What nvapi64.dll is
NVAPI is NVIDIA’s Windows programming interface. Games, graphics applications, emulators, launchers, overlays, and other GPU-dependent software can use it to communicate with NVIDIA driver features.
The file normally belongs to the NVIDIA display-driver package and is usually installed here on 64-bit Windows:
C:WindowsSystem32nvapi64.dll
The name can be confusing. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system components. The 32-bit NVIDIA library is normally named nvapi.dll and is associated with the 32-bit system directory, SysWOW64.

Do not substitute nvapi.dll for nvapi64.dll. A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application may require different NVAPI libraries.
Version identification
The file changes when NVIDIA releases driver updates. Historical copies may have different versions and sizes, so the values below are identification clues rather than current requirements.
| Architecture | Reported version | Reported size |
|---|---|---|
| 64-bit | 26.21.14.3160 | 4.85 MB |
| 64-bit | 24.21.13.9836 | 4.63 MB |
| 64-bit | 21.21.13.7849 | 3.89 MB |
To inspect the copy on your computer:
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
C:WindowsSystem32in the address bar. - Find
nvapi64.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open Details to see file information.
- Open Digital Signatures and inspect the signer.
A genuine driver file should have a valid NVIDIA digital signature. A file with no signature, an invalid signature, or an unexpected location deserves further investigation.
What the error message means
You may see one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because nvapi64.dll is missing from your computer.” The file is absent, deleted, or inaccessible.
- “The code execution cannot proceed because nvapi64.dll was not found.” The application could not locate the required 64-bit library.
- “Error loading nvapi64.dll. The specified module could not be found.” The DLL may be missing, damaged, blocked, or dependent on a broken driver installation.
- “nvapi64.dll was either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.” This is commonly associated with a corrupted or incompatible copy, including Windows error
0xc000012f. - “Untrusted system file C:WindowsSystem32nvapi64.dll.” An anti-cheat system may be rejecting a modified, mismatched, unsigned, or unexpected driver file.
The exact wording helps identify the branch to follow, but a clean NVIDIA driver installation is the correct first repair for most variants.
Fix 1: Reinstall the NVIDIA driver cleanly
This is the most likely solution because the NVIDIA display driver owns nvapi64.dll.
Before starting, note the affected program. Is the error from a game, launcher, video editor, emulator, mod, overlay, or anti-cheat service? Also consider whether it began after a driver update, game update, antivirus action, disk cleanup, or system-image restoration.
Download the correct package
- Open NVIDIA’s official driver-download page in your browser.
- Select the exact product series and model of your NVIDIA GPU.
- Select your Windows edition and download the current supported display-driver installer.
- Do not download an individual
nvapi64.dllfile.
If you do not know the GPU model:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Record the NVIDIA adapter name.
- If the adapter has a warning icon, right-click it and select Properties to inspect the device status.
Perform the clean installation
- Close the affected game or application.
- Run the NVIDIA driver installer.
- Accept the license terms.
- Choose Custom (Advanced) rather than the default installation.
- Select Perform a clean installation.
- Continue through setup.
- Restart Windows when installation finishes.
- Launch the affected program again.
A clean installation removes previous NVIDIA driver files and resets NVIDIA settings. It does not guarantee a fix if the GPU, storage drive, Windows installation, game files, or anti-cheat software has another problem.

