This file is a genuine Microsoft Windows system component connected to the Text Services Framework, not a game-specific DLL or Visual C++ runtime. The safest repair is to restore Windows components with DISM and System File Checker rather than downloading a replacement.

Which fix applies to you
Use the branch that matches what you are seeing:
- Windows or several applications report the error: repair Windows with DISM, then SFC.
- Only one game or application fails: repair or reinstall that application after checking its launcher and antivirus quarantine.
- The file exists but Windows says it contains an error: verify its signature and architecture, then run DISM and SFC.
- The problem began after an update: restart, install pending updates, and repeat the Windows repair sequence.
- The file disappeared after antivirus activity: check Protection history before restoring anything.
- Keyboard, IME, handwriting, speech input, or the language bar also malfunction: treat this as a broader Text Services Framework problem.
- Windows will not boot: use Windows Recovery Environment and offline repair or System Restore.
Do not begin by copying msctfui.dll from a DLL download site.

What msctfui.dll does
msctfui.dll is identified as MSCTFUI Server DLL and is associated with Microsoft’s Text Services Framework. TSF supports Windows text-input services including keyboard processors, handwriting recognition, speech recognition, language input, and input method editors.

On 64-bit Windows, the normal native location is:
C:WindowsSystem32msctfui.dll
A 32-bit Windows installation, or the 32-bit system-file view on 64-bit Windows, may use:
C:WindowsSysWOW64msctfui.dll
The names are confusing: on 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains redirected 32-bit files. Do not replace one architecture with the other.
Microsoft does not publish a complete public version list for this file. File inventories show that versions vary between Windows builds, so a matching copy must come from Windows servicing or installation media for your installed release.
Verify the file before repairing it
If the file is present, check its location and digital signature.
- Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
- Browse to
C:WindowsSystem32. - Find
msctfui.dll. If you are checking a 32-bit installation or 32-bit file view, also inspectC:WindowsSysWOW64. - Right-click the file and choose Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and click Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature from Microsoft.
A Microsoft signature and an expected Windows directory are reassuring, but they do not prove that the file is undamaged. A missing signature, an unexpected folder, or a file placed beside a game executable is a reason to avoid copying or registering it manually and proceed with Windows repair.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the primary fix when the file is missing, corrupted, the wrong architecture, or rejected with a “not designed to run on Windows” message. DISM repairs the Windows component store, and SFC uses that repaired source to check protected system files.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Keep the Command Prompt window open even if progress appears to pause.
- Leave the window open for the next command.
DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. If it reports that source files cannot be found, do not point it at a random ISO or another computer. Use official Windows installation media that matches the installed edition and build, then run a source-specific command such as:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:X:Sourcesinstall.wim /LimitAccess
Replace X: and the image index with values that match your media. An incorrect source can fail to repair Windows or introduce a version mismatch.
Run SFC
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows.
A successful result says that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found and repaired corrupted files. Test the application or Windows text input after restarting.
If SFC says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, run DISM again, restart, and run sfc /scannow a second time. If the result still reports unrepaired files, continue with Windows Update repair or an in-place reinstall.
Running these commands manually is useful, but it can be difficult to identify which component changed when repeated scans produce the same result. Fix 2: Install pending Windows updates
A failed or interrupted update can leave a protected Windows file incomplete.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when asked.
- Check for updates again after restarting.
- If
msctfui.dllerrors continue, repeat the DISM and SFC sequence.
On Windows 11, some systems offer a more direct repair:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Click Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the same Windows version while preserving personal files, installed applications, and settings when the option is available.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a system file after a false detection, or remove a file that was genuinely modified.
For Microsoft Defender:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review recent detections for
msctfui.dll. - Expand the detection to inspect its location and reason.
- Restore it only when the file is in the expected Windows directory and its Microsoft signature is valid.
- If you are unsure, leave it quarantined and repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead.
Run a Full scan if the file repeatedly disappears. If Windows or Defender reports persistent unauthorized changes, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan and back up important data before deeper repairs.
Fix 4: Repair the affected application
If Windows works normally and only one program reports msctfui.dll, the application installation may be damaged even though the DLL belongs to Windows.
First, use the program’s own launcher to look for Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of files. This is particularly appropriate for games. Do not copy msctfui.dll into the game directory unless the developer specifically identifies that file as part of its installation.

