profsvcext.dll: Repair the Windows Profile Component Safely

profsvcext.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system component associated with the User Profile Service, not a game, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET download. If Windows says it is missing or cannot load, repair Windows components first instead of copying a DLL from the internet.

What this file actually does

The name ProfSvcExt refers to an extension component related to Windows User Profile Service, also known as ProfSvc. This service loads and unloads user profiles and supports applications that access profile data.

Microsoft warns that disabling or breaking the User Profile Service can prevent successful sign-in and interfere with applications that use user data. The file is therefore part of Windows rather than a normal application-owned runtime.

On 64-bit Windows, the native system copy is normally associated with:

Windows may also provide a 32-bit copy through:

%windir%SysWOW64

These folder names can be confusing. System32 contains native 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 supports 32-bit applications. Windows normally handles this redirection automatically.

Public file inventories identify profsvcext.dll as part of Microsoft Windows Operating System and show historical Windows versions, but they are not a complete catalogue of current supported builds. The exact file version on your PC depends on the Windows release and servicing level installed.

What the error usually means

The message may say:

  • “The program can’t start because profsvcext.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “There was a problem starting profsvcext.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “Error loading profsvcext.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because profsvcext.dll was not found.”
  • “profsvcext.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

The named file may be missing or damaged, but “specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL is missing.

Symptom Most likely direction
Error appears during Windows startup or sign-in Repair Windows components and inspect User Profile Service events
Several applications report the error Treat it as Windows component corruption
Only one program reports it Repair or reinstall that program after repairing Windows
Problem began immediately after an update Review update history and consider System Restore
Defender recently quarantined a system file Check Protection History before restoring anything
DISM and SFC repeatedly fail Investigate servicing, disk, or filesystem corruption
A manually copied DLL produces a new error Remove the replacement and repair Windows properly

Fix profsvcext.dll errors

1. Install Windows updates and restart

Pending updates can contain repaired or replaced Windows components.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Open Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install all available updates.
  6. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  7. Try the program or sign-in process again.

If the error disappears, the missing component was likely restored during servicing. If Windows Update fails, note the exact error and continue with DISM and SFC below.

2. Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC

Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected system files against that repaired source.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Leave the window open until SFC reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows and test the affected program again.

A successful repair may report that corrupted files were found and repaired. SFC may also report that no integrity violations were found. Either result should be followed by a restart and a repeat test.

If DISM says that source files cannot be found, do not download profsvcext.dll separately. Use a matching Windows installation source or proceed through Microsoft’s supported recovery and reinstallation options. If SFC says it could not repair some files, review the result after restarting and investigate the component store or recovery options rather than repeatedly copying files.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it identifies; its repair action is provided by the full version. It is optional, and Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the direct repair path.

3. Repair the affected application

If the message appears only when opening one application, the application may have a damaged installation, a missing dependency, or a damaged user profile. Repair Windows first, then repair the program.

On Windows 11:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Open Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select its three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Restart the application and test it.

If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to the same screen and try Reset. Reset can remove the application’s stored settings, so back up application data first when appropriate.

For older desktop software:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs and Features.
  3. Select the affected program.
  4. Choose Change, Repair, or the equivalent option.
  5. Complete the vendor’s repair wizard.
  6. Restart Windows.

If repair fails, uninstall the program, restart, and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer. For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity feature when available. A reinstall of the affected program is the definitive fix when its own installation is damaged.

The exact executable that produced the message matters. A shortcut, launcher, service, or helper process may be reporting the error even when the main program is not the source.

4. Check Windows Security Protection History

Antivirus cleanup or quarantine is a possible cause, although it is not specific proof that this DLL was malicious or commonly removed.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review recent detections and quarantined items.
  6. Open a relevant detection to inspect its path, publisher, and action.

Do not blindly choose Restore or Allow on device. Restore a file only when its location, Microsoft publisher information, digital signature, and origin are trusted. Allowing a genuinely malicious file can expose the computer.

If the deletion appears suspicious, leave the item quarantined, update Defender, and run a full scan. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead of restoring an uncertain file manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Check whether an update caused the problem

If profsvcext.dll errors began immediately after Windows installed an update, review the update history.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Update history.
  3. Note updates installed around the time the problem began.
  4. Open Uninstall updates, if Windows offers that option.
  5. Remove only the update that clearly matches the timing and issue.
  6. Restart and test Windows.

Removing an update can create security or compatibility consequences, so use it as a targeted troubleshooting step rather than a routine fix. If the problem continues, use System Restore or the supported Windows recovery options.

6. Use System Restore when repair started failing after a change

System Restore can roll back system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs to an earlier restore point. It does not normally remove personal files.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart and complete the restore.

If Windows cannot sign in, enter Windows Recovery Environment and choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore. BitLocker-protected devices may require the recovery key.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Check User Profile Service events if sign-in is affected

If the DLL error appears with a temporary profile, failed sign-in, or profile-loading message, inspect the related logs.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Event Viewer and open it.
  3. Expand Applications and Services Logs.
  4. Expand Microsoft.
  5. Expand Windows.
  6. Open User Profile Service.
  7. Select Operational.
  8. Also inspect the Application log for User Profiles Service events.
  9. Record the event ID, timestamp, and error description.

Do not delete or recreate a profile before saving important user data. If the events indicate broader profile corruption and System Restore does not help, use Windows recovery support or a separate administrator account to protect the user’s files while troubleshooting.

8. Consider disk or filesystem corruption

Repeated DISM or SFC failures can indicate more than a missing file. A damaged disk or filesystem can prevent Windows from reading or replacing protected components.

Back up important data first. Microsoft documents this command as a Windows-update troubleshooting measure:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
chkdsk /f C:

Run it from an elevated Command Prompt. Windows may schedule the check for the next restart because the system drive is in use. This is not a guaranteed profsvcext.dll fix, and the check may take time. If errors return, investigate drive health and replace failing storage before continuing with repairs.

9. Do not use regsvr32 for this file

Running the following command is not a normal repair:

regsvr32 profsvcext.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A protected Windows component such as this is not repaired by registering it. The command may produce an entry-point error, and it does not restore a missing file, its dependencies, its signature, or Windows servicing metadata.

10. Do not copy the DLL into System32, SysWOW64, or a game folder

There is no verified official standalone Microsoft download for profsvcext.dll. Random DLL download sites can supply malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or an incomplete dependency set. A copied file can also leave Windows Component-Based Servicing unaware that the replacement exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or supported Windows recovery and reinstallation options. If a single application is responsible, reinstall that application from its developer’s official source instead.

Manually placing a 32-bit file in a 64-bit location, or a 64-bit file beside a 32-bit executable, can create a different loading error. Windows normally manages System32 and SysWOW64 through its filesystem redirection model, so manual placement should not be used to bypass that process.

What to provide if the error remains

Collect these details before contacting support:

  • Windows edition and build
  • Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • The exact error text
  • The executable or shortcut that reports the error
  • Whether profsvcext.dll exists in the expected Windows directories
  • DISM and SFC result messages
  • Relevant User Profile Service and Application log entries
  • Recent Windows Update history
  • Any Defender Protection History detection
  • Whether the problem affects sign-in, one application, or multiple programs

That information helps distinguish a missing Windows component from a missing dependency, damaged application, profile problem, or servicing failure.
