MSI Claw 8 AI+ vs. Legion Go Gen 2: Which Handheld Is Better?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most buyers choosing between the current flagship models, the Lenovo Legion Go Gen 2 is the better all-rounder; the MSI Claw 8 AI+ is the better fit if you prioritize battery capacity, lower weight, or a lower price. This comparison is specifically between the MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM and Lenovo Legion Go Gen 2—not the original 2024 Claw and 2023 Legion Go. Their screen and control designs are easier to compare than their raw gaming performance, which varies by game, power setting, drivers, and configuration.

Which MSI Claw and Legion Go models are being compared?

“MSI Claw” and “Legion Go” each refer to multiple handhelds. The current comparison here is the Claw 8 AI+ A2VM with Core Ultra 7 258V and the Legion Go Gen 2. The Claw 8 EX AI+ is a separate 2026 model with Intel Arc G3 Extreme; its performance should not be attributed to the Claw 8 AI+.

Family and model What distinguishes it How it fits this comparison
MSI Claw A1M Original Claw generation, based on Intel Core Ultra Series 1 hardware. Older device; not the Claw tested against Legion Go Gen 2 here.
MSI Claw 7 AI+ A2VM 7-inch model with Core Ultra Series 2 and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. MSI’s specifications describe its display and ports. A smaller alternative, not the 8-inch comparison model.
MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM 8-inch 1920×1200 display, 80Wh battery, and Core Ultra 7 258V in the cited configuration. The MSI model compared throughout this article.
MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ A distinct 2026 model with Intel Arc G3 Extreme. Launch coverage distinguishes it from the Claw 8 AI+. Consider separately; its hardware changes the comparison.
Original Lenovo Legion Go Earlier Ryzen Z1 Extreme generation with an 8.8-inch LCD and detachable controllers. Not the OLED-equipped Gen 2 evaluated here.
Lenovo Legion Go Gen 2 8.8-inch OLED, detachable controllers, kickstand, and a 74Wh battery; configurations include a Ryzen Z2 Extreme option. The Lenovo model compared throughout this article.

These configurations are a useful reference, not a guarantee that every regional SKU has the same processor, memory, storage, wireless standard, or price. Check the full model number and local listing before buying.

Which handheld performs better in games?

There is no evidence here for a universal FPS winner. Performance depends on the game, graphics API, driver version, resolution, power limit, and whether an upscaler or frame generation is enabled. A result at 30–35W also may not describe how either handheld performs or sounds in a portable 15–20W profile.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The Legion Go Gen 2’s top configuration pairs AMD’s Ryzen Z2 Extreme with Radeon 890M graphics. The cited Claw 8 AI+ configuration pairs Intel Core Ultra 7 258V with Arc 140V graphics and 32GB LPDDR5x memory. Those specifications identify the hardware, but do not establish which one wins in a particular game. Intel Arc and AMD Radeon results can change with driver updates, so benchmark claims need a game, configuration, driver date, and test method attached.

What a useful performance comparison should measure

  • Test both devices at matching 15W, 20W and 25W power limits, plus higher profiles only where both support them.
  • Use the same game build, Windows version, driver date, resolution, graphics settings, and upscaling mode. Label native rendering, XeSS or FSR upscaling, and frame generation separately.
  • Report average FPS alongside 1% lows and frame-time consistency. Higher average FPS does not necessarily mean steadier or more responsive play.
  • Record temperatures, fan noise and battery drain. These affect whether a performance advantage is useful in handheld play.

For demanding games, neither device should be assumed to sustain native 1920×1200 at high settings. Lowering rendering resolution to 800p or 900p and using a suitable upscaler can be more practical; a 30, 40, 45 or 60fps target may also make more sense than chasing the screen’s maximum refresh rate. VRR can smooth changes within its working range, but it cannot correct poor frame pacing, shader-compilation stutter, or frame-generation artifacts.

Which screen is better for gaming?

The Legion Go Gen 2 has the clear display advantage if image quality is your priority. Its larger 8.8-inch OLED can produce deep blacks and stronger contrast than the Claw’s IPS-level screen, and Lenovo lists DCI-P3 color and True Black 1000 certification. That can make dark scenes and HDR-compatible content more striking, including at frame rates below 144Hz.

The Claw 8 AI+ uses an 8-inch 1920×1200 IPS-level touchscreen with a 120Hz ceiling and a specified 48–120Hz VRR range. Its panel is rated at 500 nits typical brightness and 100% sRGB typical coverage. The Legion’s maximum is 144Hz, with a reported 30–144Hz VRR range; the extra refresh headroom is useful only when the game and hardware can deliver frames at the corresponding rate. MSI’s wider cited VRR floor may be useful at lower frame rates, but VRR range alone does not determine smoothness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Both screens are specified at 500 nits, but that figure does not guarantee identical visibility in a bright room. OLED also is not automatically more power-efficient: display consumption depends on brightness, image content and refresh rate, as well as the rest of the system. Static Windows elements may prompt burn-in concerns over long-term use, but the available evidence here does not establish an outcome for either device. If you are sensitive to flicker or PWM, seek measurements for the exact panel rather than assuming either screen is comfortable for you. Many 16:9 games will not fill a 16:10 1920×1200 screen without stretching or cropping; preserving the original aspect ratio can mean black bars.

Which has better battery life?

