Which fix applies to you
Use the description that best matches your situation:
- Microsoft Word or an old Office installation shows the error: repair Office, reinstall its French proofing tools, or remove the obsolete French feature if you no longer use it.
- The error names another legacy application: reinstall or modify that application using its original installer or trusted publisher source.
- The file was recently removed by antivirus: inspect Protection History and restore it only if the original path and installation are trustworthy.
- The error began after uninstalling Office or proofing tools: repair the remaining Office installation or remove the stale feature and startup reference.
- A game or packaged application reports the file: use that application’s launcher repair or file-verification function. There is no verified evidence that
msgrfr32.dllbelongs to a specific game. - The error says “not designed to run on Windows” or “entry point not found”: treat it as a damaged, incompatible, or incomplete installation rather than a simple missing-file problem.
- Several unrelated Windows components are failing: run Windows repair commands after addressing the parent application.
What is msgrfr32.dll
Public file records describe msgrfr32.dll as:
| Property | Reported value |
|---|---|
| Description | Lernout & Hauspie Grammatik Engine (FR) |
| Product | Linguistics |
| Publisher | Lernout & Hauspie |
| Architecture | 32-bit |
| Reported version | 6.1.0.0 |
| Reported size | About 0.28 MB |
The FR portion indicates the French language engine. The file is not established as a protected Windows component, and there is no reliable evidence that it ships with Windows 10 or Windows 11.

The strongest documented association is older Microsoft Word French grammar or proofing functionality. Users reported messages such as:
Word cannot find the grammar file msgrFR32.dll for French (France).
That makes Word the leading known scenario, not a guaranteed identification. Another installed legacy application may be the actual caller.
Identify the program requesting the DLL
Before repairing anything, identify the parent application. Windows loads a DLL for a specific process, and placing a replacement file in a global folder can leave the real installation broken.
Start with the error dialog
Read the title bar and surrounding text carefully. Look for:
- The application name
- A path to the executable
- Whether the message appeared during startup, document editing, login, or shutdown
- The language or feature mentioned, such as French grammar
If the dialog appears when opening Word, test Word directly:
- Close the error.
- Press Windows key and type
Word. - Open the installed Word application.
- Check whether the error appears before a document opens, while checking spelling, or only for a particular file.
If it appears only when opening a document, an add-in, template, or language configuration may be invoking the old component.
Check Event Viewer
Event Viewer may identify the executable that failed.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Choose Find in the right-hand pane.
- Search for
msgrfr32.dll. - Review recent entries from Application Error, SideBySide, or the affected program.
Look for the faulting application name or application path. Record that program before attempting a repair.
Inspect shortcuts and startup entries
A stale shortcut can continue launching software that was already removed.
- Right-click the shortcut that triggers the error.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target and Start in.
- Note the program folder and executable name.
Also check startup entries:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for old Office tools, language utilities, or the program named in the error.
- Right-click an entry and choose Open file location, when available.
Do not delete an entry until you know which application owns it. A stale startup item can be disabled temporarily to confirm whether it is the trigger.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Review recent software changes
Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and sort by installation date when that option is available. Consider whether the error began after:
- Removing an old Office version
- Uninstalling proofing tools
- Running a cleanup utility
- Migrating to a new computer
- Updating or repairing a legacy application
- Restoring files from a backup
The timing often identifies the missing parent component more reliably than the DLL filename.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the parent application
This is the most likely solution.
Repair a modern Windows application
For an application that supports Windows repair options:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the application named by the error.
- Select the three dots beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the application and test it.
The Repair option attempts to correct the installation without removing personal data. If it does not work, return to the same screen and use Reset only when you understand that it may remove application settings or local data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRepair a traditional desktop program
For older desktop software:
- Press Windows key and type
Control Panel. - Open Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Right-click it.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Select French proofing, French grammar, Linguistics, or a similarly named language feature if offered.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
Some older installers require the original CD, mounted installation image, network source, or setup files. Use the same edition and language family that originally installed the application.
