“mscand20.dll is missing from your computer.” “The code execution cannot proceed because mscand20.dll was not found.” You may also see “There was a problem starting mscand20.dll,” “Error loading mscand20.dll,” or “mscand20.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

The 60-second answer

mscand20.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with Microsoft IME and the Candidate UI. Windows text-input features use it for language systems that require an input method editor. It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable file, DirectX component, or ordinary game dependency.

The safest repair is:

  1. Install pending Windows updates and restart.
  2. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  3. Run DISM, then System File Checker:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows and test the affected language or application.
  2. If only one IME is affected, reinstall that language and its basic typing feature through Settings.

Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website and copy it into System32. That can introduce malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible version, or a file that bypasses Windows servicing without fixing the damaged component.

What is mscand20.dll

mscand20.dll belongs to the Windows IME shared component set. A typical location is:

C:WindowsSystem32IMEsharedmscand20.dll

The exact path can vary with the Windows release, installed languages, servicing state, and system architecture. On 64-bit Windows, a corresponding 32-bit Windows component may also exist in the appropriate 32-bit system location.

The file supports Microsoft IME Candidate UI behavior. That interface is involved when Windows presents conversion or character candidates while you type in languages that use an IME. A failure may therefore appear when switching keyboard layouts, typing in a particular language, opening a text field, or launching software that relies on Windows input services.

Windows updates have included serviced versions of Mscand20.dll. Microsoft documentation records versions from Windows 7, Windows 8, and related server releases, including both x86 and x64 files. A filename match alone is not enough to identify a legitimate copy, however. The expected copy should be in a Windows component directory and carry a valid Microsoft digital signature.

What usually causes the error

Cause What is happening Best response
Damaged Windows files The protected IME component is missing or corrupted Run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC
Damaged language feature A language pack or basic typing feature is incomplete Reinstall the affected language
Failed update Servicing stopped before all files were applied Restart, update again, then repair Windows
Antivirus quarantine Security software removed or isolated the file Review Protection history before restoring anything
Disk or file-system corruption Windows cannot reliably read the component Back up data and investigate storage health
Malware or tampering A file was modified, removed, or replaced Run Microsoft Defender scans
Wrong replacement DLL An unofficial copy does not match the caller or Windows build Remove it and repair Windows
Application-specific failure One program reports a dependency problem incorrectly Repair that program after repairing Windows

“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean mscand20.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the DLL. That is another reason copying a file with the same name is unreliable.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and repair system files

This is the best first repair because mscand20.dll is an in-box Windows component rather than a file normally owned by a game.

Install pending updates

On Windows 11:

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for updates.
  4. Install everything offered.
  5. Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Check for updates again after restarting.

On Windows 10:

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Open Update & Security.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Click Check for updates.
  5. Install the available updates and restart.

Test the affected IME after Windows starts again. If the same error appears, continue with DISM and SFC.

Run DISM and SFC

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
  5. Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until SFC reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart the computer.

DISM repairs the Windows component store, which provides clean source files for Windows repairs. SFC then scans protected system files and replaces missing or damaged copies. Running SFC first can leave it without a usable repair source, so keep this order.

If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, restart and test the IME. If it says that some files could not be repaired, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, use matching Windows installation media with the /Source and /LimitAccess options described in Microsoft’s system-file repair guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manually repeating DISM and SFC can make it difficult to tell what changed. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows reported problems, while repair actions require the full version; it is optional, and Windows repair remains the correct path for a damaged Microsoft IME component.

Fix 2: Reinstall the affected language and typing feature

If the error occurs only when using one language, the language installation is a stronger suspect than the whole Windows installation.

Windows 11

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Time & language.
  3. Open Language & region.
  4. Find the affected language.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Language options.
  7. Under language features, remove and reinstall the relevant typing or IME feature where Windows provides that option.
  8. If necessary, select Remove for the language, restart, then return to Language & region.
  9. Click Add a language, select the same language, and install it with its required basic typing features.

Use Microsoft’s language-pack instructions and language and keyboard settings guide if the labels differ on your build.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Time & Language.
  3. Choose Language.
  4. Select the affected language.
  5. Click Options.
  6. Check whether its keyboard and basic typing components are installed.
  7. Remove the language if its installation is clearly damaged.
  8. Click Add a language, select it again, and install the language pack and required typing features.
  9. Restart Windows and test the input method.

For managed or offline computers, language Features on Demand packages can be installed with DISM. The package must match the Windows release, language, and architecture. Microsoft documents commands such as:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
dism /online /add-package /packagepath:C:tempMicrosoft-Windows-LanguageFeatures-Basic-zh-tw-Package~*.cab

Do not use a package intended for a different Windows release or processor architecture.

Fix 3: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine

Antivirus software can quarantine a damaged file, or occasionally misidentify an IME component.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving mscand20.dll.
  5. Expand the event and review its original path, detection name, and action.
  6. Do not restore the file merely because an application says it is missing.
  7. Restore it only when the original location and Microsoft signature are consistent with a Windows component.
  8. Run a full scan afterward.