The Claw 8 AI+ has the larger battery on paper: 80Wh versus Lenovo’s 74Wh. Independent coverage has described the Claw as strong on battery life, but battery capacity is not a runtime result, and no directly comparable controlled runtime figures are established here. The Claw is the more promising choice if unplugged play is a priority, not a guarantee of longer sessions in every game.

Actual gaming time changes with the power profile, screen brightness and refresh rate, Wi-Fi, audio, game settings, and workload. Video playback, idle drain and standby behavior are different use cases from AAA gaming. For a trustworthy runtime comparison, look for tests that state those conditions and separately measure charging from 0–50% and 0–100%; neither a larger battery nor a rapid-charge feature establishes those times. Lenovo lists Super Rapid Charge for the Legion Go Gen 2, but the cited product information does not provide a comparable charge-time result.

Which is more comfortable and portable?

The Claw is roughly 125g lighter than the Legion Go Gen 2 in the cited figures, which makes it the more straightforward pick for holding during a commute or a long session. The Legion’s detachable controllers and kickstand can shift the experience: its extra weight matters less when the device is propped on a table or connected to a TV, and the controllers can be used apart from the screen.

Total weight does not settle comfort. Grip shape, weight distribution, hand size, trigger reach, joystick placement, fan noise near the hands, and session length all matter. Try the exact device if possible, especially if you are sensitive to handhelds approaching 800–900g. The Legion is thicker and heavier as a handheld, while the Claw’s integrated controls make its setup simpler but do not provide the same tabletop or detached-controller flexibility.

Which has better controls and expansion options?

Legion Go Gen 2: adaptable play styles

Lenovo lists detachable controllers, a built-in kickstand, an included controller base, Hall Effect joysticks, a touchpad, assignable buttons and an FPS mode that uses the right controller as a mouse. This makes the Legion better suited to tabletop sessions and certain mouse-driven games than a conventional fixed-control handheld. Lenovo lists two USB4 ports for peripherals and external displays. USB4 capability should not be assumed to provide identical external-GPU compatibility to every Thunderbolt setup.

Claw 8 AI+: integrated controls and Thunderbolt 4

The Claw keeps its controls attached, which avoids detaching and reconfiguring parts when moving between handheld use and a desk. MSI’s Claw AI+ materials identify two Thunderbolt 4 ports, an appealing option for users considering an eGPU or external display, though enclosure and driver compatibility still matter. Control components can vary by exact SKU, so verify stick and trigger specifications on the regional product listing rather than applying one Claw model’s details to another.

MSI describes its control and quick-setting software through MSI Center M. Lenovo’s Legion Space is for Windows models. Both are Windows PCs, so vendor overlays do not remove the desktop, launcher, update and pop-up friction that can arise when switching among Steam, Xbox, Epic, GOG and other services. Controller navigation can vary by launcher and game; check how well your own library works before choosing either as a console replacement.

How do price and value compare?

At the cited US price points, Lenovo listed the Legion Go Gen 2 from $1,099.99, while Windows Central listed $899.99 for the reviewed Claw 8 AI+ configuration. These are not necessarily equivalent configurations, and prices can change with retailer promotions, region and stock. Check current listings for the exact RAM and storage combination rather than treating either figure as a permanent price.

The Legion’s higher listed starting price buys a distinctive OLED panel, detachable controls, a kickstand and controller base. Whether those features justify the difference depends on how often you will use them. The Claw’s lower cited price, 32GB review configuration, lighter body and larger battery make it more compelling when it is substantially cheaper and its fixed-control design suits you. Do not infer a precise price-per-GB or price-per-Wh advantage from these figures: the cited prices are not confirmed as equivalent configurations or live offers.

Factor in only add-ons you will use. A dock makes sense for TV or monitor play with peripherals; a microSD card expands capacity without opening the device, but should not be expected to match SSD load times in demanding games. Lenovo notes that its controller charging connector is sold separately. A charger or power bank can help extend travel sessions, but adds weight. The Legion product page also lists a carry case in its package; confirm the contents of the SKU you are purchasing.

Which one should you buy?

  • Choose the Legion Go Gen 2 for the best screen and flexibility: its OLED display, detachable controllers, kickstand and FPS mode are the stronger package if you play tabletop, connect to a TV, or value visual contrast most.
  • Choose the Claw 8 AI+ for lower weight and battery capacity: it is the more appealing fit if you carry the device in your hands, want an 80Wh battery, or find it meaningfully cheaper.
  • For performance-per-watt, compare the games you actually play: neither the hardware specifications nor one high-power benchmark establishes a universal winner. Look for tests at matched power limits and current drivers.
  • For eGPU use, favor the Claw’s Thunderbolt 4 connection only after checking compatibility: the Legion’s USB4 ports may also support external graphics, but should not be assumed equivalent across every enclosure and setup.
  • For a first handheld, decide whether Windows flexibility is worth its setup friction: both run Windows rather than a dedicated console operating system. If you want a Steam-focused interface and your library is compatible, the Steam Deck OLED is a different kind of alternative, not a direct Windows-hardware substitute.

Consider a Claw 7 AI+ or original Legion Go only if its smaller screen or older generation is acceptable and the discount is substantial. The Claw 8 EX AI+ is a separate newer platform, not a shortcut to conclusions about the Claw 8 AI+. For a default recommendation between the two models covered here, choose the Legion Go Gen 2 if its screen and controller flexibility matter enough to justify the premium; choose the Claw 8 AI+ if lighter weight, battery capacity and price matter more.
