IrfanView plug-in
This is the most likely fix when IrfanView opens normally but cannot open SID files.
Step 1: Close IrfanView
- Close every IrfanView window.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select any remaining
i_view32.exeor IrfanView process. - Choose End task.
Do not continue while an old IrfanView process is still using its plug-in files.
Step 2: Confirm the application architecture
IrfanView 32-bit and IrfanView-64 use separate plug-in sets. The special MR-SID plug-in requires IrfanView 32-bit.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo check the installation:
- Right-click the IrfanView shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Select Open File Location.
- Look at the executable and folder names.
You can also open IrfanView, choose Help, then About IrfanView and check whether the program identifies itself as 32-bit or 64-bit.
A 64-bit Windows installation can run IrfanView 32-bit. Windows architecture and application architecture are separate. Installing the 32-bit plug-in on a 64-bit version of Windows is acceptable, but installing it into IrfanView-64 is not.

Step 3: Download the complete official package
Use the official IrfanView website and its PlugIns page. Download one of these vendor-provided packages:
irfanview_mrsid_plugin.exeirfanview_mrsid_plugin.zip- The general 32-bit plug-in archive,
iv_formats.zip
Do not use a standalone mrsid.dll download from a file-indexing site. The complete package includes the plug-in and its required supporting files.

Step 4: Install it into the correct folder
If you downloaded the installer:
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- When prompted for the IrfanView location, select the folder containing the 32-bit IrfanView executable.
- Complete the installation.
If you downloaded the ZIP file:
- Right-click the ZIP file.
- Select Extract All.
- Open the extracted files.
- Copy the plug-in files into the
Pluginsfolder inside the 32-bit IrfanView installation. - Allow Windows to replace existing files if the package is newer and came from the official source.
Do not copy the files to System32, SysWOW64, the Windows folder, or another application’s directory.
Step 5: Verify the plug-in
- Start the 32-bit IrfanView executable.
- Open Help.
- Select Installed PlugIns where that option is available.
- Look for the MR-SID or SID plug-in.
- Open a known-good
.sidfile.
If the file opens, the repair worked. If the plug-in is not listed, check that you installed it into the exact directory used by the executable you launched. Duplicate IrfanView installations are a frequent reason for installing a plug-in successfully but seeing no change.
Fix 2: Reinstall IrfanView 32-bit, then reinstall its plug-ins
Use this path when IrfanView itself is damaged, files were manually deleted, or the plug-in reinstall did not restore support.
- Back up any custom IrfanView settings or plug-in configuration you need.
- Open Settings with
Windows+I. - Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find IrfanView.
- Select Uninstall and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current official IrfanView 32-bit installer.
- Install it into a clear, known location.
- Download and install the official 32-bit plug-in package.
- Open IrfanView and test a SID image.
If you keep both IrfanView editions, use separate folders and shortcuts. Confirm that the shortcut you use launches the 32-bit executable, not IrfanView-64.
Reinstalling the complete application and plug-in set also restores companion DLLs required by the MR-SID plug-in. If a later error names a different DLL, that file may be the missing dependency rather than mrsid.dll itself.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine an application plug-in after an update or scan. This is a possible cause, but the filename alone does not prove that quarantine occurred.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving IrfanView, its plug-in folder, or
mrsid.dll. - Review the detection details and file path.
Restore a quarantined file only when:
- The original installer came from the official IrfanView source.
- The file is located inside the expected IrfanView plug-in directory.
- Your security product confirms the detection was a false positive.
If you are uncertain, do not restore the isolated file. Remove the damaged installation and reinstall the complete official 32-bit package. If the same detection returns, submit the file and detection details to the antivirus vendor rather than disabling protection.