Microsoft explains this process in its Protection history documentation. If the file was found in Downloads, Temp, an unknown application folder, or an unofficial DLL archive, leave it quarantined and scan the computer.

To inspect a suspicious copy, right-click it, select Properties, and open Digital Signatures. A valid Microsoft signature supports authenticity, but it does not make every copy with this filename trustworthy. Location, signature, version compatibility, and the result of Windows repair all matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Repair the program that reports the error

Although Windows owns this component, an individual application may report the failure when it starts or loads a text field.

First determine the scope:

  • If every application and the Windows language switcher fail, repair Windows and the language feature.
  • If only one game or program fails, update or repair that program after completing the Windows repairs.
  • If the program has a launcher, use its Repair, Verify files, or equivalent option.
  • If no repair option exists, uninstall it, restart, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.

Do not assume that reinstalling Visual C++ will fix this file. There is no established evidence that mscand20.dll belongs to the Visual C++ runtime. Reinstalling a runtime is appropriate only when that specific application also reports a missing runtime component.

Fix 5: Check architecture and dependencies

A 64-bit Windows installation can contain both 64-bit and 32-bit system components. A 32-bit program must load a compatible 32-bit dependency, while a 64-bit process needs the matching 64-bit component. Copying whichever file has the largest size is not a valid repair.

Check the failing program:

  1. Right-click its executable or shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open Details if available.
  4. Check the application’s documentation or system requirements for its architecture.
  5. Repair Windows rather than replacing the DLL manually.

If the message says the specified module cannot be found even though the file exists, another dependency may be missing. Run DISM and SFC, reinstall the affected language feature, and repair the application. Avoid DLL dependency-finder downloads unless you are diagnosing the issue in a controlled technician workflow.

Fix 6: Use regsvr32 only when specifically indicated

Do not routinely register mscand20.dll. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer; it does not restore a missing Windows file or rebuild the component store.

Some builds may expose registration functions, but that does not make manual registration the normal fix. Use it only when a Microsoft or application diagnostic explicitly identifies registration as the problem and you have a correctly matched Windows copy.

If instructed by a qualified technician, use the command prompt that matches the required architecture. A typical command is:

regsvr32 "C:WindowsSystem32IMEsharedmscand20.dll"

A successful registration message means only that the registration call completed. It does not prove that the file is authentic, that the IME installation is healthy, or that all dependencies are present. If the command fails, stop and return to Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and language-feature repair.

Fix 7: Investigate drivers only when input hardware is also failing

A keyboard driver normally is not the cause of a missing Windows IME DLL. If the error is accompanied by a keyboard or HID device problem, check Device Manager separately:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Keyboards and Human Interface Devices.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Update driver and choose Search automatically for drivers.
  6. If the issue began after a driver update, open Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when available.
  7. Restart Windows.

Avoid replacing a working driver simply to address mscand20.dll. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for reported driver issues and show what needs attention, while driver installation requires the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing the Windows IME.

Fix 8: Use System Restore or repair Windows

If the error began immediately after an update, software installation, or security event, System Restore may return Windows to an earlier working state.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select a restore point created before the problem began.
  3. Review the affected programs and drivers.
  4. Confirm the restore and allow Windows to restart.

Microsoft’s System Restore instructions explain what the process changes. Personal files are not normally removed, but recently installed programs and drivers can be affected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Back up important files before attempting an in-place repair or reset. Persistent corruption after DISM, SFC, updates, and language reinstallation may require an in-place Windows repair using matching installation media.

Should you download mscand20.dll

Normally, no. Random DLL download sites sites cannot reliably choose the correct Windows build, architecture, language component, or servicing state. A replacement can also be unsigned, tampered with, or incompatible with the program that loads it.

Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, official Windows installation media, or the language-feature installer instead. If an antivirus product quarantined a genuine file, verify its original Windows location and digital signature before considering restoration.

FAQ

Is mscand20.dll a virus?

The legitimate file is a Microsoft Windows IME component. A copy in an unexpected folder, without a valid Microsoft signature, or associated with suspicious behavior should be treated cautiously and scanned.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix mscand20.dll?

Not normally. mscand20.dll is associated with Microsoft IME, not established as a Visual C++ Redistributable file.

Can I copy it into System32?

Do not use that as the normal repair. The wrong version or architecture can create further loading and servicing problems.

Why does an application mention the file if Windows owns it?

The application may use Windows text-input functionality or may be reporting a dependency-loading failure. Repair Windows first, then repair the individual application if it remains the only program affected.

What information should I collect if the error remains?

Record the exact error text, Windows version and build, affected language or IME, file path, digital-signature result, whether the file exists, and whether every program or only one application fails. That information distinguishes a Windows component problem from an application-specific dependency issue.