If manually hunting for the correct driver version is difficult, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies the issue, while the full version performs the driver installation. Use the official NVIDIA package when you need to repair this specific driver, and remember that reinstalling the affected game remains the definitive fix when its own files are damaged.
Fix 2: Verify the affected game’s files
If only one Steam game fails while other NVIDIA applications work, the game installation, a mod, or an injected overlay may be responsible.
- Restart Steam.
- Open Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to replace damaged or missing files.
- Restart the game.
Remove or temporarily disable graphics mods, ReShade-style injectors, unofficial DLL proxies, overlays, and launch parameters that modify the game’s startup process. If verification reports a problem, launch the game before reinstalling it. If it still fails, update the game and its launcher.
For a non-Steam game, use the launcher’s Repair, Scan, or Verify command if available. If the problem began immediately after installing a mod, remove that mod before testing the driver again.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Microsoft Defender or another antivirus product may have quarantined the file. Do not assume that every quarantine is a false positive.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving
nvapi64.dll. - Check the reported path, detection name, and action taken.
- If the file is in the expected NVIDIA driver location, verify its digital signature and driver provenance.
- Do not restore it blindly.
- If it is confirmed genuine, use the security product’s restore or allow action.
- Reinstall the NVIDIA driver afterward so the file comes from a known-good package.
- Run a full system scan.
If Defender repeatedly quarantines the file, treat the situation as a security problem. Do not create an exclusion merely to suppress the warning. Run a full scan or Microsoft Defender Offline scan and investigate files outside the normal Windows and NVIDIA driver paths.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when the file exists but reports Bad Image, when several unrelated programs have missing-system-file errors, or when Windows itself appears corrupted. They do not replace the NVIDIA driver installation.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears paused.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command should be used as a substitute for reinstalling an NVIDIA driver-owned file.

If repeated manual DISM and SFC runs leave you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems; its free scan reports findings, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and a driver reinstall remains the appropriate repair when the fault is specifically inside the NVIDIA package.

A 64-bit application normally uses the 64-bit NVIDIA component. A 32-bit application may use the 32-bit nvapi.dll library instead.
To identify whether Windows is 64-bit:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into System32, copy a 64-bit DLL into SysWOW64, or rename one file to impersonate the other. This can cause crashes and failed signature or anti-cheat checks.
If an older game or GPU stopped working after a recent driver update, install the latest driver supported by that GPU. If the application requires an older compatible driver, use NVIDIA’s official driver archive rather than an unverified DLL. Do not rename nvapi64.dll as a permanent workaround.
Fix 6: Handle an anti-cheat “Untrusted system file” warning
An anti-cheat service may reject nvapi64.dll even when the file name looks correct. This can happen after a driver update, a modified game installation, an overlay, an injected DLL, or a signature mismatch.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Remove unofficial DLL replacements and graphics injectors.
- Disable third-party overlays temporarily.
- Verify the game’s files.
- Update the game and its anti-cheat component.
- Reinstall the NVIDIA driver using Custom (Advanced) and Perform a clean installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Check the file’s digital signature again.
- Launch the game without mods.
If the file is genuinely signed by NVIDIA and the warning continues, contact the game publisher’s support. Do not bypass the warning by renaming or manually replacing the file.
What not to do
Do not download nvapi64.dll from a random site
An isolated DLL may contain malware, belong to the wrong driver version, use the wrong architecture, or fail because the surrounding NVIDIA driver files are also damaged. It can also trigger anti-cheat or signature validation.
The safe sources are the official NVIDIA display-driver installer, a validated system backup, or an administrator-led recovery from a known-good official driver package.

Do not use regsvr32 routinely
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. nvapi64.dll is a driver API runtime, not a conventional self-registering ActiveX or COM library. Running this command normally will not repair it and may only produce another error.
Do not reinstall Visual C++ or DirectX as the first fix
Visual C++ packages may repair errors involving files such as vcruntime140.dll or msvcp*.dll. DirectX packages may address legacy files such as d3dx*.dll. They do not normally reinstall nvapi64.dll.
Do not enable random Windows Features
Optional Windows Features are not the normal source of this NVIDIA driver component. Turning features on or off will not repair a damaged NVIDIA installation.

Recommended Free Tools
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?
Usually not. Visual C++ repairs a different group of runtime dependencies. Repair the NVIDIA display driver first.
What if the file exists but says “Bad Image”?
Repeat the NVIDIA clean installation, then run DISM followed by SFC. Also check the digital signature and investigate antivirus actions or third-party modifications.
What if only one application reports the error?
Verify that application’s files, remove mods and injectors, and update its launcher. The NVIDIA driver may be healthy if other GPU-dependent programs work normally.
Can I use System Restore?
Yes, when the problem clearly follows a recent driver or software change and a suitable restore point exists. Use it as a rollback option, not as a replacement for identifying the damaged driver or application.
