MSI’s Claw 8 AI+ is no longer just a tease. Previewed at Computex 2024 as an 8-inch Windows 11 handheld powered by Intel’s Lunar Lake platform, it became the retail Claw 8 AI+ A2VM in December 2024. Its most important upgrades over the original Claw are practical: a larger 120Hz VRR display, Core Ultra 7 258V processor, Arc 140V integrated graphics, 32GB of memory, an 80Wh battery, dual Thunderbolt 4 ports, and redesigned controls.
This is the Lunar Lake model. MSI’s newer Claw 8 EX AI+, introduced in 2026, is a separate and more powerful device based on Intel Arc G3 Extreme graphics.

The biggest upgrade: Lunar Lake hardware
The retail Claw 8 AI+ uses Intel’s Core Ultra 7 258V, paired with integrated Intel Arc 140V graphics and 32GB of fast LPDDR5x-8533 memory. This is a major platform change from the original Claw’s Intel hardware.
Lunar Lake’s importance is primarily about integrated-graphics capability and efficiency at handheld power limits. A handheld cannot simply run its processor at laptop-level power indefinitely; performance-per-watt, thermals, drivers, and game-specific optimization all matter. The Claw 8 AI+ is designed to deliver more usable performance within those constraints than the first model.
The platform also includes an NPU for AI workloads. However, the “AI+” name should not be treated as a promise of automatically faster gaming. For most buyers, the Arc GPU, driver maturity, memory configuration, power tuning, and compatibility will matter much more than the NPU.
MSI has promoted performance advantages for its 17W Claw models, including claims of up to 113% higher peak FPS and 20% higher average FPS in particular comparisons. Those figures are MSI’s own test claims under stated conditions, not universal benchmarks for every game or power mode.
An 8-inch 16:10 display
The original Claw used a 7-inch-class screen. The Claw 8 AI+ expands that to an 8-inch, 1920×1200 panel with a 16:10 aspect ratio, 120Hz refresh rate, touchscreen support, variable refresh rate, 100% sRGB coverage, and 500-nit typical brightness.
The extra vertical space is useful beyond gaming. Windows menus, launchers, web pages, and desktop applications fit more naturally on a 16:10 screen than on a conventional 16:9 panel. Games also appear larger, while the 1920×1200 resolution gives users room to reduce rendering resolution or use upscaling when a demanding title cannot run comfortably at native resolution.

- Intel Core Ultra 7 258V – AI-Powered Efficiency: Next-gen Series 2 processor delivers 50% better GPU performance and 40% higher efficiency. 47 NPU TOPS accelerate local AI tasks – from Copilot+ to real-time game optimization.
- 8" 120Hz VRR Touch Display: FHD+ IPS screen with 500 nits sunlight readability. 16:10 golden ratio and VRR support eliminate tearing. Perfect for AAA gaming, streaming, or productivity on the go.
- 80Whr Battery + Fast Charge: Massive 80Whr capacity beats most handhelds. Fast charge gets you back in action quickly. Game longer, worry less – whether on a flight or a long commute.
- Revolutionary Intraflow Cooling: Redesigned airflow keeps internal components cool, preventing thermal throttling. Hall Effect analog sticks and triggers offer drift-free, microscopic precision – built to last.
- Unlimited Expansion: Connect external GPU for desktop-class graphics, dual 4K displays, or high-speed storage. Wi-Fi 7 delivers 5.8 Gbps and 2ms latency – lag-free cloud gaming and downloads.
VRR can make fluctuating frame rates look smoother by matching the display’s refresh behavior more closely to the GPU’s output. That does not turn every game into a 120-frame-per-second experience, though. Modern AAA games may still require reduced settings, upscaling, frame-rate caps, or a lower refresh target.
The trade-off is physical. A larger screen contributes to a larger chassis and higher weight, and driving a larger, brighter, high-refresh panel can affect power consumption. MSI has increased the battery capacity substantially, but the display alone does not establish a particular runtime.
The 80Wh battery is a meaningful capacity upgrade
MSI equips the Claw 8 AI+ with a six-cell 80Wh battery and includes a 65W USB-C PD 3.0 adapter. The capacity is one of the clearest hardware improvements over the original Claw family.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMore watt-hours provide more energy for a gaming session, but capacity is not the same as tested battery life. Actual runtime changes with the game, brightness, refresh rate, TDP or performance mode, frame-rate cap, Wi-Fi activity, Windows background processes, thermals, and whether the player uses upscaling or frame generation.
MSI has also discussed 17W operation as an efficiency-focused mode. That may be useful for less demanding games or longer sessions, but it should not be converted into a universal hours-of-play claim without matched independent testing.
Two Thunderbolt 4 ports fix a practical limitation
The original Claw’s single high-speed USB-C connection could create awkward choices when the handheld was charging and the player also wanted a display, storage, or another accessory. The Claw 8 AI+ provides two Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports, each with DisplayPort functionality and USB Power Delivery support.
That arrangement makes it possible to connect a peripheral such as an external SSD or display through one port while charging through the other. A dock may still be the cleaner solution for a desk setup, especially if you need Ethernet, multiple displays, keyboard and mouse support, or several USB devices.