For a Microsoft Store or supported Windows application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Click the three-dot menu.
- Select Advanced options.
- Click Repair.
- Test the program.
- If Repair does not help, use Reset where appropriate or uninstall and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.
If reinstalling the application does not help and other programs show the same error, return to Windows component repair. Reinstalling Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET is not a targeted solution for this Windows DLL.
Fix 5: Investigate disk or system corruption
If DISM and SFC repeatedly find damage, the underlying storage or Windows installation may be unreliable.

- Back up important files.
- Check the drive’s health using the manufacturer’s support utility or Windows’ available storage diagnostics.
- Review whether the computer has experienced forced shutdowns, file-system errors, or repeated update failures.
- Run DISM and SFC again after addressing storage problems.
A recurring damaged file is not fixed by repeatedly downloading the same DLL. It may indicate drive failure, malware, or broader Windows corruption.

System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after a driver, update, application, or other system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Click System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem started.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, updates, and settings but preserves personal files. It does not replace a backup. If Windows will not start normally, open Windows Recovery Environment and choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.
Fix 7: Repair Windows from installation media
Use an in-place repair when DISM, SFC, Windows Update, and System Restore do not restore the component.
- Obtain official Windows installation media matching your edition and architecture.
- Start Windows normally.
- Open the media and run
setup.exe. - Follow the setup prompts.
- Choose Change what to keep.
- Select Keep personal files and apps.
- Confirm the installation.
Do not boot from the media if your goal is an in-place repair that keeps applications. A clean installation or Reset this PC is a last resort after backing up your files.

Driver updates are not an established direct fix for msctfui.dll, because Windows supplies this file rather than a typical hardware driver package. Consider driver troubleshooting only when the failure began with keyboard, touch, handwriting, audio input, or another device problem.
To inspect a device:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Keyboards, Human Interface Devices, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected device and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Avoid registry cleaners and driver sites that offer unrelated DLL replacements. Why you should not download msctfui.dll
Random DLL repositories create several risks:
- The file may contain malware or have been modified.
- It may be for a different Windows build.
- It may be 32-bit when the application needs 64-bit, or the reverse.
- It may have incompatible dependencies.
- Copying it into
System32,SysWOW64, or a game folder may hide the real Windows or application problem. - A replacement file can be overwritten or quarantined again during servicing.
The safe sources are Windows component repair, Windows Update, matching official installation media, and an official in-place Windows repair. There is no verified standalone Microsoft download package specifically for msctfui.dll.

Do not use regsvr32 as a generic fix
Do not run:
regsvr32 msctfui.dll
as a first response. Some builds may expose registration exports, but registration cannot restore a missing or corrupted file. It can also alter COM registration and introduce another problem. Microsoft documents regsvr32 as a general registration tool, not as a repair procedure for this DLL.
Related Text Services Framework files
These names are related but are not interchangeable:
msctfui.dll: the Windows Text Services Framework UI component.msctf.dll: another core Text Services Framework component.msctfmonitor.dll: a related TSF monitoring component.msctfuimanager.dll: a related TSF UI manager component.
If keyboard switching, an IME, handwriting input, speech input, or the language bar fails without a missing-DLL dialog, the broader TSF configuration may be damaged. Test another Windows user profile and apply Windows updates, DISM, and SFC rather than replacing one named DLL.
FAQ
Is msctfui.dll safe?
A Microsoft-signed copy in C:WindowsSystem32 or the appropriate Windows system location is consistent with a genuine Windows component. Check the digital signature and location rather than trusting the filename alone.
Is msctfui.dll part of Visual C++?
No. It is a Windows Text Services Framework component. Installing every Visual C++ Redistributable does not directly repair it.

The game may be calling Windows text-input services, or the error may appear because the Windows component is damaged. Verify or reinstall the game only when that game is the sole failing application.
Can I copy the file from another computer?
Avoid doing so. Windows file versions and architectures must match the installed build. Use DISM, SFC, Windows Update, or matching installation media.
What if the error returns after repair?
Check Protection history, scan for malware, investigate storage health, and consider an in-place Windows repair. Repeated corruption indicates a broader system problem rather than a need for another downloaded copy.