Fix 4: Check the exact executable and plug-in directory
This fix matters when reinstalling appears to work but the error remains.
- Right-click the shortcut you normally use.
- Select Properties.
- Note the path shown in Target.
- Open that folder.
- Confirm that its
Pluginssubfolder contains the newly installed files. - Launch the executable directly from that folder.
- Test the
.sidfile again.
Also check for:
- An older IrfanView installation in another folder.
- A shortcut pointing to IrfanView-64.
- A custom plug-in directory.
- Files blocked by permissions.
- An antivirus event involving the plug-in folder.
- A ZIP package extracted one folder too deep.
A common extraction mistake produces a path like:
IrfanViewPluginsiv_formatsPlugins
The DLLs must be in the plug-in directory that the running IrfanView installation actually uses.
Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 for this plug-in
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose command for installing every DLL.
There is no verified indication that mrsid.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX library. Running this command is therefore normally irrelevant:
regsvr32 mrsid.dll
It can produce another error and distract from the real issue, which is usually an incomplete plug-in package or a 32-bit/64-bit mismatch.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the official IrfanView installer or ZIP package instead.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows also shows corruption
SFC and DISM do not normally repair mrsid.dll because it is a third-party IrfanView plug-in, not a protected Windows system file. Run these commands only if other Windows programs also report damaged system files, Windows features fail, or the operating system is showing broader corruption.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the official IrfanView 32-bit plug-in if the error remains.
A successful DISM or SFC scan does not install the MR-SID plug-in. It only repairs Windows components when corruption is present.
If repeating SFC and DISM leaves you guessing about what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling IrfanView’s official plug-in remains the definitive fix for this application-specific file.

Windows Features are also not where MrSID support is enabled:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Choose Turn Windows features on or off.
- Do not enable random features as a substitute for installing the IrfanView plug-in.
The required files belong with IrfanView.
Fix 8: Consider drivers only when another error identifies a driver problem
A display or storage driver can cause broader application problems, but updating drivers is not a normal fix for a missing mrsid.dll plug-in. Check drivers only when Device Manager reports a problem or another error specifically names a driver.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →To inspect Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters or Storage controllers.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Do not uninstall a working device merely because IrfanView cannot load MrSID files.
If manually hunting through hardware vendors and comparing dozens of driver versions is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify stale drivers; the driver installation is completed by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the correct IrfanView plug-in.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What not to do
Do not copy mrsid.dll into System32
A 32-bit application plug-in does not belong in:
C:WindowsSystem32
or:
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those folders are not interchangeable repair locations. Copying the file there can create confusion, leave the application using the wrong copy, and fail to provide the companion DLLs it needs.
Do not download a standalone DLL from a random website
A standalone download may contain:
- The wrong architecture.
- An old or incompatible build.
- A modified or unsafe file.
- No required companion libraries.
- A file that does not match the installed IrfanView version.
The safe source is the official IrfanView installer or plug-in package. Install the complete package into the matching application directory.
Do not mix 32-bit and 64-bit plug-ins
The MR-SID plug-in is specifically for IrfanView 32-bit. Do not place it in IrfanView-64, and do not copy 64-bit plug-ins into the 32-bit installation.
Do not treat old index metadata as current vendor information
Third-party file indexes may show an old version, file size, or internal description. Such details are identification clues, not proof of the current official build. Use the vendor’s current package instead.

FAQ
Is mrsid.dll a Windows file?
No. It belongs to IrfanView’s MR-SID plug-in and should not normally be in a Windows system directory.
Which program needs mrsid.dll?
Primarily IrfanView when it is configured to open LizardTech SID/MrSID images.
Does the plug-in work with IrfanView-64?
The special MR-SID plug-in requires IrfanView 32-bit. Install the 32-bit application and its matching plug-ins together.
Can 64-bit Windows run IrfanView 32-bit?
Yes. Windows bitness does not prevent a compatible 32-bit application from running.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I register mrsid.dll?
Normally no. regsvr32 is not a universal DLL installation command, and this plug-in is not established as a self-registering library.
Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as a first-line fix. The official MR-SID package and its companion DLLs are the relevant installation. Repair other runtimes only when an error specifically identifies them.
What if IrfanView starts but only SID files fail?
Reinstall the official 32-bit MR-SID plug-in and confirm it appears in the installed plug-ins list. This points to plug-in support rather than a Windows-wide problem.
What if another DLL is named after reinstalling?
Install the complete official MR-SID package again and troubleshoot the newly named dependency. The message may identify a companion library rather than mrsid.dll itself.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Is System32 the safest place for the file?
No. Keep mrsid.dll with the matching IrfanView 32-bit plug-in in the application’s Plugins directory.