Thunderbolt 4 does not mean every USB-C accessory will operate at Thunderbolt speeds. Performance depends on the accessory, cable, dock, display, and operating system. External GPU behavior also depends on the enclosure, drivers, game, and Windows configuration.

For charging, the included 65W adapter is the reference point. Low-wattage phone chargers, unsuitable cables, or docks that reserve too little power can trigger slower charging or reduced-performance behavior. A reputable 65W-or-higher USB-C PD charger is the sensible choice when replacing the bundled adapter.
Redesigned bumpers, D-pad, and Hall-effect controls
MSI says it used community feedback to revise the physical controls. The LB and RB bumpers changed from side-actuated mechanisms to top-actuated designs, while the D-pad became deeper and concave with an Xbox-controller-inspired shape.
MSI’s product documentation also lists Hall-effect analog sticks and triggers. These use magnetic sensing rather than conventional contact-based components, which can reduce the kind of mechanical wear associated with traditional potentiometer controls. They do not make every form of controller failure impossible, but they are a valuable feature for a device intended for extended use.

The redesigned controls and updated shell are objective changes. Whether the handheld feels more comfortable is subjective and can depend on hand size, grip, game type, and session length. At approximately 795g, the Claw 8 AI+ is not a lightweight handheld, even if its larger battery and display make that weight easier to justify for some users.
Storage, connectivity, and expansion
The Claw 8 AI+ is listed with up to a 1TB PCIe Gen 4 SSD and an accessible storage slot. “Up to 1TB” describes the configured drive, not the free space remaining after Windows, recovery data, and installed applications.
Storage expansion remains possible, but replacing the SSD requires a compatible drive and installation work. A microSD card can also add capacity, although readers should not assume that every game will load or stream assets identically from removable storage. Large, frequently played games are generally better candidates for the internal SSD.
Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 provide modern wireless connectivity, subject to the capabilities of the network and paired devices. The dual USB-C ports also support external displays through DisplayPort.
Windows 11 and MSI Center M
Windows 11 gives the Claw 8 AI+ access to Steam, Xbox PC Game Pass, Epic Games Store, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, and other PC launchers. That breadth is a major advantage for players with existing PC libraries, but Windows is less console-like than SteamOS or a dedicated console interface. Launcher updates, Windows notifications, desktop controls, driver maintenance, and anti-cheat compatibility can all add friction.

The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Who should consider the Claw 8 AI+?
- Large-screen buyers: The 8-inch 16:10 panel is more comfortable for games, text, and Windows use than a smaller display.
- Long-session players: The 80Wh battery offers substantially more capacity, though real runtime depends on settings and workload.
- Windows-library owners: Windows supports a wide range of launchers and PC storefronts, with the usual desktop-management caveats.
- Original Claw owners: The larger display, improved platform, extra memory, bigger battery, second USB-C port, and revised controls represent a meaningful refresh.
- Desk users: Dual Thunderbolt 4 ports are useful for charging alongside displays, storage, or other peripherals.
It is less suitable for buyers who prioritize the lightest possible handheld, want a console-like interface with minimal maintenance, or expect demanding AAA games to run at 120 frames per second without compromises. The integrated memory is not user-upgradable, and Intel handheld performance remains sensitive to graphics-driver maturity and game-specific optimization.
Claw 8 AI+ versus the newer Claw 8 EX AI+
MSI’s 2026 Claw 8 EX AI+ should not be treated as a revised specification of the Lunar Lake model. It is a separate, later-generation handheld using Intel Arc G3 Extreme graphics and supporting newer features such as XeSS 3 and Multi-Frame Generation.
The EX AI+ is the more relevant choice for buyers who want MSI’s newest Intel handheld hardware and are willing to pay for it. Its reported U.S. listing was $1,799, but that is a current reported listing rather than a permanent price guarantee; buyers should verify the live MSI store page and exact SKU.
The Lunar Lake Claw 8 AI+ makes more sense when it is materially cheaper and the buyer values its 8-inch display, 80Wh battery, 32GB memory, and dual Thunderbolt 4 ports. If neither device offers the desired value, weight, or interface, skipping both may be the better decision.
Verdict
The original Computex announcement understated how substantial the finished Claw 8 AI+ would be. The retail A2VM is not merely the first Claw with a bigger screen: it combines Lunar Lake efficiency and Arc graphics with 32GB of memory, an unusually large 80Wh battery, dual Thunderbolt 4 ports, revised controls, and more capable handheld software.
Its weaknesses are equally clear. It is heavy, Windows still requires maintenance, battery capacity does not guarantee a specific runtime, and the 120Hz panel cannot make demanding games run at 120 FPS by itself. For buyers who want a large Windows handheld and can find the Lunar Lake model at the right price, it is a meaningful upgrade over the original Claw. It should simply be judged as a released product—not as the 2024 tease its original headline described.