Repair Microsoft Office or Word
If Word is the caller, use the Office entry rather than trying to repair the DLL directly.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office, or the relevant Office edition.
- Select the three dots.
- Choose Modify or Advanced options, depending on what Windows displays.
- Run the available repair option.
- Try Online Repair if the quick repair does not resolve the error and your Office installer offers it.
- Restart Windows.
For an older Office installation, open Control Panel > Programs and Features, right-click Microsoft Office, and choose Change. Look for a custom installation or feature-selection screen containing French language, proofing, grammar, or Linguistics support.
If the Office installation was removed but an old shortcut still launches, uninstall the stale entry or reinstall Office from your Microsoft account or original installation media. Do not copy msgrfr32.dll into the Office folder from an unrelated source.

Use the application’s installer or modification tool to remove the French proofing feature. If the error comes from a stale shortcut or startup item, disable or remove that reference after confirming it belongs to the old software.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have removed or quarantined a legacy DLL. That does not prove the file was safe, because an old component can be damaged or replaced by malware.
In Windows Security:
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand detections related to the affected program or
msgrfr32.dll. - Inspect the original path, detection name, and action taken.
Restore or allow the file only when all of these are true:
- It came from the application’s original installation media or trusted installer.
- The path belongs to the expected application folder.
- The parent application is still installed and needed.
- A current security scan does not identify the installation as compromised.
If the file was found in a temporary folder, random download directory, or unexpected startup location, do not restore it. Reinstall the parent application from trusted media instead.
Fix 3: Do not download an isolated DLL
Random DLL download sites create several problems:
- The file may contain malware.
- It may be the wrong version.
- It may be the wrong architecture.
- It may have been modified or stripped of metadata.
- It may require other missing files.
- It may not match the application’s expected installation path.
- Multiple copies can create version conflicts.
A filename alone cannot establish that a DLL is safe. Even a file with a matching reported size or version may not be the correct build for your installation.
The safe sources are the original application’s installer, original installation media, a trusted recovery image, or the application’s official publisher. For Microsoft Office, use Microsoft’s supported repair and installation options. There is no current verified Lernout & Hauspie download source that should be substituted with an unverified archive.
Fix 4: Understand the error wording
Different messages point to different installation problems.
“msgrfr32.dll was not found” or “is missing”
The application could not locate the file in the directories it searched. The parent application or its French feature may never have been installed, or an update or cleanup process may have removed it.
Repair or reinstall the parent application.
“Error loading msgrfr32.dll”
Windows located the file but could not load it. The file may be damaged, incompatible, or dependent on another missing component.
Reinstall the complete application rather than replacing only the DLL.
“Entry point not found”
The application loaded a DLL that does not expose the function expected by the caller. This commonly indicates a mismatched version or a copy from another installation.
Recommended Free Tools
Remove the mismatched copy through the parent application’s repair process and reinstall the correct feature.
“Not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error”
The file may be corrupt, the wrong architecture, or incompatible with the program loading it. A 32-bit application generally needs the matching 32-bit build of its library, even on 64-bit Windows.
Do not attempt to solve this by registering the file or copying it into System32.
Fix 5: Account for 32-bit applications on 64-bit Windows
msgrfr32.dll is publicly identified as a 32-bit DLL. A 32-bit legacy application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it must load compatible 32-bit libraries.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Windows maintains separate 32-bit and 64-bit system locations and uses file-system redirection. The names System32 and SysWOW64 are confusing, but that is not a reason to manually place this file in either directory.
Windows normally searches the application directory before system locations. The correct copy may therefore belong inside the legacy program’s own folder. Installing several copies in different locations can cause Windows to load the wrong one and can increase DLL-preloading risk.
The correct repair is to reinstall the parent application and let its installer place the library where that application expects it.
