msadds.dll is Microsoft’s OLE DB Data Shaping Provider, a legacy Windows Data Access component used by older database applications. If msadds.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the application that called it first, then repair Windows rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file exposes the MSDataShape provider. ADO and OLE DB programs use it to create hierarchical, or “shaped,” recordsets. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET assembly, graphics driver, or game-specific library.
Before repairing anything
First determine whether the problem belongs to one application or to Windows more broadly.
- If only one old program fails, repair or reinstall that program first.
- If several older database programs fail, suspect damaged Windows Data Access components.
- If the message appeared after antivirus cleanup, inspect quarantine before changing system files.
- If the application is 32-bit, it may require the 32-bit provider even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
- If the file exists, check its path and Microsoft digital signature before attempting registration.
Common messages include:
- “The file msadds.dll is missing.”
- “msadds.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading msadds.dll.”
- “msadds.dll could not be loaded.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because msadds.dll was not found.”
- “The application has failed to start because msadds.dll was not found.”
- “Error creating object. Please verify that the Microsoft Data Access Components 2.1 or later have been properly installed.”
These messages do not all indicate the same failure. A provider registration problem can produce an error even when the DLL is physically present.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application that reports the error
Time needed: 5 to 20 minutes
When one program triggers the error, its installation is the most useful starting point. The application may have lost its provider registration, a related file, or an application-specific dependency.
Use Windows’ repair option
- Save your work and close the affected program.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the application in the list.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
The exact options vary by program. Some traditional desktop applications do not provide an Advanced options page.
Use the application’s own installer
If Windows does not offer Repair:
- Find the original installer, setup disc, or official installer supplied by the application vendor.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Repair, Modify, or an equivalent option if offered.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Test the application again.
If repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall and reinstall the application from its original, trusted source. Back up application data first, especially if the program uses local database files.
A reinstall is the definitive repair when the missing file belongs to an application-specific installation. Do not copy a downloaded msadds.dll into the program folder simply because the error names that file.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Check a launcher’s file verification option
Some older games and database applications are installed through a launcher. Open the launcher and look for an option named Verify files, Repair files, or Scan and repair. Run it, allow the process to complete, and then start the application from the launcher.
If this fixes the problem, the installation was incomplete or damaged. If it does not, continue with Windows repair.
Fix 2: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes, excluding download time
On Windows 10 and Windows 11, Windows Data Access Components are part of the operating system. They are serviced through Windows rather than through a separate modern MDAC installer.
- Open Start > Settings.
- On Windows 11, select Windows Update.
- On Windows 10, select Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available quality and cumulative updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on restarting.
- Test the application again.
If an update is waiting for a restart, complete that restart before running repair commands. A pending update can prevent protected Windows files from being replaced correctly.
Use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance if Windows Update itself reports an error.

Fix 3: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
Use this fix when the file is absent from its expected component location, several applications fail, or application repair did not help. Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management, or DISM, before System File Checker.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window because progress may pause for several minutes.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a repair source. A successful result normally says that the restore operation completed successfully.

C:RepairSourceWindows is only an example path. Replace it with a real repair source that matches the installed Windows edition and build closely. Do not enter that path unless the corresponding source actually exists.
Run SFC after DISM
In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then interpret the result:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations means SFC found no damaged protected files.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them means restart Windows and test the application.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them means restart, run DISM again, and run SFC once more.
- If the same application still fails after successful repairs, return to application repair and investigate its provider registration and architecture.
Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions explain the related results and recovery process.
When manually hunting through Windows components and repeating DISM or SFC without knowing what changed becomes impractical, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the specific application that produced the error.
Fix 4: Check the file’s location, architecture, and signature
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
A genuine msadds.dll is a Microsoft component. A copy in a random download folder, a user-writable directory, or an unrelated application folder deserves suspicion.
Historical Windows installations commonly place the component in one of these locations:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesSystemmsadcmsadds.dll
For the 32-bit component on 64-bit Windows:
C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesSystemmsadcmsadds.dll
These are normal historical locations, not guaranteed universal paths. Windows releases and installation histories differ. Do not assume that every valid copy belongs in System32.

- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
Understand 32-bit and 64-bit copies
Both copies can legitimately exist on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit operating system supports older 32-bit applications through separate compatibility components. A 32-bit database application may need the 32-bit MSDataShape provider even though the operating system is 64-bit.
Do not copy a 64-bit DLL over a 32-bit DLL, and do not move either file into an arbitrary application directory. Architecture mismatches can produce messages such as:
This application has failed to start because msadds.dll is not a valid Win32 application.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
The application’s architecture matters more than the architecture of Windows alone.
Fix 5: Register the verified provider only when appropriate
Time needed: 5 minutes
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It works only when the DLL supports COM self-registration through functions such as DllRegisterServer. It cannot recreate a missing file or repair a damaged dependency.
Registration is relevant mainly for a verified legacy MDAC installation where the correct file exists in its proper directory and the error indicates a provider or COM registration problem.
Register a 64-bit copy
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
%windir%System32regsvr32.exe "C:Program FilesCommon FilesSystemmsadcmsadds.dll"
Register a 32-bit copy on 64-bit Windows
Use the 32-bit registration tool with the 32-bit file:
%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesSystemmsadcmsadds.dll"
The names are counterintuitive:
System32regsvr32.exeis the 64-bit registration tool on 64-bit Windows.SysWOW64regsvr32.exeis the 32-bit registration tool.
If the command reports that the module could not be loaded, check the file path, architecture, and dependent components. Do not repeatedly run registration commands against random copies.
Microsoft explains the regsvr32 command and the COM self-registration requirements.
Fix 6: Handle older Windows and MDAC separately
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes
On Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003, the correct repair may involve the application’s original MDAC installation or a matching Microsoft MDAC release.

On Windows Vista and later, Windows Data Access Components are included with Windows and are not offered as a separate general-purpose redistributable. Installing the old MDAC 2.8 SP1 package on Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, or Windows 11 is generally the wrong repair and can create additional compatibility problems.

Microsoft’s old mdac_typ.exe redistributable was intended for legacy operating systems, particularly Windows 2000. Microsoft’s current MDAC download page is primarily for the MDAC 2.8 SDK, not a modern end-user repair package.
For a legacy computer:
- Identify the exact Windows version.
- Identify whether the application is 32-bit.
- Use the application’s original installer or matching Microsoft documentation.
- Repair the related Data Shaping and Cursor components from the same MDAC generation.
- Restart and test the application.
Do not mix files from different MDAC releases. The related cursor component is msadce.dll, and mismatched provider components can leave the application unable to create its data-access object.
Fix 7: Check antivirus quarantine and recent system changes
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
A security product, disk cleanup utility, backup restoration, or incomplete update may have removed or replaced a component.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an action involving
msadds.dll. - Note the file path and detection details.
- Restore the file only if it is in the expected component directory and has a valid Microsoft signature.
- Run a full scan after restoration.
If the file has no valid signature or was located in a user-writable folder, do not restore it. Repair Windows or the application and perform a full malware scan.

System Restore is reasonable when the failure clearly began after a recent system change and a suitable restore point exists:
- Open Start and search for

- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review the affected programs before confirming.
System Restore is not a substitute for malware removal or application reinstallation.

Windows Features
Do not expect Windows Features to provide a normal msadds.dll repair switch. You can inspect the list if a particular legacy application explicitly requires an optional Windows component:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Optional features on Windows 11.
- On Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Optional features.
- Review installed features and any documented requirement from the application vendor.
Do not enable random legacy features to resolve a provider error. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or application repair instead.

It is not required to repair msadds.dll.
Why downloading msadds.dll is unsafe
Avoid isolated DLL download sites sites and file-copy instructions that tell you to place msadds.dll in System32 or the application directory.
That approach can fail because:
- the file may contain malware or unwanted modifications;
- the version may not match Windows;
- the architecture may be wrong;
- the file may not be digitally signed;
- the provider may still be incorrectly registered;
- related MDAC components may also be damaged;
- the original application or Windows component remains broken.
The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows’ own DISM and SFC repair mechanisms, the original application installer, and Microsoft’s documentation for legacy MDAC systems.
Likely causes and the corresponding repair
| Likely cause | What points to it | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| Damaged Windows component | Several applications fail or the file is absent from the component location | Install updates, then run DISM followed by SFC |
| Broken application installation | Only one program fails | Use Repair, file verification, or reinstall |
| 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch | A 32-bit program fails on 64-bit Windows | Repair the application and verify the 32-bit provider |
| Legacy MDAC damage | Old Windows or a message about MDAC 2.1 or later | Use the matching legacy installer |
| Antivirus quarantine | Failure began after a security event | Check quarantine and signature before restoring |
| Disk corruption or malware | Signature is invalid, path is suspicious, or repairs fail repeatedly | Scan the system and investigate disk health |
If the error remains
Collect these details before making further changes:
- Windows edition and build
- Application name and version
- Exact error text
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The full path of any existing
msadds.dll - Whether the file has a valid Microsoft signature
- Whether one application or several applications fail
- Whether the issue followed an update, uninstall, restore, cleanup, or antivirus action
If DISM and SFC repair Windows successfully but one program still fails, inspect that program’s provider configuration and reinstall it. If only one Windows user profile has the problem, test the application from a new profile. For persistent system-wide failure, review relevant Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application entries before considering an in-place Windows repair.
FAQ
Is msadds.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is Microsoft’s OLE DB Data Shaping Provider and is associated with Microsoft Data Access Components and Windows Data Access Components.
Is msadds.dll safe?
A genuine Microsoft-signed copy in an expected Windows component directory is normally safe. A copy in a random application or user-writable folder should be checked carefully for its signature and provenance.
