mshwkorrime.dll is a Windows component associated with Microsoft Korean Handwriting Data and the Korean IME. When mshwkorrime.dll is missing, not found, or unable to load, repair Windows and its Korean language features instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing files, record three details:
- Which program shows the error: Windows startup, Korean input, an older application, or a game.
- When it appears: immediately at sign-in, when switching to Korean, when opening an IME feature, or only when launching one application.
- Which Windows architecture you use: open Settings → System → About and check System type.
The file is most strongly associated with older Windows Korean handwriting and IME resources, particularly Windows 7 and related Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 components. The exact location and installed version depend on the Windows release, architecture, language features, and servicing state.
Do not assume that a file with the same name from another Windows installation is compatible.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A failed or incomplete servicing operation can remove or leave inconsistent language resources. Start with Windows Update because it may restore the correct protected component without manual file handling.

- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart Windows, even if the update screen does not insist on it.
- Repeat the check until Windows reports that you are up to date.
Try the action that originally produced the error. If the message remains, continue with the repair commands below.
Fix 2: Run DISM, then System File Checker
Microsoft recommends repairing the Windows component store with DISM before running SFC. SFC uses that component store as a repair source.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- After DISM completes successfully, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft documents this DISM and SFC sequence in its system file repair instructions.
Success means that SFC reports no integrity violations, or that it found and repaired corrupted files. Test Korean input or the affected application after restarting.
Recommended Free Tools
If SFC says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, run DISM again, restart, and run SFC a second time. If DISM reports that source files could not be found, install pending updates first. Microsoft also documents using a matching Windows repair source with /Source and /LimitAccess; the source must match the installed Windows release and architecture.
Repeating SFC indefinitely is not useful when the component store itself is damaged. If the second pass still fails, save the results and move to the language-feature and recovery steps below.
When manually tracing component corruption means hunting through servicing logs and repeating DISM/SFC without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows DISM/SFC remain the supported first-line repair.
Fix 3: Reinstall Korean and its handwriting feature
If Korean input was removed, partially installed, or damaged during a Windows upgrade, reinstalling the language features can restore the associated IME resources.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOn Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Select Language & region.
- If Korean is not listed, select Add a language.
- Search for Korean, select it, and choose Next.
- In the optional language features list, select Handwriting if it is offered.
- Select Install.
- Restart Windows.
If Korean is already installed:
- Open Settings → Time & language → Language & region.
- Select the … menu beside Korean.
- Choose Language options.
- Review Optional language features.
- If Handwriting is available but not installed, select Download or Install.
- If the feature is present but the error began after a failed update, remove the Korean language pack, restart, then add Korean again.
- Run Windows Update after reinstalling the feature.
The available controls vary by Windows edition and release. Microsoft’s keyboard and handwriting instructions explain the supported language-feature workflow.

For managed computers, language handwriting resources may be deployed as Features on Demand packages. Package names and CAB identifiers vary by Windows release and servicing architecture, so do not install a package copied from an unrelated system.
Test by selecting the Korean keyboard from the taskbar input indicator. If the error appears only when opening handwriting input, the language feature is a stronger suspect than a general application runtime.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security Protection History
Antivirus quarantine is another possible reason for a missing Windows component. Do not restore the file solely because its name appears in an error message.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections involving
mshwkorrime.dll. - Note the original path and the detection reason.
- If the file came from
Downloads, a temporary folder, or an application directory, treat it as suspicious. - Run a Windows Security scan.
- Repair the component with DISM/SFC or reinstall Korean language features rather than restoring an unverified copy.
Microsoft explains this review process in its guidance for Protection History.
A legitimate Windows copy should have a Windows-system path appropriate to the installed release and should be covered by Microsoft’s digital signature. Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab when it is available. An unusual location, missing signature, or file that appeared independently of Windows servicing is a reason not to restore it.
Fix 5: Repair the affected application if only one program fails
If Windows starts normally, Korean input works, and only one old program reports the DLL error, the application may be requesting a Windows component incorrectly or may have its own damaged installation.
Try this order:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its … menu.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s local settings.
- Otherwise uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it using the developer’s official installer.
- Apply the application’s latest supported update.
Do not place mshwkorrime.dll in the application’s installation folder as a workaround. That can hide the underlying Windows problem and create a version or dependency conflict.
If the application is old, check whether it has a supported compatibility mode:

Click "Apply" and then "OK".
- Right-click the application shortcut or executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose the appropriate older Windows version.
- Select Apply, then OK.
Compatibility mode will not repair a missing Windows component, but it can help identify whether the failing program is the only caller.
Fix 6: Update input, touch, and tablet drivers
A touch display, pen, or tablet driver can affect handwriting input, but a driver update is not a substitute for restoring mshwkorrime.dll.
Check drivers through Windows first:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices.
- Look for entries such as HID-compliant touch screen or pen-related devices.
- Expand Keyboards and Mice and other pointing devices as well.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update:
- Right-click the device in Device Manager.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
- Restart and test again.
When identifying stale touch, pen, or keyboard drivers manually means guessing among many hardware entries, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show driver issues; its free scan identifies what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it will not replace the need to reinstall a damaged Windows language component.
Do not download or register the DLL manually
Avoid DLL download databases, “DLL fixer” utilities, and copies taken from another computer. A replacement can have:
- The wrong Windows release.
- The wrong architecture.
- Missing language resources.
- Incompatible dependencies.
- Incorrect servicing metadata.
- Malware or tampering.
There is no verified universal Microsoft standalone download for mshwkorrime.dll. The safe sources are Windows Update, the installed Windows component store, Microsoft installation media that matches the system, and Windows language-feature installation.
Do not copy the file blindly to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains many 32-bit system files. A 64-bit installation may contain both x86 and amd64 versions of a component, but the correct copy must come from the matching Windows servicing source.
Do not run regsvr32 on this file. mshwkorrime.dll is a Korean IME handwriting resource, not publicly documented as an independently registered COM or ActiveX server. Registering it will usually fail or accomplish nothing useful.
What “the specified module could not be found” means
That message does not always mean the named DLL is absent. Windows may find mshwkorrime.dll but fail to load one of its dependencies, or the file may be incompatible with the calling process.
Rank #4
Use the repair sequence rather than replacing the named file. If the error occurs only in one application, repair or reinstall that application. If it occurs during Windows input, startup, or language servicing, prioritize Windows Update, Korean feature installation, DISM, and SFC.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Advanced recovery when repair still fails
Review servicing logs
If DISM or SFC repeatedly fails, review the results before making manual changes. SFC records details in the CBS log, while DISM records servicing activity in its own log. These logs can show whether the failure concerns the component store, a language package, or a dependency.
Do not extract a DLL from the log and copy it manually. Use the log to choose the next supported repair method.
Use System Restore
System Restore is appropriate when the error began after a recent update, language change, driver installation, or system modification and a suitable restore point exists.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Review affected programs.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can remove applications and updates installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft’s System Restore guidance explains the implications.
Perform an in-place Windows repair
If the component store remains damaged and System Restore is unavailable, an in-place repair installation can rebuild Windows while preserving personal files and, when performed correctly, installed applications. Use Microsoft installation media that matches the installed Windows edition and architecture, start setup.exe from within Windows, and choose the option to keep personal files and apps.
Back up important data first and confirm the keep option before proceeding. This is a broader repair than reinstalling Korean and should be reserved for persistent Windows corruption.