Fix 6: Run DISM and SFC for broader Windows corruption
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They are not a dependable way to reinstall a third-party Linguistics DLL.

- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the parent application again.
Run DISM first, then SFC. If both complete successfully but the same application still reports msgrfr32.dll, return to the application’s installer. The DLL is not proven to be a protected Windows file.
Repeating SFC will not replace a missing third-party language engine.
When manually hunting through Windows repair commands becomes guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; the free scan identifies problems, while repair is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when that application owns msgrfr32.dll.
On Windows 11, Microsoft also provides Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now on supported systems. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings, but it should be reserved for broader Windows problems, not used as the first response to this application-specific DLL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Update or reinstall drivers only when the caller requires one
There is no authoritative evidence connecting msgrfr32.dll to a graphics driver, chipset driver, DirectX, or Visual C++ Redistributable. Do not install a runtime or driver merely because the DLL is missing.
If Event Viewer identifies a hardware utility or bundled application as the caller, update that specific software through its publisher. For a genuine device-related failure:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the affected device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when available. Otherwise download the correct driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official support page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesManually checking many device models and driver packages can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show the available updates; the free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. This does not replace reinstalling the parent application when that program is the actual owner of msgrfr32.dll.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change
If the error began directly after uninstalling software, running cleanup tools, or changing system settings, System Restore may undo that change.
- Press Windows key and search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Next and then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can affect applications, drivers, and system settings installed after the selected restore point. If no suitable restore point exists, reinstall the affected application instead.
Fix 9: Verify files for games and packaged applications
If a game or packaged application reports msgrfr32.dll, use its built-in launcher repair or file-verification command. The launcher should compare installed files and restore the complete application package.
Recommended Free Tools
If verification fails:
- Close the launcher.
- Restart Windows.
- Run verification again.
- Check the installer’s quarantine history.
- Reinstall the application if the error remains.
- Contact the application’s publisher with the exact error and application path.
Do not use a generic DLL download to repair a game installation.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer, typically for COM or ActiveX components.
A grammar engine loaded by an application is not established to be a self-registering COM component. Running:
regsvr32 msgrfr32.dll
will not restore a missing file, repair a damaged installation, provide a missing dependency, or convert a 32-bit library into a 64-bit one. It may simply report that the required registration entry point is missing.
Use regsvr32 only when the application’s official documentation specifically says that its component must be registered.
Final cleanup and prevention
After the error is fixed:
- Open the parent application and test the French proofing feature.
- Check Event Viewer for new application errors.
- Remove stale shortcuts and startup entries for software you no longer use.
- Keep only the required language features installed.
- Keep security software enabled.
- Avoid copying DLLs between computers.
- Keep a copy of the original installer or installation media for legacy software.
- Do not place application DLLs in
System32orSysWOW64unless the application’s official installer requires it.
FAQ
Is msgrfr32.dll part of Windows?
No reliable evidence identifies it as a Windows component. Public records associate it with the third-party Linguistics program and Lernout & Hauspie.
Is it definitely Microsoft Word’s file?
No. Older Word French grammar and proofing errors are the strongest documented association, but another legacy application can request the same filename. Identify the executable first.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?
Not merely because msgrfr32.dll is missing. No file-specific evidence establishes a required Visual C++ package. Reinstall the parent application so it can restore its own dependencies.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I copy it into System32 or SysWOW64?
No. The file is identified as 32-bit, and the correct location is normally determined by the application’s installer. Manual copying can create version conflicts.
Can SFC restore msgrfr32.dll?
Not reliably. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while this appears to be a third-party application component.
What if I do not use French proofing?
Remove or disable the French proofing or Linguistics feature through the parent application’s installer. If the message comes from removed software, clean up the stale shortcut or startup entry.
What is the safest fix?
Identify the calling program, then repair or reinstall its French proofing or Linguistics component from original media or an official installer. That restores the complete dependency rather than hiding one missing filename.
